Organic Food, Recipe and

Labels Lesson
Grade Level: 1st grade
Standards:
Education & the Environment Initiative Curriculum
Principle I
The continuation and health of individual human lives and of human communities and societies
depend on the health of the natural systems that provide essential goods and ecosystem
services. As a basis for understanding this principle:

A. Students need to know that the goods produced by natural systems are essential to human
life and to the functioning of our economies and cultures.
Students need to know that the ecosystem services provided by natural systems are essential
to human life and to the functioning of our economies and cultures.

Principle II
The long-term functioning and health of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems
are influenced by their relationships with human societies. As a basis for understanding this
principle:

A. Students need to know that direct and indirect changes to natural systems due to the growth
of human populations and their consumption rates influence the geographic extent,
composition, biological diversity, and viability of natural systems.

Life Sciences
2. Plants and animals meet their needs in different ways. As a basis for
understanding this concept:
Students know roots are associated with the intake of water and soil nutrients and green
leaves are associated with making food from sunlight.

Language Arts:
2.0 Reading Comprehension
Comprehension and Analysis of Grade-Level-Appropriate Text
2.2 Respond to who, what, when, where, and how questions.
2.3 Follow one-step written instructions.
2.4 Use context to resolve ambiguities about word and sentence meanings.
2.6 Relate prior knowledge to textual information. 2.7 Retell the central ideas of
simple expository or narrative passages.

Materials:
1. Organic Farm Versus Conventional Farm power point
2. Organic Farm versus Conventional Farm poster board
3. Organic Vegetables, fruits and Cereals to serve as a museum
4. Organic Food Homework assignment
5. Scavenger Hunt graphic organizer
6. Organic food Recipe Graphic Organizer

Objectives:
Students will know what and organic farm is; students will teach their
parents and will complete the questions.
Students will know how to prepare an organic produce recipe,
students will complete the recipe page and present to the class.

Management Plan:
Students will begin the lesson whole group on the carpet with the
Organic vs. Conventional Farm Poster Board. “What is this poster trying
to tell us?” “What types of things do you see on here?”

Students will read about conventional farms on the poster board. “Turn
to your neighbor and share with your neighbor what you think about
conventional farms?”
Students and teacher read about organic farms, students are given
various opportunities to compare and contrast the two types of farms.
OPTION: Complete a compare and contrast chart with students CHECK
FOR UNDERSTANDING.

Students move to their seats and watch the organic food vs.
conventional farm power point. The same material as the poster board
is presented in the power point enabling students to make
connections. CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: “If you were shopping
with your family which farm would you visit, and give three
explanations why?”Let students put their heads together to partner
share before you call out.

Scavenger Hunt:
Set: Organic Fruits and vegetables and cereals and body products are
all over the classroom, spread out so that traffic does not become an
issue.
Students get with their partner and find the “Organic Food” labels
In partners the students walk around the classroom finding the
“Organic” labels in each product. EXTENSION: Have the students take
notes on where the labels are in each product, check off the product
on a list, or compare organic to non organic products.

Instruction:

Guided Practice
Discussion Based in Organic versus non organic Poster board, guiding
the students through thoughtful inquiry based conversation. Students
will engage in visual presentations of organic farms from the power
point.

Students will learn about key features and attributes of organic


farming, the benefits of organic farming on their health and the health
of the planet.

Independent Practice:
Students will complete the graphic organizer on comparing and
contrasting the two types of farms. Students will complete a
homework assignment: “I am going to teach you everything that I have
learned about organic farming” Parents will need to write everything
that their child taught them about organic vs. conventional farms.

Students will pick one type of organic farm product, and create a
recipe to share with the class. They will create an organic food recipe
and present to the class and do a demonstration of how to prepare the
dish. The recipe will be part of a Whole Food Organic Recipe book.

Conclusion:
Each student will receive a copy of the organic food recipe cookbook
to enjoy with their families. Students will have the opportunity to
present a favorite “How to” recipe to the classroom.

Differentiation:
As a result of viewing the hand written paragraphs completed by the
students parents, extension lesson can be implemented.

Homework Assignment

Teach your parents everything that you know about organic and
conventional farming. Think about the lessons that that you complete
today.

information that they can about what YOU taught them today.

Appendix D:

Dear Family,

As part of the Kids Turning Green lesson we are going to make a


cookbook to celebrate story of your culture. At home please brain
storm with your child a family recipe that represents your culture and
the culture of your family.
It could be a traditional birthday dish, or dish that is prepared for
the holiday’s. Please write the recipe in the space provided with your
child. This is a great opportunity to engage in meaningful
conversations with your son or daughter about your heritage and the
values that you embrace in your family! Bon Appetite!
