Voice of the people
Tanning legislation deserves
consideration
This year, hundreds of Missis-
sippians will be diagnosed with
melanoma, the deadliest form of skin
cancer. For some of these patients
their cancer could likely have been
prevented by avoiding tanning
devices.
Tanning devices have been scien-

risk for melanoma. In fact, those
who use the devices before age 35
are 59 percent more likely to get the
disease, and risks are even higher
for those who use tanning devices
before age 25.
The risk associated with UV
exposure is cumulative, which is why
legislation introduced in the Missis-
sippi Legislature prohibiting the use
of indoor tanning devices for those
under 18 is so important.
Most teens are considering peer
pressure and prom, not melanoma

men’s basketball team keeps digging a hole and
finding a way to pull itself out.
South Carolina won its fifth Southeastern
Conference game after trailing by double digits,
beating Ole Miss 79-64 on Tuesday night.
The Gamecocks seem like they have been in
a hole all year. South Carolina started the season
5-8 in non-conference, including losses to Stony
Brook and 6-19 Wyoming. They have been down
by at least 10 in nine of their 13 SEC games. And
now they are fourth in a league with three teams
in the top 13.
“They are taking me on an unbelievable ride,”
South Carolina coach Frank Martin said.
