Unit: Genetics/Cellular Reproduction

9th Grade Biology Durango High School

Unit Start Date: February 25, 2019 Unit End Date: March 12, 2019

Unit Objective(s):

Students can develop a claim with supporting evidence to predict different environmental factors which influence variation within populations.
Students will model and predict changes in the frequency of traits in a population based on environmental or genetic pressures.

Essential Questions:

How does biodiversity affect survivability of a species?

In what ways can genetic modifications be helpful and harmful?

State Standards:

Biology, 9th Grade

Content Area Category: 2 - Life Science

1. DNA codes for the complex hierarchical organization of systems that enable life's functions.
Grade Level Expectation: 2 - Growth and division of cells in complex organisms occurs by mitosis, which differentiates specific cell
types.

Evidence Outcomes - Students can:

A. Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining
complex organisms. (HS-LS1-4)

Literacy:

Texts students will read:

● The Faces of Cancer biographies.
● Cancer and Biotechnology articles.
● Biggs, Alton. Biology. McGraw-Hill Education, 2012.
Chapter 9-13 (pp 242-381).
https://www.mheducation.com/prek-12/program/glencoe-biology-20122012/MKTSP-GBL14M0.html?page=1&sortby=title&order=asc&bu=seg

What students will write:

● Describe in order the phases of mitosis/cell division, including pertinent vocabulary, using pop-beads as a visual aid.
● Summarize the effects cancer has in humans for socratic seminar.
● Synthesize, in typing, the processes involved in mitosis in their summative performance tasks.

Numeracy/data students will need to analyze and apply:

● Figure 9.1 - Surface Area to Volume Ratio of a cell (page 244)
● Figure 9.3 - Stages of the Cell Cycle Infographic (page 246)
● Figure 9.6 - Detailed Cell cycle diagram (page 249)
● Figure 9.12 - Irregular Cell Division infographic (page 254)
● Figure 9.13 - Differentiated Cells from stem cells diagram (page 256)
Content vocabulary list and definitions:
Glencoe Biology Textbook:
Reproductive Genetics
➢ Cell Cycle - the three main stages of cellular reproduction
➢ DNA - base pairs T, A, C, and G that make up all genetic codes
➢ RNA - match with DNA for cell replication, Includes base pairs A, U, G, and C
➢ Interphase - the cell stage in which DNA is replicated; the cell grows and matures.
➢ Prophase - second stage of the cell cycle. Chromosomes condense
➢ Metaphase - third stage of the cell cycle. Chromosomes attach to spindles and centrioles and align along the center of the cell. Sister
chromatids cross over.
➢ Anaphase - fourth stage of the cell cycle. Chromosomes are pulled to opposite sides of the cell via the spindles.
➢ Telophase - fifth stage of the cell cycle. Nucleus forms around both sets of sister chromatids, Cleavage furrow begins to divide down the cell
➢ Cytokinesis - last stage in the cell cycle. Cell plate forms and 2 new cells are formed.
➢ Genetic Modifications - gene editing in cells.
➢ Cancer - abnormal cell growth and division.
➢ Apoptosis - the death of a cell.
➢ Carcinogens - substances that cause cancer of cells
➢ Mutations - errors in DNA translation
➢ Chromosomes - tightly compacted strands of DNA
➢ Stem cell - A cell that can be specialized multiple ways
➢ Spindles - filaments that attach to, and pull on chromosomes during cellular division.

Summative assessment

● Unit Assessment: Multiple Choice Assessment covering reproductive genetics, cancer, inheritance of traits.
● Performance Task: Students develop a claim with supporting evidence to predict different environmental factors which influence
variation within populations. Or, student model and predict changes in the frequency of traits in a population based on
environmental or genetic pressures.

Formative assessments

● Mitosis pop-bead Diagrams

● Onion Root Tip Slides
● Crossing Over Chromosome “Lab”
● Faces of Cancer Data Tables
● Faces of Cancer Socratic Seminar
● Hormone Monster crossing over activity
