Self Confidence Annotated Bibliography

Bhandarkar, Sumitha. "6 Simple Personal Commitments to Overcome Low Self-Esteem." Tiny

Buddha, tinybuddha.com/blog/6-simple-personal-commitments-to-overcome-low-self-

esteem/. Accessed 6 Feb. 2019. In this article, Hoeksema explored the differences

between men and women's self-esteems, and comes to the conclusion that overall, there

are little to no differences between the genders. After compiling many scientific

researches, she not only supports her thesis that gender is not correlated to self-esteem.

Hoeksema discredits many false beliefs about women and their self-esteem and proves

that mostly, men and women's self-esteems are the same. She discusses that depending on

what type of self-esteem you are measuring, and the age, and the community of the

subjects, results may differ between a higher self-esteem from either men or women, but

when the research is widespread and the data is averaged among many different

experiments, the overall outcome was that men and women's self-esteems are generally

the same. This article revealed that since both genders are around the same level of self-

esteem, it is important to record not only women for my project, but also men, because

since my project is about helping people raise their self-esteem, it is necessary to record

both genders, because both suffer equally from low self-esteem.

DiMaria, Lauren. "Are Low Self-Esteem and Depression the Same Thing?" Very Well Mind, 16

Jan. 2019, www.verywellmind.com/are-low-self-esteem-and-depression-the-same-thing-

1066623. Accessed 6 Feb. 2019. In this article, Bhandarkar explores ways to improve

self-esteem. Bhandarkar provides advice to higher self-esteem through learning what

worked from personal experiences. She assembles six main points that she saw made a

major improvement in her self-esteem throughout the duration of a few years. In the

article, she explains that she began testing a theory to create a better self-esteem, and

found six areas of improvement that helped her boost her self-esteem. The points consist

of thinking about and putting oneself first and learning how to say no, learning how to

help others, and learning how to be confident and final in oneself's decisions. This article

is critical to my capstone because not only do I want to boost the subject's self-esteem for

only the moment, but I want to give them the tools to give themselves a better self-esteem

long term, so this article helps me to know how to help them, and to know effective and

healthy advice that has worked for others.

explains what depression is an how it effects teens. The definition of depression, causes,

symptoms, and treatment options are used to help discuss how depression in teens differs,

and how it effects them. The articles goes into the medical definitions of depression and

what the causes and symptoms of depression are, as well as defining some treatment

options. It is also discussed that depression in teens is quite different than in adults, like

having extremely low self-esteems and hostility, and possible ways to help prevent or

alleviate some symptoms of depression in teens. This is important for my capstone

because no only does it help me decipher the difference between low self esteem and

depression, it also gives me the tools to better help my peers who seem to be struggling

with depression.

Nolen-Hoeksema, Susan. "The Truth about Women and Self-Esteem." Psychology Today, 21

Jan. 2010, www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-power-women/201001/the-truth-

about-women-and-self-esteem. Accessed 6 Feb. 2019. In this article, DiMaria explores

the question of whether or not depression and self-esteem are the same things. She

creates lists of the similarities and differences between the two, and their correlation, to

prove that that are not the same thing, but often linked. According to the article, the main

difference between the two is that while self-esteem seems to be a constant and

unchanging variable throughout ones life, depression is constantly changing and

extremely unreliable and fluctuating in ones life. In the article also it explains that low

self-esteem is often a risk factor to becoming depressed or having depressive episodes. It

is important for my project to be able to distinguish the difference between low self-

esteem and depression, because if I can determine the difference, I can better help to find

solutions for the people I am recording.

prevention is discussed in terms of the education system. Self-esteem in the education

system is discussed by defining what it is, how it affects school children, and what

educators can do to help prevent it. In the article it discussed how big of an impact low

self-esteem has on children. It also stresses the importance that being there for the child

and knowing the correct way to handle a situation where it is either noticed or brought to

a teacher or school official that a child is suffering with low self-esteem, that something

is done to either fix or at least to help alleviate their low self-esteem. This helps me

because in my capstone, there will be many signs that the subjects are suffering from low

self-esteem, and it is important for me to know what it is, the signs, and the proper ways

to deal with someone that I believe is struggling from a low self-esteem.
