In this ebook we’ll explore what butyrate is, and the many ways it
impacts your body. We’ll also discuss the best type of butyrate, in the
form of tributyrin, and reveal how our supplement, Complete Biotic,
can transform your health.

“All diseases begin in the gut.” – Hippocrates
In fact, researchers say that 90% of all disease can be linked back to the
gut in some way. There are of course other factors in your body that
contribute, but the microbiome definitely plays a major role. Digestive
disorders, cancer, autoimmune disease, arthritis, diabetes, weight gain,
and even depression can all be linked to the microbiome. (3) This is not
a comprehensive list, just an example of how many different conditions
your gut influences.
www.HealusHealth.com 3
community, supplements claiming to help heal the gut have become
popular. Probiotics, in particular, are touted as the cure-all when it
comes to gut health. The problem with probiotics is that they just
aren’t getting the job done. There’s been a good 20 years of probiotic
praise, yet people are still sick, and new autoimmune conditions are
being labeled every year. Something is clearly not working here.
For one, even the most expensive probiotics are not absorbed
completely. A probiotic has to make it through stomach acid and
digestive enzymes before it reaches your intestines. This is why you
see probiotics in high quantities such as 50 billion, because a good
portion of them are going to be lost along the way. Whatever you are
left with will be introduced into the microbiome, but this introduction
does not always go over very well.
www.HealusHealth.com 4
group, as the existing bacteria are defending their turf. Remember,
these microbial cells are living beings, and all living beings have the
desire to live and thrive. Anything that feels threatening to their
survival (even if it is good bacteria) is going to be met with some
resistance initially. So if it feels like there is a little war going on
inside your tummy at times, that’s because there actually is.
This is when taking a probiotic
can sometimes cause things to
be worse, especially if you take
the same one day after day.
You keep introducing the
same 4 strains into your
microbiome, while neglecting
the other 5,596 strains. You
may create an unhealthy
dominance of one “good”
bacteria over another. For
example, lactobacillus is a
popular strain included in
many probiotics due to its
benefits. When in balance, lactobacillus contributes to a healthy
microbiome. However, if you have too much lactobacillus, it can throw
off the balance of your microbiome and lead to such conditions as IBS,
diabetes, and weight gain. (5)
Does this mean that your probiotic consumption has been an entire
waste of time (and money)? Well…yes and no. Probiotics can help, but
only on a short-term basis, and only if you need the particular strain
that is in that probiotic to begin with. It is common for many people to
feel an improvement on probiotics initially, or temporarily.
Unfortunately, evidence has shown that it doesn’t do much in the long
run to change the balance of your microbiome, and it can even make it
worse.
If you feel like you’ve been scammed by this industry, don’t be.
www.HealusHealth.com 5
Medical science is always evolving as our technology and knowledge
expands. Probiotics were a great start when it comes to gut health.
And this industry certainly provided a lot more education and
awareness concerning the microbiome. But as medicine evolves, it’s
best to evolve with it and not stay stuck in old ideologies. After all,
there was once a time that we thought bloodletting and using leeches
were a cutting edge healing therapy!
That solution came by chance (or perhaps fate) upon meeting an animal
feed developer from Spain. Brian learned that this man was utilizing
something called butyrate in the feed instead of antibiotics to prevent
bacterial infections in farm animals. They found that butyrate would
enhance the animals’ immune system, fight off infections, and increase
fertility rates. They even started bottling up butyrate for dogs in Spain,
as it seemed to enrich their health and expand their lifespan. Brian,
understanding the connection between the immune system and the
microbiome, asked if this product would work for humans. The
developer didn’t see why not, and agreed to work with Brian on
bringing this form of butyrate into America.
The first shipment of butyrate that Brian received from Spain was
actually made for dogs and even had pictures of German Shepherds on
the bottle (true story)! But that didn’t matter because the results spoke
for themselves. Chronic acid reflux gone in just one dose, IBS
www.HealusHealth.com 6
symptoms disappeared within a few days, and autoimmune conditions
healed rapidly. Not to mention patients’ stool panel results were night
and day! The two men knew they were on to something big here and
continued to spend the next 16 years researching and developing
butyrate into the Complete Biotic supplement we have today.
www.HealusHealth.com 7
Without butyrate, there would be chaos in your microbiome,
colon cells would die, and the intestines would literally begin to
deteriorate. When it comes to maintaining a healthy gut, butyrate
is in charge.
Given the huge role that butyrate plays in the gut, it’s not surprising that
butyrate has such a positive impact on a variety of digestive disorders
and diseases.
Acid Reflux/GERD
In truth, acid reflux and GERD have very little to do with stomach acid,
and instead are the result of an unbalanced microbiome.
Gastrointestinal pressure due to poor digestion, an overgrowth of
www.HealusHealth.com 8
pathogenic bacteria in the small intestine, and too little stomach acid
are all direct causes of acid reflux and GERD. (7) To resolve this
condition for good, one needs to focus on healing the gut. Medications
to lower stomach acid are only masking the symptoms and actually
making the condition much worse. It is common for people to find relief
from acid reflux almost immediately with butyrate supplementation.
Butyrate will help lower inflammation in the gut, which reduces
gastrointestinal pressure and improves digestion. It will balance the
microbiome and fight off pathogenic bacteria in the small intestine.
Butyrate helps to repair damaged tissue in the esophageal lining due to
chronic GERD, which provides a tremendous amount of relief. (8) If you
are looking for a long term solution for acid reflux and GERD that
doesn’t involve taking an antacid for the rest of your life, butyrate is
your answer.
IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition that commonly presents as
alternating forms of constipation and diarrhea. It’s also the catch-all
diagnosis for digestive complaints that can’t otherwise be diagnosed. In
a nutshell, you have an imbalance of good to bad bacteria in your
microbiome. It’s not a surprise that countless studies on IBS have shown
significant improvement of symptoms with butyrate. By reducing
inflammation, improving digestion, and balancing the microbiome,
butyrate can make your IBS symptoms a thing of the past. (9)
Candida
This yeast that lives in the digestive tract might just be one of the
peskiest conditions out there. Anyone that’s been battling candida for a
long time can relate. Candida is behind a wide variety of symptoms
such as bloating, yeast infections, skin issues, depression, hormone
imbalance, and even toe fungus. Killing candida can seem futile at
times. There are different herbs and diets that can be very helpful in
managing candida, but they don’t always provide long term relief.
Butyrate, on the other hand, can keep candida in check. By regulating
the microbiome, butyrate creates an environment where candida can no
www.HealusHealth.com 9
longer thrive. Long time candida sufferers can finally find the solution
they’ve been so desperately seeking. (10)
Parasites
It’s safe to say that if you are alive you have parasites. In fact, it’s
practically impossible not to. Some parasites are actually a fundamental
part of our microbiome to begin with. These little critters can vary in
size from
microscopic to foot-
long tape worms.
And while some may
be natural to our gut’s
ecosystem, others are
not. Even more
problematic is the
fact that parasites
breed and grow
rather quickly. If you
are not in the practice
of cleansing parasites
on an annual basis,
then there is a good
chance that you are walking around with your own village of critters that
are wreaking havoc on your body. From digestive disorders to joint pain
and arthritis, these little guys can cause some serious damage. Similar
to candida, butyrate helps to keep parasites in check and repair any
damage they’ve done. While it’s still important to cleanse out parasites
periodically, butyrate’s properties help reduce their numbers and keep
them in line. (11)
Leaky Gut
Leaky gut is a common condition that encompasses a wide array of
digestive, allergy, and immune issues. When there is chronic
inflammation in the gut, the lining of the intestines can become thin
and permeable, allowing contents inside to pass through, hence the
www.HealusHealth.com 10
name leaky gut. A small molecule of food may escape through this
damaged area of the intestinal lining. Once outside, the immune
system does not recognize this molecule and sees it as a foreign
invader. Your immune system's response is to attack. This can result in a
wide variety of symptoms such as bloating, headaches, a stuffy nose,
and hives. Over time however, leaky gut can lead to more serious
autoimmune diseases as the body continues to attack itself. Whether
you are dealing with minor food allergies, or a full blown autoimmune
disease, you are really dealing with leaky gut. This is where butyrate
really shines. Butyrate is responsible for repairing and keeping the
integrity of the intestinal wall intact. Lack of butyrate will lead to
inflammation and tissue damage. Studies have shown butyrate provides
significant improvement to the gut barrier function and reduces
intestinal permeability. (12)
Colon Cancer
Perhaps one of the most exciting discoveries about butyrate is that it
can not only prevent, but reduce tumor cell growth in the colon. Studies
have shown for a while now that fiber reduces colon cancer risk. We are
discovering that the reason fiber helps in this case, is because fiber
produces butyrate. It is butyrate itself that has the ability to inhibit
tumor cell growth and prevent cancer to begin with. In a study
presented for the American Association for Cancer Research, mice were
fed either a low or high fiber diet, and some were given butyrate with
this fiber, while others were not. All of the mice were then given a
cancer-causing chemical so that they would develop colon tumors. The
number of tumors was 75% lower in mice that were fed a high fiber diet
and were given butyrate, compared with the other mice. However, the
high fiber diet by itself, without the butyrate did not protect against
colon cancer. Scott Bultman, an assistant professor at the University of
North Carolina School of Medicine concluded, “Our study showed that
www.HealusHealth.com 11
it is not the high fiber itself that has a protective effect against cancer,
but it’s a combination of the fiber plus having the right types of
bacteria producing butyrate.” (13)
www.HealusHealth.com 12
Scientists are referring to the gut as the “second brain” because like
the brain, the gut has its own nervous system. Just as the brain
operates within the central nervous system (CNS), the gut has the
enteric nervous system (ENS). Similar to the brain, the enteric nervous
system puts out more than 30 neurotransmitters. In fact 95 percent of
the body's serotonin is found in the gut. While your gut may not be
actively thinking thoughts, it is certainly influencing your mood and
emotions.
www.HealusHealth.com 13
know that the majority of neurotransmitter signaling is actually coming
from your gut. Butyrate has shown significant improvement in mood
and energy helping to alleviate chronic anxiety and depression. (17)
Neurodegenerative Disease
In Alzheimer’s studies we are finding that butyrate acts as a fuel source
for the brain, increasing mitochondrial function and aiding in tissue
repair. As one of the causes of Alzheimer’s is a reduction in energy
supply for the brain, having butyrate as fuel may just prevent this
disease to begin with. Studies suggest that butyrate’s action to
reduce brain cell damage and inflammation can help to prevent
Parkinson’s disease as well. Similar findings have been found in
reference to Huntington’s disease as butyrate protects against nerve
toxicity and improves muscle function. Butyrate also helps to improve
the learning and memory centers of the brain in all neurodegenerative
diseases. (18)
Diabetes
In type 2 diabetes, butyrate helps to improve insulin sensitivity and
www.HealusHealth.com 14
increase energy metabolism. (19) Studies have even found that butyrate
may help protect against the development of type 1 diabetes. (20)
Heart Disease
Butyrate can help to
prevent
arteriosclerosis by
reducing plaque
buildup in the arteries
and lowering
inflammation. (21)
Studies have shown a
reduction in high
cholesterol and
lowering of
triglycerides in
butyrate
supplementation. (22) In cases of critically high blood pressure, butyrate
is actually being used very successfully to stabilize and maintain a target
blood pressure rate. Not surprisingly, several studies have linked
hypertension to an unbalanced microbiome. (23)
Autoimmune Disease
As mentioned earlier, leaky gut can lead to a number of autoimmune
www.HealusHealth.com 15
diseases. Since butyrate is the key to healing leaky gut, it would stand
to reason that it could have a beneficial effect on many autoimmune
conditions. However, butyrate goes beyond just healing the gut lining,
as it works directly with the immune system. In animal and in vitro
studies, butyrate causes a reduction of pro-inflammatory
cytokines and increases regulatory T cells (Tregs). Tregs help your
body distinguish between itself and everything else. Without enough
regulatory T cells, your immune system may attack your own organs,
which is what an autoimmune disease is. Butyrate’s ability to regulate
this immune process is essential to turning around autoimmune
disease. (24)
Pancreas
Butyrate seems to have a protective function on the pancreas in
particular. Studies have shown butyrate’s positive effect in terms of
diabetes and pancreatic function. Findings show that butyrate serves to
protect the pancreas from tissue damage in cases of chronic
pancreatitis. (26) Butyrate can even cause the death of cancer cells
(apoptosis) in cases of pancreatic cancer. (27)
Allergies
When it comes to both food allergies and seasonal allergies, butyrate
has a very positive effect. Allergies are essentially an overactive immune
response to an irritant. As previously mentioned, butyrate helps to
reduce an inflammatory immune system reaction, thereby reducing the
body's allergic response. Studies have shown this to be effective in
cases of seasonal allergies. (28) When it comes to food allergies,
butyrate assists in healing the gut to prevent food allergies from
www.HealusHealth.com 16
developing in the first place.
Weight Loss
Butyrate has become well known for its ability to help people lose
unwanted fat. Studies have shown that our makeup of microbiota in the
gut can directly contribute to weight gain. Butyrate helps to balance
and alter this composition, leading to weight loss in overweight people.
Butyrate helps to make the hormone leptin, which is responsible for
decreasing your appetite and helps to prevent overeating. Butyrate also
assists in the breakdown of fats and fatty acid synthesis, directing fat to
be used as fuel instead of stored. (29)
Liver Function
Butyrate serves as damage control for organs like the liver by helping to
reverse alcohol damage. In animal studies, mice were given a high dose
of butyrate and then a high dose of ethanol. The mice with the butyrate
showed far less inflammation and damage in the control groups. As well
as preventing alcohol damage, butyrate can aid in liver lipogenesis,
regulating cholesterol. (31)
Cancer
www.HealusHealth.com 17
As we established, butyrate can inhibit the growth of tumors in the
colon, but additional studies show that butyrate’s cancer fighting
benefits are far reaching. Butyrate is shown to promote cancer cell
death, and deprive tumors from being nourished and growing.
(32) This has proven to be so effective that butyrate is being used as a
component in certain anticancer drugs. (33) Butyrate helps to increase
the P53 tumor suppressor gene. This protein prevents cancer formation
and functions as a tumor suppressor. The P53 tumor suppressor gene
has been described as “the guardian of the genome,” given its crucial
role in maintaining genetic stability and the prevention of cancer
formation. This positive evidence has prompted further studies to be
done on butyrate and cancer. (34)
Reduces Inflammation
Butyrate’s anti-inflammatory effect has a positive impact not just on the
gut, but on the rest of the body. It can reduce organ inflammation,
arthritis and joint pain. Butyrate’s ability suppress the activity of certain
proteins that produce inflammation make it a great pain fighter, as well
as reducing any tissue damage. (35)

and proper supplementation to fuel your butyrate production.
Supplementing Butyrate
The problem with relying on fiber alone, is that most people aren’t
going to be able to get in 40-50 grams on a daily basis. Even if we are
able to get in that much fiber, most people's guts are so compromised
at this point that we aren’t digesting food properly. It’s a bit of a catch
22. You need enough butyrate to properly break down fiber in order
www.HealusHealth.com 19
to make more
butyrate. If you have
any sort of digestive
or immune
compromise, you’re
most likely caught in
this vicious cycle.
This is where
supplementing with
butyrate can be very
helpful. Butyrate
lowers inflammation
in the gut, supports digestion and absorption, and keeps the
microbiome in check. When you take in the right form of butyrate you
can break this cycle, heal your gut, and start making your own
butyrate.
Basic math of bioavailability tells you that you are lucky to get
approximately 30% delivery from sodium butyrate. Most supplements
with butyrate have only 60 mg to 100 mg per capsule. At 30%
absorption that is only 18 mg to 30 mg per two capsules. To put that
into perspective, our butyrate supplement Complete Biotic, in the form
of tributyrin, provides 500 mg per capsule. Our product also utilizes
an innovative encapsulation technique called Quantitative
www.HealusHealth.com 20
Nitrogen Atmosphere (QNP ™). This specialized matrix keeps the
ingredients stable and active without refrigeration. It is encoded to be
gastro-resistant for 100% absorption in the small and large intestines.
To get close to that amount of butyrate into your system, you would
need to take 10-15 capsules of other brands compared to 1 capsule of
Complete Biotic. We’ve been developing this formula for the past 16
years, so we’ve definitely done our homework!
www.HealusHealth.com 21
into 2-3 doses. This is a safe dose to stay on for a few months. In our
clinical studies most patients that started at a higher dosage were able
to back down to a maintenance dose as their condition subsided. The
time varies depending on the severity of the condition as well as the
overall health, diet, and lifestyle of the person. To figure out
approximately how much butyrate your body needs you can also do
the challenge test below. To figure out approximately how much
butyrate your body needs you can also do the challenge test below.
To do this test you will begin increasing your dosage from 1 capsule at
a time to 2 at a time, then 3, then 4 (do not exceed 4 capsules at a
time). During this test you are paying attention to any discomfort you
might feel such as a burning or slight nausea. For example, if you work
your way up to 3 capsules at a time and begin to feel a slight gnawing
feeling in your gut, then you know you’ve done too much. Go ahead
and back down to 2. You would remain on 2 capsules 3 times a day
until you feel the same sensation, then back down to 1.
Maintenance Dosage
1-2 pills a day
Once your condition or symptoms subside you can continue with the
maintenance dose of 1-2 pills a day. This dosage will supply your body
with enough Butyrate to maintain your overall health. If at any point
your health status changes you can begin to increase your dosage
again as needed.
What to Expect
When first taking the Complete Biotic you may notice that your stool
www.HealusHealth.com 22
becomes firmer, this is a good sign. You may even experience a few
detox symptoms as your microbiome is worked over and the Complete
Biotic begins killing off pathogenic bacteria. This may consist of an
increase in bowel movements and slight discomfort or fatigue. Any
detox symptoms will be short lived. Mostly, you will find less bloating,
less inflammation, better digestion and improved immune health. Over
time you’ll find many ailments clearing up in your body.
There is no right diet plan for everyone, but in general you want to
focus on eating whole, organic foods. If you are vegan, eat a whole,
plant-based diet with organic fruits and veggies, nuts, and seeds. If you
are paleo, still eat a mostly whole, plant-based diet with organic
veggies, and organic clean protein. Keep away from inflammatory foods
like gluten, dairy, and soy while you are healing.
Focus on Fiber
www.HealusHealth.com 23
Don’t Drink Water With Your Food
Your mother was right, chewing your food is a vital part of maintaining
a healthy body. You may have heard the expression, digestion starts in
the mouth, it’s true. When you thoroughly chew your food you activate
the necessary enzymes you need to properly break down your food.
This means that your body will not only absorb more nutrients and
vitamins, but it also means less bloating and digestive upset. To make
this easier try slowing down when you eat, and don’t dine distracted.
In other words don’t shovel food into your mouth at a rapid pace while
you are mindlessly watching tv. When you are present with your meal
you automatically slow down, chew more, and actually enjoy your
food! We understand that in a multitasking society, this isn’t always an
easy habit to adopt. But creating that space and time to properly eat
and digest your food can have a huge impact on your health and well
being.

Reduce Stress
Remember when we talked earlier about the gut-brain connection? As
much as the gut affects the thoughts you think, the thoughts you think
affect the gut. Stress really is a killer. You can take all the
supplements in the world and eat perfectly, but if you are highly
stressed all the time you are never going to heal completely. This
is why at Healus Health we focus on emotional health as well. Learning
stress reduction techniques such as meditation, journaling, yoga,
laughing, breathing, and even just taking a walk, can literally save your
life. For more stress reduction tips, follow our blog at
