Compressive &
Tensile
Strenght:
Objective:

1-To compare (check) the values found by the experiment

with the needed values from the design.
2-To know how to perform such experiment on cement
mortars.
3- to calculate compressive & tensile strenght of harden
concrete using cubes samples and cylinder samples.

Introduction:

The strenght of concrete is subjected to many variables

because concrete is made from different materials by
different methods and mixing properties, so the result will
be variable.
For those reson concrete must be tested during a job
rather than once at the beginning .
The strenght in our test depends on the sample age, water
content, the loading rate, temperature and other variables .

Standard:

A. Compressive strength of cement using mortar cubes

B.S 12 - part 2
ASTM : C 190 .
B. Tensile strength of cement using mortar briquettes

B.S 12 - part 2
ASTM : C 190.

Apparatus:

A. Compressive strength
1-Cube moulds: Three moulds are required; the
surface area should be 100cm. And it is volume =
10x10x10 .
2-Glass plates.
3-Standard vibration machine.
4-Compressive testing machine.
5-Curing tank.
B. Tensile strength
1-Briquette moulds; Six moulds to produce briquettes
of standard shape.
2-Glass plates.
3-Tensile testing machine with a constant rate of load
applying.
4-Curing tank.

Calculation:

STANDARD CEMENT :

The sand used in jordan is standard swieleh sand which of

pure siliceous material and is all practically of one size.
Aii particales are nearly spherical and are smaller than an
850 μmm (no. 18 BS ) sieve and at least 90% of sand is
retained on a 600 μmm (no. 25 BS ) .
Discussion and conclusion:

Experiment, i get three result of tensile machining, but

these result are too far, this because the compaction isn’t
true. And we must to put the cube mold in water to
continue the reaction, which called “curing” .
Final, the mold must give (23MPa) after one week .
--(15) MPa after 3-days .
--and tensile = (1/10) compressive strenght
-- strenght after (1 week) = (2/3) strenght after (28 days ) .

General comments

‫مؤمن توفيق احمد العتوم‬ ATOOMUS 4

1-Mortars are used instead of concrete because of the
large variability of results on concrete, and since the
influence of cement on the properties of mortar & concrete
is qualitatively the same.
The sand used is standard Sweileh sand (pure siliceous -2
&all particles are nearly spherical &with one size)
of the sand should be retained on 600 umm (no. 25 3-90%
.BS)sieve& all should pass 850 umm (no. 18 BS)sieve
It should be noted that the relation between concrete & -4
.mortar is linear
