Lesson Idea Name: Where am I?

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 5th grade

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE5.G.1
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection
of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by
using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to
travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the
direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates
correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: BrainPop.com

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

For the ESL students in my class I can use the videos in the ESL library to help support the students as they
learn more English by putting the videos in their native language. This feature can also support their parents
while helping their children at home by viewing the videos and also help them learn English as well. For any of
my students they can use headphones at home if they are blind or if they don’t want to disturb their family

around them. Any of my students can rewind the video if they didn’t catch some important information, forgot
what the video said or just wanting to make sure they understand the content.

Lesson idea implementation:

The BrainPop video will be used to introduce coordinate planes. The teacher will lead a discussion on the
components of a coordinate plane (x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate). After watching the video,
students will divide into groups (depending on class size). Using the components of the video and how to plot
points on a coordinate plan grid (map) and create a “Where am I?” map. The groups will have to come up with
5 places they want to include on their maps. Along with each group coming up with 5 places they need to
include a key that has the coordinates of the 5 places and a dot on their map to show where it is with a label.
Each group will design a map on how to locate things on a map using coordinates by using the x and y axis by
using Coordinate Geometry app to make their map come to like on the iPad.
A rubric will be used to support the students as they create their maps. When each group is done with their
maps, they can hang it in the hallways around the school so other children in different grades can view them.
Once each group is done hanging their maps up the class will walk with their teacher to look at each groups
work. After each child gets done looking at the maps around the school, they will need to write a reflection in
their math journals on why making these maps are important in daily life. Feedback will be provided to each
student after the teacher reads each child’s journal. This lesson will take a maximum of 2 hours during the
math block.
The activity “Where am I?” can impact student learning because it shows them that what they are learning
in school is actually is used in a real-life situation and it is not pointless to learn. To extend this project the
teacher could use each groups map and post it in the weekly newsletter. By showing the maps in the
newsletter it shows the parents what their child is learning in school and how it is relevant to real life
situations. A technology tool that the students can use in this assignment is by using Microsoft Excel/ Microsoft
Word and Coordinate Geometry App to create their maps instead of using graph paper and a pencil.

Reflective Practice:
To further extend the “Where Am I” project I would publish the maps that the students made on the iPads
on the Coordinate Geometry App on to the classroom website. I would also post the maps on the school’s
newsletter so that each child, teacher and parent in the school can read and learn about the coordinate planes
and how to make maps based of the iPad app.
