Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students of all languages, including ESL students will be able to partake in this mobile application this is
because notes and chords are the same for all languages and dialects. In fact, language is not a requirement
when remembering and understanding musical notes and pitch. While there are familiar songs, such as
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star that support the app, the basis of the technology is to maintain rhythm and stay on
the beat. Headphones may be implemented to students to prevent disturbing their peers. Because this is an
offline app, students will be able to access this software from anywhere at any time with the use of a mobile
device. To further deepen their understanding of the content and challenge themselves, students can move
through three levels in each mini-game.

Instructional Software
In this lesson students will complete the musical standard, ESGMK.CR.2 Compose and arrange music
within specified guidelines. The teacher will lead the lesson with an extremely familiar song, Twinkle Twinkle
Little Star, she will hum it. She will then ask if anyone knows what that song is. If the students guess it right,
then she will begin a discussion on how different notes make different sounds or pitches. After the brief
discussion, the teacher will have the students break off individually and explore the Musical Me – by Duck
Duck Moose app. After an individual exploration of the app, the teacher will bring everyone back together and
show them the complexity of the mini-game that institutes the moving of musical notes to create a unique
song. The students will then take five minutes to compose their piece and then each student will take turns in
playing their composition. Once everyone has taken a turn, the teacher will ask the students if any of the
compositions sound similar to each other. If they believe so, the teacher will allow the students to choose
groups of four or five to create their final masterpiece. After ten minutes of positioning their individual pieces
into their desired track, the teacher will have each group play their songs.
To make sure the group’s final compositions are saved as one song and not four or five individual
pieces, the teacher will record the final compositions using a simple recording app like VoiceMemos. After
each group’s composition are recorded, they will be copied onto a CD and played at the end of the day over
the PA system throughout the week. Once each group has had their composition played, on the final day the
teacher will have a local musician come into the classroom and listen to each group’s work, he/she will give
feedback and explain the choices of their musical notes. If desired, each student may receive copies of their
composition to take home to their families.

Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activity I created could impact each student’s learning by
earning respect for music and musicians out in the real world. The students will understand how much effort
is put into a single song they might hear on the radio. To further extend the lesson, I could have the students
listen to their favorite song from the radio and ask them to try and create an original tune with their Musical
Me app. Some technology tools that could further enhance this project would be bringing in real instruments
and challenging the students to play their group compositions to the best of their ability. To enhance my
lesson idea to a LoTi level 5 and even further to a LoTi level 6, I will upload the compositions to our classroom
blog, and bring in a local music composer to listen to the student’s compositions and give advice on music
composing in the professional industry.
