An ammeter measures the electric current in a circuit. This may be described more formally
as the rate at which electrical charge passes through a given point in the circuit. The standard
unit of electrical current is the ampere, although the milliamp is used more often for home
experiments. A basic ammeter uses the electromagnetic field generated by an electrical
circuit to move a needle in proportion to the electrical current. Modern ammeters measure
current with a digital display.

Items you will need

 Two Leads With Alligator Clips

 Ammeter or Multimeter
 Battery
 Light Bulb

Step 1

Examine the structure of a simple circuit. The simplest possible circuit may be shown with a
battery and light bulb. The negative terminal of the battery is connected to the negative
terminal of the light bulb with a lead. Similarly, the positive terminal of the battery is
connected to the positive terminal of the light bulb with the other lead.

Step 2

Observe the inputs for an ammeter. A very basic ammeter might have one input and one
output. However, a commercial multimeter should have a specific input for measuring current
(typically marked "A" for amperage. The output is commonly marked "COM" for common
ground.

Step 3

Turn the ammeter on and set the selector to detect direct current (DC) amperage. A simple
ammeter may only be able to detect amperage but a multimeter can detect various electrical
quantities and will need to be "told" which quantity to measure. If the ammeter has a selector
for the range of current to display, select the highest available setting.
Step 4

Disconnect the positive lead from the light bulb and touch the probe from the ammeter's input
(A) to the positive lead from the battery. Touch the probe from the ammeter's negative
terminal (COM) to the positive terminal of the light bulb.

Step 5

Select progressively lower current ranges until you get a measurable result. If your ammeter
has this option, you'll want to "scale down" rather than "scale up". This will avoid damaging
the ammeter by subjecting it to a level of current that it's not prepared to measure.

Ammeter Function

An ammeter is a tool that is used by electricians to measure electrical current in wires. They
can be used to measure the change in current, or simply to check the amount of current that is
running through a certain wire in a house or business.

To measure the electromotive force (emf) and voltage clamp we use a tool called a voltmeter.
As for the measure of the strong currents, we use the Ammeter. Here is a picture that two
devices commonly used in schools, the tool functions consist of two, as a measure current
(ammeter) and as a measure of the potential difference (voltmeter).
How do I read the results of measurements using the ammeter or voltmeter? Before
discussing about how to read the results of measurements of electrical current and voltage,
we need to first know the parts of the device. Parts consisting of ammeters or voltmeters
measuring limit, the positive terminal and the negative terminal of the scale as seen in the
picture.

To read the measurement results ammeters / voltmeters we use the formula:

Description:
NP = value measurement, PJ = designation needle, ST = highest scale, and BU = limit
measure

example:
1.

Ammeters with a specified limit measure 5A, appointment needles 8 and the highest scale we
use is 50, then what is the value of measuring ammeters?
answer:

2. Here are two examples of two readings of the needle position Q and P

A. P values shown are :

Limit measure ( BU ) = 1 A
Highest scale ( ST ) = 100
Appointment Needle ( PJ ) = 54
What is the value measurement ( NP ) = ...... ? Answer :

B. Q value is designated :
Suppose we take the value of the limit measure is 100 mA .
Appointment needle 22 and the highest scale is 100 , then the value of Q
measurements are .... Answer :

Reading the results of measurements on a scale ammeter / voltmeter should be

familiarized and practiced constantly , it is to make it easier to answer the questions or
applications that require the application of speed in reading scale

Ammeter is a type of electronic measuring instrument that is used to evaluate the flow
of electric current in a particular circuit . Basically , the ammeter will measure current
flow in amperes . Ammeter designed to measure the amount and rate of flow of
electricity in both small and large devices . Sometimes referred to as a ampmeter ,
ammeter can be used in several different areas . This device is useful for measuring
the flow of electrical current through the cable system .

Company that manufactured electrical equipment will utilize the ammeter in testing
the product before offering it for sale .

One of the first to understand how the ammeter by D' Arsonval galvanometer .
Ammeter form works through the process of magnetic deflection to measure the flow
through a circuit amperage . Built with a moving coil design , the device can be
attached to a circuit .

Current flow to the device occurs on the coil and it will begin to shift in a magnetic
field . Level shifting and movement that occurs within the coil will help and
determine the flow of electric current .

Ammeter can be configured to measure direct current or alternating current . There

are examples of ammeter capable of measuring both types of current . Ammeter tend
to check relatively low resistance point . That is, if the ammeter is connected to a
source that is not compatible then there is a possibility that the device is damaged ,
and surge . Konlseting could cause permanent damage to the ammeter , and pose a
health hazard to humans in operating the device is damaged . For this reason , it is
advisable to allow qualified personnel to operate an ammeter .
