FUNCTIONS OF ART - In music, dance, or theater, the task of the

performer is to approximate the intent of the

ART AS EXPERIENCE
- Art is man made
- Creating art is one activity of man that distinguishes
him from animals  can be an individual activity or a
collective one
- Art to the abstract expressionists is not so much the
finished product as the process involved in creating
it
- ‘art is a chance result’ (Hauser, A.)
ART AS RE-CREATION
- We can interpret art as recreation in three ways:
a. The artist’s re-creation of reality
b. The performer’s re-creation of the artist’s work
c. The percipient’s re-creation of the artist’s idea
- There are two main concepts of reality governing
recreation in Western art  one stems from Plato, &
Aristotle
o Plato = plato and his followers believe that the
world of appearances, the physical universe, is
merely a distorted reflection of Universal and
absolute ideas
- Everything arises from pre-established, pre-
conceived ideas.
- Everything is conceived in terms of its essential
or original principle
o Aristotle = believed in the world of concrete
realities, in the reality of sensory appearances.
- Reality is located in individual things empirically
observed

c. The percipient’s recreation of the artist’s ideas
- Perception is selective  What the percipient or
receptor sees is determined by his personality &
social background
- Socio-historical approach is necessary to aesthetic
enjoyment because the aesthetic experience is not
merely the enjoyment of form per se but the
enjoyment of form embodying the artist’s ideas &
feelings
ART AS EXPRESSION
- The great majority of artistic activities & art
creations are expressions not of the individual but of
society
- The more insistent the artist is in expressing his self
or his soul, the more abstract his work becomes
- Examples:

b. Fernando Amorsolo
c. Jackson Pollock (pg. 12)

a. The artist’s re-creation of reality

- The kind of reality that the artist wants to re-create
determines the manner of representing the subject
- If the artist’s intention is to show objective reality,
that is, reality which can be perceived by the senses,
his manner of representing it will be naturalistic in
opposition to the stylized
- When the artist’s intention is to project an emotion
or to convey a conceptual reality, he usually resorts
to distortion

b. The performer’s re-creation of the artist’s work

- It is where the percipient experiences the work of
the creative artist not directly, but through a
mediator – the performing artist

naturalistic. Meaning what he sees, hears, feels or even
smell or tastes, he will try to approximate it as closely as
possible in creating his piece. For example, David by
Michaelangelo. Here he captured the visual appearance
of a young man, complete with the veins on hands and
neck, the bulge of muscles on the arms, and even the
knuckles and nails of the fingers. So, it looks so lifelike!
