RECOMMENDATIONOF SOIL BEARING CAPACITY FOR RAFT FOUNDATION

TO BE ADOPTED FOR NSB

Pl refer page No 18 and clause no 6 (iii) of the soil investigation for the above work
for recommending 35 t/sqm at 8m depth for raft foundation

Also refer the last paragraph of the page wherein it is mentioned that “The general
recommendation is not structure specific unavailability of the total load of the
structure and the designer therefore at liberty to decide the depth and other
parameters and the type of foundation intended basing on the sub soil
characteristics made available in this report”

Now the depth of foundation is adopted as 9.3m minimum instead of 8m and type of
foundation adopted is raft foundation.

Hence a review is done for thorough verification of the soil report to check the
soil/rock stratification at required depth foundation ie at 9.3m depth with respect to
the calculated shear/strength/settlement values based on the sub soil
characteristics made available in the report ( please refer Annexure A ) along with
this report and recommendations are as follows

1) The recommended value of 35 t/sqm for safe bearing capacity for raft
foundation at 8m depth has no relevance with the calculations and soil/strata
contained in the soil report. Hence this value may be ignored.

2) The entire foundation is resting on rock except near borehole 1 and 2.Rock is
available at 10.60m and 12.1 at bore holes 1 and 2 respectively

3) As seen from the Annexure, the least NSBC is available at bore hole no 5
which is 169 tons/sqm at 9.3m resting on fairly good rock . Hence adopting
NSBC of 100 t/sqm is a conservative value which can be safely taken into
consideration by the structural engineer while designing the raft foundation

4) The sand strata which is available is a small pocket around bore hole 1 and 2
under proposed raft may removed completely during execution and filled
with M10 concrete to take care of differential settlement and tie beams can be
provided to take care of differential settlement as recommend in the soil report
and as suggested by the structural designer to take of earth quake loads.

5) As seen from the soil report , water is available in bore hole 1 and 2 for a
depth of 4.5m to 6.0m which are having permeable strata , but surprisingly
there the no water available in the adjacent boreholes no 4 &6 in spite
having similar permeable strata

6) After though investigation in the site, it is found that the site is having a pocket
of soil water bearing strata due to water permeating from the over flow of
septic tanks and kitchen of a canteen located near these boreholes. Hence,
safely ,it is concluded that the water found in the boreholes is not due to
presence of underground water table, but due to subsurface water
permeating from the nearby utilities available into permeable stratum in the
site

7) Hence presence of underground water table can be ignored and proceed with
the design without accounting for uplift by ground water table.

8) As the foundations are resting on rock with no underground water table,

providing soil anchors will not arise
