Step Design 2

22.1 Introduction
We are creating Stitchless Stitches

22.2 Brainstorming
Ideation
1. Why are we doing this?
We are creating stitchless stitches to create an improved way to close wounds without
piercing the skin.

2. Measurable event objectives (What will we walk away with?),

We will walk away with a cheap and less traumatic alternative to stitches, a full
prototype of cor-stitches, an adhesive suture technique

3. Specific event inputs and outputs (Document deliverables)

Some resources we need include adhesive, some sort of rubber, silicon, or latex, and
silk string to ward off infection, as well as plastic packaging. We would also
eventually need some kind of business plant, where products will be produced on a
wider scale. We would also need workers to help facilitate the manufacture process.
FInally, we would need a delivery service, to export our output to the consumer.

Some questions to ponder

1. How big can our package be?

2. How big can our stitches be?

3. What kind of adhesive and material will the piece that contacts skin can be used?
(Take allergies and sensitive skin into account)

4. What spectrum of wounds is this product applicable for?

22.5 Research-Based Strategies for Promoting Creativity

● 22.5.1 Analogies
The skin naturally closes itself through the process of time. We are trying improve this process
of healing by pressing the skin together so that it can heal faster. We are pressing the skin
together through our stitchless stitches.

● 22.5.2 Reverse Engineering

We are reverse engineering stitches. We are taking the concept of closing the wound but putting
our our spin it. Instead of invasive wound closure, we are using force from both sides pushing
on the sides of the wounds to close the wound. This is a less painful way of wound closure.

● 22.5.3 Literature Search

Clozex
Clozex uses butterfly bandages to seal the skin together. Before applying them you have to dry
the wound. Once applied, the top of the Clozex device may have exposed edges that could
irritate overlying tissues. Also it may cause the development of postoperative edema that may
cause skin shearing, skin blistering or loss of adhesion to occur.

Zip Skin Closure

The Zip Skin Closure System is currently on the market, and also serves as an alternative to
stitches. Adhesive is applied to either sides of the wound, and ziptie like devices are used to
hold it together. However, the design can create excess bulk, and rubbing of hard plastic
against the wound could cause pain for the patient.
Steri-Strips
These are used for smaller wounds, and are often used on the face, because they can help
ease scarring. However, they cannot be used on deep wounds and cannot stop serious injury.

22.6 Functional Decomposition for Complex Systems

1. 22.6.1 Step 1: Decompose the Design Objective into a Series of
