Batting Drills

Target batting
- Two cones are set up approximately 5 metres apart to form a goal, with a batting tee place
between, 10 metres from the cones
- In pairs, students are to take turns trying to hit the ball off the tee in-
between the goals
- The person not batting will field the ball and return it back to the batter
- Once the batter has hit 6 balls (an over) the students switch roles and
continue
Stage 1
Progression
- The hitting distance/size of goals can be varied based on ability/age
- Remove goals and use one cone for the batter to aim at
- Fielder can act as goalie between goals
KTP
- Feet shoulder width apart
- Bent knees and bottom high
- Watch ball into hands
- Step, stop, swing

Blocking the ball

- Students are to be split up equal groups, preferably with 5/6 people
- Each group has a batter, bowler and wicketkeeper, with the rest of the students becoming
fielders
- When the batter is ready, the bowler underarm throws the ball
to the batter, having the ball bounce 3-4 times before reaching
the batter
- The batter leans forwards and blocks the ball with the bat next
to their front leg
- Each batter has 6 shots, then the wicketkeeper becomes the
batter and all students rotate through roles
- Ensure all students have at least one turn at batting
Stage 2
Progression
- Have the bowler underarm throw so that the ball reaches the
batter with one bounce
- Aim to block the ball and keep it within the batting area
- Batters can be advanced to striking the ball
KTP
- Dip head and shoulders over the ball
- Front foot moves towards ball, bent knee
- Bat bought straight down (vertical) next to front leg to block the ball
- Progress to step, stop, swing

Rapid Fire Batting

- Students are organised into teams of 4-6
- 2 goals (cones 5m apart) are set up approximately 20 metres away from the hitting zone
- 4 batting tees are set up in a line with a ball on each, forming the batting zone, with a cone
on either end
- One team is the batting team and one is the fielding team, positioned between the goals and
hitting zone
- One person from the batting team hits each ball of the
batting tees, one after another, aiming for the goals. If
ball goes through the goals, the batter gets 4 runs
- While this occurs, the fielders are to remain stationary
until all balls have been hit
- The batter is to run between the cones until the fielders
return all balls back onto the tees
- After all batters have had a bat, their total number of runs
is tallied and roles are switched to have the fielders
becoming batters and batters becoming fielders
- Total runs are tallied to determine the winning team.
Stage 2/3
Progression
- Manipulate size of playing area
- Decrease size of goals
- Have groups of 4-6 and play as individual, tallying individual runs
KTP
- Step, stop, swing batting technique
- High elbow
- Direct shot towards cones
- Present bat with flat face

Continuous Cricket
- The students are organised into 2 even teams (max 8 players) – depending on the number in
the class, there may have to be 4-8 to create separate games
- One team is the batting team and one team is the fielding team
- The ball is bowled to the batter, who hits the ball into the field of play and runs around one
of the markers (A or B)
- The fielders must return the ball to the bowler who can bowl the ball at anytime
- Batters can be caught out or bowled out by the ball
hitting the stumps
- Batters can be retired if they reach a certain amount of
runs
- Fielders rotate through positions
- Once all batters have had a turn, teams switch and runs
are tallied to determine which team makes the most at
the end of the game
Stage 4
Progression
- Only allow throwing with non-dominant hand
- Increase distance from stumps to the bowler
- Implement double score zone
- Increase/decrease distance for batters to run
KTP
- Step, stop, swing technique
- Placement of shot into space; away from fielders
- Decision making
- Fast and effective movement between cones
