VIBXPERT can carry out measurements in two operating modes.

Multimode:
Measurement of characteristic overall values or signals for the
diagnosis of machine conditions. The results can be saved and
read in for evaluation and archiving by the OMNITREND PC
software.
Route (see chapter 4):
Collection of measurement tasks which are to be processed at
regular intervals. A route is created using the OMNITREND PC
software and is used for monitoring machine conditions.

Optionally VIBXPERT can be used for dynamic balancing* in one or

Preparation
The following points should be noted before beginning a measure-
ment:
- The battery must be fully charged
- The required sensors and cables must be laid out and in good
condition; the RPM sensor requires a support to perform RPM
measurements!
- Visually inspect fixed measurement locations and, if necessary,
clean them and repair any damage.
- Prepare recesses for hand-held probes (e.g. TIPTECTOR).

Continue a trend measurement

The standard procedure for monitoring machine conditions is the
regular recording of characteristic overall values over a longer period
of time. The trend of the machine condition can be traced back from
the resulting trend curve and its probable development in the future
can be predicted.
To obtain a meaningful trend measurement, measurements must be
carried out under always reproducible conditions - i.e. operation,
measurement location and sensors must be comparable.

• Highlight the type of measurement in the selection screen under

which the trend measurement was performed.
• Press the MENU key and click on 'Load File'.
The file manager only displays the measurements of the current
measurement type.
• Click on the file that was saved as a trend measurement.
• To start the measurement, either press the joystick or press the
MENU key and click on 'Measure'.
• After the measurement press the MENU button and click on 'Save'.
• In the following prompt, click on 'Append' to add the current result
to the saved data record.

Evaluating results
Before a result is evaluated, make sure that the measurement is valid
and no error message is present (see page 2-2).

Characteristic overall value

Up to two characteristic values are simultaneously displayed in the
result screen. If the limit values are exceeded during the measure-
ment, these appear in the field below the respective measurement
value (see below). Also, the respective LED lights up next to the
display (see pages 2-2).
Limits can be displayed as an absolute value or as a difference to the
measurement value. For vibration parameters with three characteri-
stic values (rms, 0-p, p-p), move the joystick upwards or downwards
to display the third value (see 'Display Setup', page 3-7).

Characteristic values - Trend measurement

If more than two measurements are saved in a file, the results for
each characteristic overall value are displayed as a trend curve (for
details, see page 3-6).
Each measurement on the trend curve is labeled with a marker and
can be reached with the joystick (left - right). The relevant measure-
ment values appear under the diagram together with the recording
date and event and comment entries.
With the aid of the displayed threshold line (see Display Setup, P. 3-
15), it is possible to determine if thresholds have been exceeded. If
more than one overall value appears in the diagram, only the
threshold for the highlighted characteristic value is displayed. Move
the joystick up/down to mark the other overall values and display the
respective threshold values. The LEDs are not used here for threshold
assessment, they merely illuminate on the measurement screen.

Multimode - Special Features

Special features of individual measurement types

In addition to the described measurement procedure, the following
section describes the background information for specific measure-
ment types and which aspects should be noted during measurement.

Phase measurement
The phase measurement is used to identify machine faults that cause
lines at the same position in the spectrum (e.g. static/ dynamic
unbalance). To do so, the amplitude and the phase angle of the 1 channel 2 channels
vibration pointer is determined from the RPM-synchronous compo- (Registration required)
nents of the vibration signal.
In order to identify the fault more easily, the individual orders are
filtered out and displayed. For example, an unbalance causes severe
vibrations in the first order whereas alignment faults dominate in the
second order. Phase measurement can be performed in one or in two
planes.

Application of phase measurement in 2 planes: Determination of

the phase difference in both planes. This indicates whether, e. g.
static, dynamic or coupled unbalance is present.
F
Note

For measurement in 2 planes, the '2-channel measurement' version

(see P. 2-16) must be registered in VIBXPERT.

Orbit
The orbit of a shaft is recorded with a 2-channel measurement where
the two sensors are arranged at an angle of 90°. This enables
identification of machine faults and damage to the shaft that become Orbit, 2 channels
apparent in the vibration behavior of the shaft and directly affect the (Registration required)
path of the shaft (e.g. unbalance, misalignment, shaft crack, rotation
fault (for more details, see VDI 3839 Sheets 1 and 2)).

F
For this type of measurement, the '2-channel measurement' version
must be registered in VIBXPERT (see P. 2-16).
Note
A typical measurement installation is shown in the following figure:
- The two vibration transducers are mounted in a single measure-
ment plane at a angular displacement of 90° on the machine.
- The transducer on channel A defines the X direction and the 0°
position.
- The trigger is mounted in the 0° position.

Shock pulse measurement

Shock pulse signal levels are indicated as a combination of 'Carpet
value' (background level, indicative of lubrication condition) and
'Maximum value' (transient peak level, indicative of damage), both
expressed in logarithmic [dB] terms. Bearing condition is determined
by comparing normalized signal levels and their difference with
reference values.
These characteristic overall values are typically affected by various
external factors (e.g. rolling velocity, i.e. bearing size and rpm, signal
damping, lubrication). To evaluate the condition of the bearing
objectively and to allow comparison between values measured on
different bearings requires either a comparison measurement in the
good condition or a normalization of the measured values. The procedures used for bearing
diagnosis (shock pulse, envelope curve,
vibration acceleration) comply with the
Normalization ISO norm, 10816-1 (Appendix E3 , E1).
This process considers the following individual factors:
- Bearing size, RPM
These bearing-specific factors are combined in the so-called ‘ initial
value’ or the ‘dBi value’. The dBi value is calculated from the
rotational speed and the bore diameter of the bearing.

- Signal damping, lubrication, load, ...

These unspecific external influencing factors must be determined
empirically within the framework of a ‘normalization adjustment’.
Together with the dBi value, the ‘adjustment value’ obtained in this
way, or even the dBa value, results in the so-called ‘adjusted initial
value’ (dBia value).

Consequently, the normalized shock pulse value (dBn) works out to:

dBn = dBsv + dBi + dBa = dBsv + dBia

Normalization adjustment
Under ideal conditions (dBa=0), the normalized carpet value of a
bearing in good condition equals 5 dBn. The ‘true’ dBa value equals
the difference from the measured value, only with the initial value
(dBi) normalized carpet value.

Example
Normalized measurement on a new bearing: 9 dBn.
The adjustment value is therefore:
9 dBn - 5 dBn = 4 dBa.

Notes about Route mode

1. A route consists of the following 6 hierarchical elements:
Database - OMNITREND database (highest hierarchy)
Location - factory, plant, customer
Train - group of machines, e.g. drive
Machine - individual machines, e.g. motor
Measurement location - position of the measurement location, e.g.
drive side horizontal
Measurement task - e.g. vibration acceleration (lowest hierarchy)
2. Before you start a route, check the current basic settings for the
route mode (see page 2-13f.).
3. The measurement results are saved in a folder which is not
displayed in the File Manager.
4. A completed route can be repeated to check individual measure-
ment tasks for instance.
5. With each route, the following additional information can be
loaded from the OMNITREND database into the data collector:
• Alarm and warning values
• Frequency marks
• Reference value and the last measurement value (only for
characteristic overall values)
6. The route is automatically deleted from the data collector after it
has been loaded onto the PC.

VIBCODE measurement
Measurements taken using the VIBCODE system (page 5-1) are...
• quick, because all measurement settings are preprogrammed by
the PC program OMNITREND and need only be collected at the
press of a key.
• reliable, because measurement locations are automatically re-
cognized from their encoded studs and the proper combination of
measurements is always taken at each location.
• repeatable, because the transducer always contacts the stud in the
exact same optimum orientation and with the same optimum
pressure.

The VIBCODE concept can be shown as follows:

Pool

VIBCODE route
VIBCODE locations at which the condition data of the machines are
to be collected routinely at regular intervals, are collected together to
form a route. These locations can be processed in any order as the
VIBCODE uses an automatic location identification.
VIBCODE Pool
Pool locations can be seen as a set of 'reserve' points that are not part
of the route and are measured only as needed. These locations are
VIBXPERT 08.04

only completed after being ‘called up’, i.e. after the VIBCODE
transducer has been connected, the location identified and the stored
task retrieved. The pool is loaded into the data collector together
with the corresponding route.

Tips on measurement with VIBCODE

- Never use the VIBCODE transducer to take a measurement
directly from the machine surface. This transducer must
always be locked onto the VIBCODE stud! Attention!

- Place the protective cap on the transducer before extended

periods of nonuse.
- The transducer must be kept clean of solvents, grease and oil.
- Maximum bolt temperature for measurement: 70°C / 158°F

Chapter 5: Appendix

This chapter contains a brief description of the VIBCODE vibration

transducer and the trigger sensor as well as technical notes regarding
the use and care of the measurement instrument.

VIBCODE
The VIBCODE measurement system ensures total trending reliabity
by automatically identifying the measurement location.

VIBCODE transducer
The VIBCODE transducer contains a code ring sensor and a combined
vibration/shock pulse sensor for measurement of machine vibration,
bearing condition and cavitation. The transducer locks onto the
VIBCODE stud via bayonet mount in optimum position and with
consistent pressure. Trend readings are taken with perfect repeatabil-
ity regardless of operator qualification and training.
The code ring sensor reads the tooth pattern of the plastic ring in the
measurement stud to determine its location so that the correct types
of measurement can be taken. Mixups, erroneous trend deviations
and time-consuming repeat measurements are all eliminated once
and for all.

Connect VIBCODE to the measurement instrument

Connect the VIBCODE transducer to one of the two measurement
channels (A or B) with the cable for the LineDrive transducer (VIB
5.436 or VIB 5.437-X). Note the setting of the measurement channel
in the respective measurement task.

Mount VIBCODE on the VIBCODE measurement location

Lock the VIBCODE transducer onto the VIBCODE stud by pressing it
into the stud in an upright position from above and rotate it
clockwise. When the transducer is locked in position, release it and
do not pull on the cable. To detach the transducer, rotate it
counterclockwise again.

Unplug VIBCODE after use!

Only leave the VIBCODE transducer attached to the VIBCODE
measurement location for as long as necessary as, otherwise, the
spring tension of the sensor will be too heavily stressed. To avoid
soiling, always replace the respective protective cap on the transduc-
er and on the measurement stud.

Temperature of the VIBCODE stud

Before mounting the VIBCODE transducer on the measurement
location, measure the temperature of the stud with a temperature
probe. VIBCODE studs may not exceed a maximum temperature of
70°C during measurement (if the measurement takes no longer than
five minutes, the temperature may reach a maximum of 80°C).

Safety
• Do not remove the VIBCODE transducer from the VIBCODE
measurement location during measurement.
• Do not unplug the VIBCODE transducer from the measuring
instrument when the VIBCODE code is being read.
• Never measure with the VIBCODE transducer mounted directly on
a machine, but always lock the VIBCODE transducer onto a
VIBCODE measurement location mounted on the machine!

Cleaning instructions
• Slight soiling on the transducer can be washed off using soap
solution or isopropyl and a cotton cloth.
• To prevent damage to the delicate components in the head of
the sensor, use a paintbrush for cleaning them.
• If you use compressed air for cleaning, only use a weak jet of
air.

Sensor head

Never use solvent for cleaning!

Do not scratch off any soiling using
screwdriver blades or other hard
objects !
Attention !
Make sure no oil or grease gets on

Appendix - Trigger sensor

Optical trigger sensor

These trigger sensor emits an electric pulse whenever a reflective
tape (VIB 3.306) on the rotor passes by and reflects the infrared light
(IR) from the IR-LED. VIBXPERT then uses the resulting sequence of
pulses to calculate RPM. The red LED is used to aim at the reflective
tape on the rotor.
For best results, the distance between the sensor and the rotor mark
should be 2 cm to 50 cm / 1" to 20". The sensor should be held such
that the mark passes perpendicularly to the arrow marking on the
trigger housing.
When performing balancing measurements the sensor is mounted
most easily with the VIB 4.330 trigger bracket on the machine.

If the surface is very shiny, do NOT mount the trigger sensor

vertically to the surface. Mount it at an angle of approximately 15°
to the perpendicular.

Technical notes
VIBXPERT is a precision instrument and should be treated as such.

Storage
Use the VIBXPERT carrying pouch (VIB 5.354) for transporting
VIBXPERT and for making on-site measurements. If VIBXPERT is not
used for lengthy periods, stow the measurement instrument in the
pouch and connect it regularly to the mains to avoid the battery from
completely discharging.
Make sure that
- the storage location is dry
- the measurement device is not stored near electronic equipment
which can generate strong electromagnetic fields.
- the measurement instrument is not exposed to temperatures
above 70°C or under -20°C.
- the humidity is not more than 90%.

Cleaning
If lightly soiled, the carrying case and the housing can be wiped with
a damp cloth. In cases of more stubborn soiling, use a household
cleaner.
The display is protected against damage by a scratch-free transparent
film. Use a soft dry cloth to clean the film. If necessary, the protective
film can be ordered from your PRÜFTECHNIK representative.

Never use solvents or other strong cleaning agents

Attention!

Maintenance & Calibration

Various factors such as aging or temperature can cause an offset in
the analog electronics. This offset should be compensated every two
months. Details are given on page 2-17.
To guarantee the high measurement accuracy of the device, VIB-
XPERT requires calibration every two years. The calibration date is
indicated on the colored sticker on the rear of the measurement
instrument. A couple of months before the next calibration a warning
will appear on the display when the instrument is switched on. Send
the device to your PRÜFTECHNIK representative for calibration.

Guarantee
The measurement device has a guarantee period of 1 year. Any
guarantee claims expire if service work is carried out by non-
authorized personnel.

Spare parts, accessories

Only original spare parts and accessories may be used. Information
on these parts is given in the VIBXPERT product catalog (VIB 9.661-
5). The current edition can be downloaded from the PRÜFTECHNIK
hompage (www.pruftechnik.com).

Disposal
Dispose of the battery at the end of its lifetime according to the
applicable environmental regulations.
The battery should be handed in at the local communal disposal
facility in a discharged condition. The battery is discharged when the
charging display is completely white and the message 'Battery empty'
appears on the display.
For safety, cover the metal contacts of the battery with sticky tape.
