1) Calculate the mode and median from the tabulated angle data set.

If the data set is sufficiently

large and if the sampling data is good then both mode and median value should be more or less
same.In the sample data set given to me. The mode and median value is 275 and 276 respectively.
This can be confirmed visually from the plot given below in Figure (1)

Figure 1) The polar coordinate plot of the time versus angle.

2) Once the Speaker’s mode/median value is identified from step (1). We can negate the noise in the
data set. In the present case since the median value is 275. We will only consider the angles in third
and fourth quardents in the data set. Say for some other case if the value is 15 then, only first and
fourth quardant data will be considered.

3) Next is to find the range of angles the speaker spend most of the time around that median.
From 180 to 360 bucket the number of points in an array with say one degree difference
180 181 182 .. .. 275 360
0 1 3 25 5

180 275 360

4) If we plot the table in step 3 the graph will look like the one in the above figure. One need to
identify the kink in the above graph around the median. Numerically it can be achieved by
caculating the slope between the consecutive points. Around the kink the slope will increase
suddenly.
