Separating by Heating
The chemical engineer often needs to separate mixtures of materials. Potrelium is
one of the mixtures that occur naturally. Same mixture occur as a result of chemical
reactions. But when a reactions produce a material . the chemical engineer desired is
produced with some that are undesirable. So the chemical engineer need to separate it
torecover the wanted are.
Distillation has been used to separate mixtures of liquids since the earliest days of
chemistry. The principle is when a mixture is heated , some of the ingredients will
evaporate faster than others and this property can be used to separate. For example , the
chemical engineer have two liquids , A and B in equal parts. The chemical engineer heat
the mixture until it boils, the chemical engineer may find that the vapour contains 75% of
liquid A and 25% of liquid B. Liquid A is evaporating faster than liquid B.

Two liquids are easy to separate by distillation if the pure materials is have a
different boiling points. But now we can separate two liquids whose boiling points are
close together. Separation of two liquids is called binary distillation.
