Assignment (1) Semester: Spring
“Eccentric loading”

1. The member having a rectangular cross section seen in Fig.1.a. is designed to resist a
moment of 40 N.m. in order to increase its strength and rigidity, it is proposed that two
small ribs be added to its bottom as seen in Fig.1.b. Determine the maximum stress in
the member for both cases.

2. A beam constructed from 51 mm by 204 mm boards has the cross section shown in the
figure. If the max. bending moment acting in the beam is M=22KN.m, determine the
max. bending stress in board A and board B.

3. Knowing that the magnitude of the vertical force P is 2 KN, Determine the stress at
point A and point B.

“Eccentric loading”

4. The circular tube with the cross section shown is subjected to the axial force P and
bending moment M, both directed as shown. Using the readings from the strain gauges
at a and b, the stresses at these locations are calculated to be σa = 19.3 MPa and σb = 104
MPa. Compute P and M.

5. To reduce interference, a link in a machine is designed so that its cross-sectional area in

the center section is reduced by one-half, as seen in the Fig. The thickness of the link is
50mm and P=40KN, (1) Determine the max and min values of the normal stress acting
on sec m-n, and (2) Sketch the stress distribution on sec m-n.

6. The vertical portion of the press shown consists of a rectangular tube of wall thickness
t = 8 mm. Knowing that the press has been tightened on wooden planks being glued
together until P = 20 KN. Determine the stress at Point A and point B.

7. Knowing that the clamp shown has been tightened on wooden planks being glued
together until P = 400N. Determine in sec a-a (a) the stress at point A, (b) the stress at
point B and (c) the location of the neutral axis.
