Berke, Jamie “Profile or Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet” veryhealth.com 20, February 2018

https://www.verywellhealth.com/people-thomas-h-gallaudet-1046555

In Berkes paper it gives an idea or who created Sign Language and who was the first deaf

person that he had met. After reading up on Berkes and page it shows that Hopkins-Gallaudet

had health problems and had met Alice Cogswell who was deaf and learned Sign language from

her and went on to teach it in other places with Laurent Clerc who was also deaf and helped him

with his teachings. Knowing where sign language had come from and the oldest knowing deaf

person alive is all so intriguing and knowing this for my capstone can help me appreciate the

language itself.

Brookes, Richard “A Guide to the different types of Sign Language around the world”

k-international.com 10, May 2018

https://www.k-international.com/blog/different-types-of-sign-language-around-the-world/

In this article Brookes proves the different types of Sign Language and how it is used differently

based of the where you are in the world. After reading Brookes different subtopics of the

different types of Sign Language and how it have become its official deaf language. Sign

Language is a depicturized thing a long with deaf people in general because people look down

upon the deaf community because of their lack of hearing opportunities and knowing that there

are large amount of deaf people around the world should be acknowledged, as of today there are

138-300 different types of sign language and approximately 466 million deaf people that are

counted for. This article provides examples of how different sign language is all over the world

and how different or similar certain signs are. For my capstone knowing the history behind

American Sign Language and where it had come from is very important to get more a general

idea or sign language itself.

Larson, Brooke “History of Sign Language” linguistics.buy.edu 24, February 1998

http://linguistics.byu.edu/classes/Ling450ch/reports/sign-language.html

In this paper Larson says the history of what history is and what it is based off of. After reading

Larsons paper that there are various theories of how or why it started with scientific evidence to

support various views. It still remains that no one really knows where sign had originated, sign

could quite possibly be older than the humankind. The question of who invented sign language is

still a mystery and most people believe that the deaf community had created it themselves with

gestures and movements in order to communicate. For my capstone reading Larson's page had

given me the idea of sign language and possibly what it can be based off of.

Okrent, Arika “This is what American Sign Language 100 years ago” theweek.com 25 April

2015

https://theweek.com/articles/549445/what-american-sign-language-looked-like-100-years-ago

In this article, Okrent expresses the idea of how American Sign Language was first brought up

and how some people reacted to it. After reviewing Okrent’s work and thoroughly examining her

point that ASL had become a rich and full language. When ASL had first entered the world most

people were a little taken aback when everyone actually started using it. Sign language had been

pushed so effectively out of the realm of education that the deaf community feared for its

survival and wanted to do something about it. This article provides background information on

how American Sign Language had been brought up and how it was used in many different ways

with many different types of people. I want to learn ASL and knowing it origin is a great way to

start.
