Apprenticeship Primer

AY 2017-2018
Hello, batchmates!
Since we are now on the Second Semester of our
Second Year as law students, it will soon be time for us to
apply in our dream law firms, government offices, or non-
governmental organizations.
As you very well know by now, Legal Apprenticeship
is part of the DLSU curriculum and for at least 120 hours,
we are required to apply everything we have learned
within the four corners of our classrooms and experience
first-hand the rigors of law practice. Not only is this a
requirement for us to finish our law schooling, but is also a
great opportunity for us to test the waters and find out
what type of practice we really are interested in.
I have prepared this Internship Primer to hopefully
serve as our guide when we apply for our apprenticeships.
Included herein are the following:
a. Contact list of law firms, government offices, and
NGOs
b. DLSU apprenticeship requirements
c. Tips and feedback from our upperclassmen
This primer is by no means fail proof, and must only
serve as your guide.
Happy apprenticeship!!!

How to Apprentice
1. Identify and apply with the placement organization of
your choice.

Where we will apprentice is primarily a matter of

each student’s choice, depending on their
individual interests and career goals, but subject
to COL approval.

The basic requirements are:

a. Resume/Curriculum Vitae
b. Cover Letter/Letter of Intent
c. Screenshot of grades/Transcript of Records
d. Grade conversion table

2. Get the College of Law’s approval of the placement.

Make an endorsement letter adressed to your

placement of choice, with Atty. Domingo
Añonuevo as signatory.

Placement will be approved given the following:

a. The work must be supervised by a practicing

attorney or judge, or a non-lawyer senior
NGO officer, who must agree to be the
student’s apprenticeship supervisor.
b. The supervisor must commit to assign
concrete work to the student, providing the
student with substantial feedback on work
quality and progress. The supervisor must
have the time to serve as a mentor.
c. The work preferably should be legal in
nature and have a substantial writing
component.
d. The placement organization must provide
the student with work of at least 60 hours.
e. The placement organization must not
provide monetary compensation to the
student. It may however grant allowances for
reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.

3. Have the Apprenticeship Memorandum of Agreement

signed by all parties.

4. The supervising attorney must agree and comply with

the statement of objectives.

5. Enjoy and make the most out of your apprenticeship

experience!

6. At the end of your apprenticeship submit the following

requirements:

a. Apprenticeship MOA
b. Time Log
c. Supervising Attorney’s Report
d. Student Apprenticeship Report
e. Sample work

General Interview Tips
1. Look the part! Show them that you belong to their firm
or organization. It really helps, and it also builds your
confidence during the interview.
2. Research about their legal work beforehand. They
might quiz you on it, if not, it helps you bola haha
3. It’s normal to be nervous but try not to let your nerves
take over. Mind over matter!
4. Talk clearly and precisely. As we may have
experienced in class, most legal professionals are
very particular with the words we use. Don’t rush, sabi
nga nila “think before answering”
5. Listen to the question, and then respond. Another
thing we hear from professors is that we should be
responsive to the question.
6. NEVER BE LATE. Being late may come across as a
turn off for the firm/office/organization. As the saying
goes, “first impressions last”.

Below are the placements where our upperclassmen have

articles for the website.
Feedback of Upperclassmen:
• Ups - Lawyers are extremely friendly, and willing to mentor
and answer any queries; Treat their interns more like friends
and colleagues than subordinates or lackeys.
Downs - Lack of allowance or any sort of compensation;
wasn't able to attend hearings since none of the cases I was
assigned had any scheduled during my time there.

Feedback of Upperclassmen
• You’re assigned work one after the other. The firms are strict
with deadlines. But since I was interested in the work
assigned, it never felt like a chore for me.
• Workload depends on the number of persons in your batch.
A usual batch is composed 6 to 8 interns. We were only 4 in
our batch, and that made our workload extra heavier.
• Prestige of law firms is top notch. Also, the experience I got
was invaluable in helping me decide what kind of practice I
want to get into.

Sentro ng Alternatibong Lingap Panligal

Mode of Application:
• E-mail
Response Period:
• Around a month
Interview:
• None at the time
Interview Tips: N/A
Workload:
• Heavy. Basically, legal NGO work.
Feedback of Upperclassmen:
• It would depend on the unit you’re assigned to. For me, it
was heavy on the policy and legal research, even going so
far as to visit government institutions to get resources that
were not available online. I also was given an opportunity to
give a talk on children’s’ rights to saligan’s youth paralegals.
For my other co-intern, she was assigned to the labor unit,
which had a pending case then, so her work was mostly
drafting and filing petitions and going to labor institutions for
mediation proceedings. We weren’t restricted to our units
though, and whenever there was a major event or learning
experience for any unit, we were encouraged to participate.
Also, there was a lot of travel opportunities involved, since
saligan has branches throughout the country and project
partners outside metro manila.
• Well-rounded experience with a lot of travel opportunities.
You might also get to know wonderful para-sa-bayan minded
legal professionals and notable saligan alumni, like Rep.
Kaka Bag-ao and VP Leni Robredo. If this is the kind of
career you see yourself engaging in the future, you have to
try it. :)
Allowance: None but major expenses during travel will often be
covered.

Workload:
• Average to heavy. Mostly research work, court appearances

• Generally, the work depends on your supervising lawyer.
He/she will be assigned to you depending which department
you're most interested in. Mine was lit and my supervising
lawyer asked me to do a lot of work compared to my co-
interns so mine was average-heavy. Other lawyers also
gave us work. I was there for 240 hrs so a lot of the lawyers
knew about me na so they always called me up for work
haha. Even the partners assigned work to the interns as a
group pala which was heavy. Despite the work load, the
lawyers there are very friendly! We always went out to drink!
