The Objective of Training Course

This training course is designed primarily for Pipeline Inspectors, with the main emphasis
on a more basic understanding of pipeline design aspects and relating design issues to the
more practical aspects of pipeline fabrication and installation. This is a general course to
provide the Pipeline Inspector with an overall view of the requirements of the DNV
Standard OS F101 and this training supplements other more specific professional
qualifications such as welding inspection, coating inspection and NDT normally required
of Pipeline Inspectors.
Det Norske Veritas
At the end of training course, each participant will have an understanding of:
1. General understanding of the DNV Submarine Pipeline Rules and safety
philosophies
2. Submarine Pipeline design considerations presents
3. Conventional Pipeline Installation procedures and their analysis
4. Quality Surveillance during pipelaying operations
5. Non-destructive testing methods used onboard pipelay vessels FUNDAMENTALS of SUBMARINE
6. Welding technology and welding systems for pipelaying
7. Linepipe fabrication and pipe-coating operations.
PIPELINE DESIGN, FABRICATION &
Instructors
1. Mr. Paul Heldal is Principal Engineer in DNV’s Head Office in Stavanger, Norway. He has
INSTALLATION
more than 25 years experience as Verification Team Leader for fabrication and deliveries of
linepipe at major pipemills worldwide and Project Manager for verification during large offshore
pipelaying contracts in the North Sea and in S E Asia. based on DNV OS-F101 Standard
2. Olav Aamlid is Principal Engineer in DNV Section for Pipelines in Norway. He has a PhD
from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 1993. He started his career in
DNV in the R&D department from 1993 to 1997, dealing mainly with finite element analysis.
A Course for Pipeline Surveyors/Inspectors
From here, he moved on to the pipeline department and has since been focusing on finite
element analyses of pipelines and assessment of strength, stability, fatigue, failure (41/2-Day Course Approved by MIGAS)
investigations, fitness for purpose investigations, including laboratory testing.
3. Mr Edwardus Ng is Director of Operations for Verification and Certification services in DNV 17th Feb – 21st Feb 2003
Asia Pacific. He has a design background within the field of pipelines and more than 20 years
experience in the offshore industry. He has taught pipeline topics in a number of seminars and
workshops and has co-authored 7 papers on design, condition assessment of pipelines.

Brief Description of DNV

Det Norske Veritas (DNV), established in 1864, is an independent, autonomous foundation to
Hotel Seruni, Bogor
safeguard life, property and the environment. The DNV group employs more than 5500 staff and
located in more than 126 countries. DNV is the one of the world’s leading consulting organisation in
the area of Safety, Quality and the Environment consulting services for the Oil and Gas Industry. Organised by

DNV has a long tradition within offshore pipelines, providing certification, verification, and advisory
services. The DNV Rules for Submarine Pipeline Systems, first issued in 1976, is one of the major
international codes in use today for submarine pipelines. This has been updated over the years and
the latest DNV OS F101 Standard for Submarine Pipeline Systems released in 2000 has introduced a
major change in design philosophy with the application of Load Resistance Factor Design (Limit
State design approach) for pipelines.
Det Norske Veritas
Amongst those that have benefited from DNV courses are national oil and gas authorities, multi-
national companies in upstream, process and marine industries.
