Phil Young
BUILDER: Phil Young is celebrating a
very special anniversary today – it is exactly one
year since he was operated on at St
Bartholomew’s hospital and given a new heart.
Mr. Young, 47, of Tottenham, is now so
full of energy that he is training to play in a charity
football match to raise money for the hospital’s
transplant program. So far eleven people have
been given new hearts.
Mr. Young wants to help others like
himself. In 1990 he was seriously ill with heart
disease. He couldn’t work, he couldn’t climb the
stairs, and he had two young sons to look after.
Now the boys are helping to train their
father for the ball match. “My boss is very pleased
that I am so fit again,” said Mr. Young. “I have
become a real father to them again. We don’t just
play football – we go jogging and swimming and
play snooker together. I hope more people will
help by the hospital, as I was.

NORWAY : The world’s oceans are greater threat than

previously believed from a “deadly trio” of global warming,
declining oxygen levels and acidification, an international
study said on Thursday.
The oceans have continued to warm, pushing many
commercial fish stocks towards the poles and raising the risk
of the extinction for some marine species, sedpite a slower
pace of temperature rises in the atmosphere this century, it
said. “Risks to the ocean and the ecosystems it supports have
been significantly underestimated. ”according to the
International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO), a
non-governmental group of leading scientists.
“The scale and rate of the present day carbon perturbation and
resulting ocean acidification, is unprecedented in Eath’s
known history,”according to the report, made with the
International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The oceans are warming because of the heat from a build-up
of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Fertilizers and sweage
that wash into the oceans can cause blooms of algae that reduce
oxygen levels in the waters. And carbon dioxide in the air can
form a weak acid when it reacts with sea water.
