6th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners,

Our first reading today from Jeremiah has

a lot of wisdom. It contrasts the wicked
who trust only in human beings and the
‘blessed’ person who trusts in God. How
sad is it to hear ‘if good comes, he has no
eyes for it’.

The self-sufficient person is compared to a As Archbishop Helder Camara said

barren desert shrub ; the humble person is
like a fruitful tree planted beside a flowing
river. These images prepare us for the
Gospel. Here we read St. Lukes version of
the Sermon on the Mount. It has less of a
flow to it than St. Mathews’ - but none-the-
less all the ingredients are there.
The word ‘blessed’, to me, is a more
significant and helpful translation than
‘happy’. ‘’Blessed are you who are poor:
yours is the kingdom of God’’ etc. Jesus
invites us to make a choice. We can take
our lead and live by prestige and
importance. Or we can live by the values
of Gods’ kingdom, poverty of spirit, purity
of heart, capacity to show mercy and
forgiveness, the ability to suffer in the
name of right etc. This desired way of
living is the constant challenge in our
spiritual journey.
We need to be aware that when Jesus says
‘blessed are the poor’, he is not giving a
blessing to starvation, poverty and misery.
These are evil. What is being blessed is
reliance on God. It is God who can fill our
emptiness; not ourselves.
‘’Saints may be found in slums, but we
cannot retain slums in order to make them
a breeding ground of Saints.’’
As we listen to these words of Jesus, we are
invited to become more aware of the many
blessings we have in life. We need to
treasure life in all its aspects, beginning
with ourselves, and take nothing for
granted.
CLIMATE Justice! What do you think of
the actions of young people leaving class
last Friday as a protest in order to
highlight the whole question of the care of
the planet, climate change, ecology etc.?
While you are thinking about your reply to
yourself, have a look at the statement from
Greta Thunberg, a young Swedish 15 year
old (copies available) who spoke in Poland
last year at COP24, (the International
convention on climate). She gave a very
challenging presentation!

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT
The Fairtrade fortnight is an annual event in
which fair and ethical trading values are
celebrated. A daily ‘cuppa’ for you can mean
clean water for tea farmers and workers.
Come along and join us for this year’s
“BIG BREW”, led by our Confirmation
Candidates on Sunday, 3rd March after
each Mass. Parishioners are invited to bring
in Fairtrade cakes and biscuits as well.
All the proceed from this event will go
towards obtaining a memorial bench at
Downhills Park for Chloe Quiliec.

Make time to spend a moment alone with
God in thanksgiving, prayer and adoration.
The short talk, adoration and music will be
led by the Verbum Dei Missionaries.
INSIGHT II:
WOMEN & MEN OF THE BIBLE
This course offers an insight into the lives of
various women and men in the Bible,
specifically from the Old Testament.

If you are a member of

Course. The course will provide the
opportunity to explore the foundation of the
Christian faith. Each session starts with a
meal, followed by a talk and then a
discussion in small groups. The course will
be held on Monday evenings in the Parish
Hall starting on 18th March at 7:30pm.

JUSTICE AND PEACE REP NEEDED!
What is “Justice and Peace”?
It’s about wanting to make a difference,
witnessing to gospel values in society, not
only by helping those close at hand, or
sending gifts overseas, but asking why
problems are arising, and whether we can
speak up for change. We are currently
working on such things as climate
protection, Fairtrade, the refugee situation,
and peace in the Middle East. Justice and
Peace reps can publicise our work, maintain
a parish notice board, or raise awareness in
the parish. Can you be your parish Justice
and Peace representative?
