METHODOLOGY BY DR. M. CHIDAMBARAM FORMER
DIRECTOR, NITT ON 05/02/2019

SKILLS FOR EFFECTIVE RESEARCH:

 Master the basics in your area.

 Reading skills (Reading the paper several times will make us understand the paper).
 Problem solving skills (We acquire by taking courses, attending conferences, Peer
discussion).
 Writing skills.

GAINS THROUGH RESEARCH:

 Challenge to mind and calls for logical thinking.

 Skills gained through research experience will remain with us for lifetime.

THINGS TO FOLLOW FOR A EFFECTIVE RESEARCH:

Finding a seat close to or in the lab.

Make sure you are in lab most of time.
Make a habit of going to library & refer to new arrival of journal/library.
Meet your research guide periodically for discussion regarding your work.
Make a good record of work done periodically and asses the progress yourself.
It is advisable to prepare a manuscript on the piece of work completed & communicate it
to journals/conferences for probable publication.
Attempt self study to understand advanced mathematical techniques.

WHY WE SHOULD PUBLISH?

 Your work may be helpful for some other researcher.

 To allow your peer group to criticize your research.
 To use as a basis for future research.
 To gain recognition in a particular area.
 To have own sense of achievement.
 To enhance promotion prospects.

NOTE: Journals appropriate for rigour mathematics (or) experimental work should be properly
classified and make the right choice.

BE AWARE

 Very few manuscripts are accepted without revision.

 Second and third reviews are common.
 Rejection & revision are integral in peer review process.
 Peer review is a positive process.
HOW TO FIND A GOOD PROBLEM:

 Reading research papers and attending seminars will help in finding good research
problems.
 Read a lot & listen to others.
 Have an attack on the problem.
 The ability to attack the problem depends on skills, tools and knowledge.
 Ask good questions What happens?, Why?, Is it true that?. These questions will help you
find good research problem.
 Be aware of research density.
 Seek simplicity in techniques.
 Expose and challenge the hidden assumptions.
 Investigate anomalies. Discoveries often live in anomalies.
 Search for real problems to do a effective research work.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A RESEARCH SCHOLAR:

o Passion for learning and research.

o To give respect for academic colleagues.
o To have network of valuable contacts.
o Having a deep understanding of academic integrity & other professional standards.
o Positive feeling towards supervisor, program & institution.
