PRUshield
Your relationships
are precious.
Protect them.
Why do you need
medical insurance?
One cannot predict when sickness or injury happens. A loss of health can
mean a loss of earnings if you are unable to work, and it can also lead to
ongoing medical bills that may drain your financial resources.
2
How expensive
can medical bills get?
When the unexpected happens, there is no doubt that you should be
focusing on your recovery instead of worrying about your medical bills.
But with escalating healthcare costs, seeking treatment can cause a
financial strain.
In 2015, the gross medical inflation rate in Singapore was 15%, which is
about 7% higher than the global rate*. Furthermore, Singapore has an
average life expectancy that ranked third in the world at 83.1 years**.
A longer life span may mean additional strain to medical cost one may need
to bear.
How much your treatment will cost also depends on the type of medical
condition you have, whether you seek treatment at a public or private
hospital, the type of hospital ward you choose and the length of hospital
stay you require. Here are two examples of the total hospital inpatient bill
that one could incur for lung and breast cancer †.

How you can stay on top
of rising healthcare costs
With rising healthcare costs, you can be better prepared for costly medical bills by enhancing your
coverage with an Integrated Shield Plan.
PRUshield, a Medisave-approved plan1, is a private health insurance plan that provides the additional
coverage you need to complement the existing benefits you already enjoy with MediShield Life.
It gives you more options to choose the coverage that suits your budget and healthcare needs. This
includes the flexibility of choosing between private and public hospitals, ward classes and doctors.

What’s in it for me?
5
Which plan is right
for me?
Flexibility of choice is important in getting the right medical coverage you need. The option of
supplementary plans in addition to your main PRUshield plan means more ways and options to help
you cope with rising medical costs, and adequately protect you and your loved ones.

Here’s an example of how
PRUshield protects you
Mr Tan is a 30-year-old Singaporean who was having trouble with his gallbladder.
After a visit to the doctor and a number of follow-up tests and scans, including an
abdominal ultrasound, Mr Tan was diagnosed with gallstones.
Following his doctor’s recommendation, Mr Tan underwent gallbladder removal
surgery and was hospitalised for 5 days.
Take a look at how the various PRUshield plans made a difference in the amount
Mr Tan had to pay.
8 The above illustration is based on an estimated calculation of MediShield Life payout. The figures are for illustrative purposes only.
PRUshield
protects foreigners, too
As a foreigner, it can be even more challenging for you to enjoy comprehensive
coverage in your home away from home. With the added burden of relocating
overseas, and having no MediShield Life or adequate healthcare insurance
from your employers in Singapore, medical costs can be significant for you
and your family.
PRUshield ensures that you are well-protected, no matter what. Take Mr Smith
for example. The 30-year-old Australian has been staying in Singapore for
two years. Only recently, he had some trouble with his gallbladder. A visit to
the doctor and some tests confirmed he needed gallbladder removal surgery
and hospitalisation for 5 days.
Here is how the various PRUshield plans made a difference in the amount
Mr Smith had to pay.
9
How you can keep your
premiums affordable
Rising medical costs and claims have resulted in the increase of Integrated Shield Plan premiums in
recent years. But you can manage the cost of your premiums by considering the option of filing your
medical claims under your company’s group insurance employee benefit plan first, or under other
individual plans you may have.
By using your PRUshield policy only as the last option, you reduce the claims made against it and
leave your policy benefit limit unaffected. This way, your personal premiums can be kept more
affordable in the long term.
