Security guidelines for WIFI users
Below are some guidelines that you should follow:
- Users are recommended to immediately create a VPN
connection upon establishing a link to the Internet.
- Do not connect your laptop to a Shell wired connection and
hotspot at the same time. Potentially a hacker can then use
your laptop as a 'bridge' to gain access to Shell systems.
- Always select Infrastructure as your Network Type.
- Always be alert (and cautious) for unexpected things
happening on the laptop when connected via WIFI
- Apply some level of security to your home wireless
configuration as using it out of the box is an invitation to
provide anyone in the neighborhood with free internet access
or worse, to confidential data on your laptop.
- Do not configure your laptop with a profile with no SSID as this
will allow the machine to associate with any hotspot it
discovers.

What is WIFI?
Wireless Fidelity (WIFI) is a technology that allows connectivity to
the Internet at fast speeds without using wires. Advantages of
WIFI include flexible mobility and elimination of unsightly cables.
Disadvantages include the potential for radio interference due to
weather, other wireless devices, or obstructions like walls.

Installing the GID drivers and software script
Pre-requisites:
- Integrated Intelâ PROSet/Wireless Network
Adapter must be physically installed. (If the
picture on the right is present on
your laptop, the adapter is installed.
Steps:
1. After receiving a confirmation that you have been added to SD-
HP - Intel_Murod-9.0-AGS group, restart your machine.

NOTE: If you see an error message Error loading plug-ins.
Application will exit, your installation has failed. Follow the
steps below to rectify the problem:
i. Select Start> Add GI Software> Change or Remove
Programs.
ii. Under the Currently installed programs: section, click on
HP-Intel_Murod_mI_CleanUp-9.0-A > Support
Information. The Support Info window appears.
iii. Click on Repair. Wait for the repair process to be completed
and repeat steps i - iii for HP-Intel_Murod_mH_IWA-9.0-A,
HP-Intel_Murod_mG_IWCA-9.0-A and HP-Intel_Murod_
mF_SSO-9.0-A in sequence.
Internet Connection using WIFI
1. Click on button on your keyboard to activate the
wireless device.
2. Click Start> Programs> Intel PROSet Wireless > Intel
PROSet Wireless.
3. The Intel PROSet/Wireless dialog box will appear. Details
of available wireless network will be displayed under the
Available Networks section. Double-click on the wireless
network name that you would like to connect.
4. The Connect one-time to <Wireless Network Name>? dialog
box will appear. Select Create a profile (plan on
connecting more than once) and click OK.
5. The Configure Wireless Settings - General Settings dialog
box will appear. Key in the Profile Name and click Next.
6. The Configure Wireless Settings - Security Settings dialog
box will appear. Two options may occur:
a. No security is detected, you may proceed to step 7.
OR
b. Security settings is detected, the following options must be
completed:
i. Select Open under the Network Authentication option.
ii. Select WEP under the Data Encryption option.
iii. The Encryption Level should be set at 128 bits .
iv. Enter the Wireless Security Password (Encryption
Key) assigned to you.This password should be
provided to you by the service provider.
v. Proceed to step 7.
7. Click Next.
8. The Configure Wireless Settings - Done dialog box will
appear. Click OK.
Connecting to WIFI on your GI
laptop
Connecting your PC
Steps:
1. Click on button on your laptop to activate the wireless
device.
2. Right-click on the radio icon on the "Windows system
tray".
2. A pop-up menu will appear. Click on Connect to Profile.
3. A profile submenu appears, click on the <Profile name>
that you would like to use.
4. Check the radio icon for indication that a WIFI internet
connection has been established. Guidelines on status
indicated is as below:
- Hardware/software is installed but not enabled
- Hardware searching for any available wireless signal
- Hardware has detected signal
A computer-connected icon will also appear to indicate

5. Once connected, proceed to select Start> Settings>
Network and Dial-up Connections> ShellVPN.
6. If your smart card has not been inserted into the reader, the
Select smartcard dialog box will appear. Insert your smart
card into the reader. Click OK.
7. The Connect Shell VPN dialog box will appear. Key in your
smart card PIN and click OK.
8. Upon successful connection to the Shell network, a second
connected-computer icon will appear in the Windows
system tray.
Disconnecting your PC
Steps:
1. Close all your applications.
2. Right-click on the second connected-computer icon on
the Windows system tray and select Disconnect.
Known issues
You can access the internet. But all attempts to establish a VPN
session failed. This may be due to one of the following reasons:
a. Your wireless service provider does not allow VPN
connections to be established over their network.
- Symptoms: The system always stop at the Opening port
prompt (see Illustration 1).
