A Finite Element Analysis

of
A 10-story residential building
via
ETABS version 8.2
Building’s basic data:

1) Units are in kips and inches.

2) All floors are the same with,

3 bays N-S each 30 feet (360 inches), buildings front
4 bays E-W each 25 feet (300 inches), building side

3) 10 stories of residential use;

4) Residential Loads: Dead load = 20 lb/ft 2

Live load = 40 lb/ft 2
Live for balconies = 60 lbft 2
The geometry can be imported from AutoCad through .dxf.

Select the load cases.

3-D view with beams in yellow, columns in green and slabs in grey.
A typical floor view, with slab, beams and columns.
The model is checked.
The structure is analyzed.
After analysis, select different areas to view the stress. Click to zoom in.
Check the stresses, shears and moments in the beams.
Check the building’s displacement, total and inter-story drifts.
Based on the analysis, the column sizes can be reduced.
The model is re-analyzed with the new column sizes.
