TITLE: Normal or Standard Consistency Test of Cement

AIM: To determine the quantity of water to be mixed to obtain a cement paste of normal
consistency.

THEORY: The water content of a cement paste effects the time of set of the cement. This
amount of water is controlled by bringing the cement paste to a standard condition of wetness
known as standard consistency which is defined by, the condition or percentage of water by
weight of cement for which the standard weighted needle (plunger) of 10mm diameter
penetrates up to a depth of 5mm to 7mm above the bottom of Vicat’s mould. Percentage of
water in the cement paste (P) for standard consistency varies from cement to cement and
from batch to batch. Therefore it is recommended that this quantity be taken as under for
various tests. 0.85P expressed as % weight of cement for setting time tests. 0.78P expressed
as % weight of cement for soundness of cement tests (Le Chatelier Method) P/4+3.0
expressed as % weight of dry cement and aggregate for compressive strength test for 1:3
mortar. If ‘C’ is the weight of cement taken, ‘W’ is the weight of water for desired
penetration then % of water for normal consistency is given by,

P = (W/C)*100

PROCEDURE:

1. Take 400gm of cement and place it in enameled tray.

2.Mix about 25% water by weight of dry cement thoroughly to get the cement paste (total
time taken to obtain thoroughly mixed water cement paste ‘GAUGING TIME’ should not be
more than 3-5 min).

3. Immediately fill the paste in Vicat’s mould resting on the glass plate and bring the paste
level with the top of the mould.

4. Place the mould along the glass plate under the rod fitted with the plunger.
5. Adjust the indicator to 0.0 when the plunger is touching the cement paste surface in the
mould.
6. Release the plunger quickly and allow it to sink in the paste.

7. Note the resistance of the paste for penetration of the plunger from the bottom of the
mould. (25% moulds).

8. Prepare cement paste with varying % of water (25% onwards) and test these as described
above till the resistance to penetration is 5mm to 7mm from the bottom of mould.

9. Express the amount of water, which gives 5mm to 7mm resistance from the bottom of the
mould as % by weight of dry cement.
