1.0 INTRODUCTION
M/s GR Infra projects limited has awarded the work of Soil
Investigation works for the proposed Four laning of Watambare –
Mangalwadha section of NH-166 from km 276+000 to km 321+600

3.0 FIELD WORK

3.1 Boring
Bore holes of 150 mm dia. were drilled by Rotary drilling upto the
specified depth/refusal depth. Refusal was obtained in all the
boreholes at varying depths. In refusal strata rotary drilling was
resorted by using Hydraulic feed drilling machine with Nx size
diamond bits as per IS code of practice and as per the Direction
of Engineer-in-charge.
The details about the Chainage, Borehole No’s and water table
depth are given in Table 1 below:

Chainage Depth of Bore Water Table

2 20.00 15.10
294+125 ROB
3 20.00 15.20
4 20.00 15.80

3.2 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

These tests were conducted at every 1.5m intervals and every
change of strata or wherever possible. The tests were performed
by driving into the soil (bore holes cleaned of any loose material)
a standard split spoon sampler with the help of a standard
hammer with a free fall of 75 cms on a driving head as described
in IS: 2131. This head was attached to “A” drill rod to the other
end of which the sampler was fitted. The number of blows needed
to penetrate the first, second and third stages (each of 15 cm’s)

2
depth of the sampler length, were noted. The number of blows (N-
value) as given in the bore hole data sheets is the numerical sum
of blows counted during the second & third stage only i.e. for a
depth of 30 cms.
The observed SPT (N – Values) are first corrected for Overburden
and then for dilatancy as per IS 2131:1981.
Overburden Corrected SPT Value N’ = CN * N
CN = Overburden Correction Factor as per IS 2131-1981
Correction for Dilatancy N” = 15 + 0.50 * (N’-15) for N’>15.
For N’<15 no correction is done for dilatancy.
3.3 Collection of Samples
Samples of soil and Rock were collected from the boreholes
wherever possible as per IS Code of practice.
3.4 Recording of water table
Water table was met at varying depths in boreholes at
the time of Soil investigation which was carried out in the
months of June-July 2018. The details are given in Table I above
and in the respective borelogs.

4.0 LABORATORY TESTS

A visual and discrete examination of all the soil samples collected,
was carried out for deciding the number and type of tests to be
tested from each bore hole. Based on the strata met at site the
following tests were conducted on samples to classify them and to
evaluate their index and Engineering properties.
ROCK SAMPLES
a) Density as per IS : 13030
b) Unconfined Compressive Strength as per IS: 9143
c) Point Load as per IS : 8764
d) Water Absorption as per IS: 1124

3
5.0 General Geology of the Area
The terrain is hilly and rugged comprising groups of low-lying
hillocks, rising between elevations of 100 and 400 meters above
mean sea level. The area is drained by the Gad, Janvli, and
Tamhane rivers which originate in the Western Ghats and flow
westwards. Numerous streams join these rivers during monsoon
resulting in their torrential flow.
Geological boundaries have been delineated between the
Archaean rock units, Kaladgi’s, Deccan lava flows and laterite. The
rock units recognised are Dharwarian metasediments comprising
micaceous gneiss, banded ferruginous quartzite, hornblende
schist, amphibolites, graphite schist and phyllite cut by basic
ultramafic rocks, which have also undergone metamorphism.
Sediments referable to Kaladgi’s with low dips rest unconformably
over Archaean rocks and Deccan Basalt flows have flooded over
all the older formations. The Archaean rocks have a NW-SE
regional trend conforming to the Dharwarian tectonic axis and
appear to represent strips of tightly folded synclines and anticlines.
The Kaladgi rocks are nearly horizontally bedded though at a few
places a gentle westerly tilt is discernible.
Deccan Basalts. Except for the laterites capping few plateau tops,
the Archaean metasediments in the Gad valley sections, and the
Kaladgi formations in the NE corner, the entire area is occupied by
the Deccan Basalts emplaced as horizontal lava flows. Though
they occur as outliers with wide lateral extent, at a few places they
form isolated hills attaining heights of more than 300 metres above
MSL. These flows appear to rest on an uneven topography as
disclosed by the irregular junction of the lava flows with the older

4
rocks with an uneven pre-trappean topography. The terrain
occupied by the basalts is under laterite cover.

The Stratiagraphic sequence is as given below.

6.0 SEISMICITY
The present site falls in the seismic zone III and therefore, the region
is vulnerable to earthquakes creating low to moderate damage
risk from earthquakes where the maximum expected intensity is VI
(MSK). As refusal stratum was observed at shallow depths the
liquefaction analysis is not carried out.

7.0 STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF SOIL

ROB @ 294+125
At the proposed ROB four boreholes namely (BH1 to BH 4) were
drilled. The borehole locations are shown in Fig: Plan 294+125. In
refusal /rocky strata the boreholes were advanced by Hydraulic
feed rotary drilling machine using Nx size Barrel with Diamond core
bit upto the specified depth. From the samples of the core
recovery, drill log, representative samples, wash samples and
return of drilled water from bore hole the strata are classified and
the details borehole wise are given below:

BH 1: The borehole was drilled upto 20.0 m depth. The refusal

strata was observed at 0.50m depth. The over burden strata is
classified as Silty Sand. In refusal strata is classified as Highly to
Moderately weathered Highly/Moderately fractured Greyish colour
Basalt upto the depth drilled. Core recovery is varying from 14% to
74% upto the depth drilled. RQD is Nil upto 6.0m depth, from 9.0m

6

8.0 DESIGN CRITERIA
Any foundation is to be safe against possible failure against
a) Excessive Shear failure (the bearing pressure should be with in
permissible limits) and
b) Excessive Settlement.

The latter depends upon not only on the type of soil in the
foundation but also on the type of foundation, material used for
construction and functionality of the structure.
8.1 Design Methodology
Footing Foundation has been analysed for an allowable
settlements of 50mm. Assuming scour depth of 0.50m below
Ground level.
8.1.1 Foundation Based on SPT & .
a) Shear failure criteria
The safe bearing pressure from Shear failure criteria can be
obtained, using the equation given below
Qu = q ( Nq - 1 ) Sq Dq Iq + 0.5 B  N SD I W'
where,
B = Width of the footing in m
Dq,D = Depth factors
Sq,S = Shape factors
Iq,I = Inclination factors
Nq,N = Bearing capacity factor
q = Effective overburden pressure at foundation, in t/m2
W' = Water table correction factor
 = Bulk unit wt. of foundation soil, in t/m3

8
b) Settlements:
a) Soil profiles are given for each borehole. The soil profile, which is
likely to cause greater settlements, is to be considered for
calculations.

b) The imposed load at the foundation level is likely to compress

the soil up to a depth of approximately equal to 1.5B below the
foundations.

c) The settlements can be calculated using IS: 8009 Part 1 -1976.

9.0 COMPUTATIONS
The safe bearing Pressure for Footing Foundations are calculated
and are given at Annexure I.

10.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
