Town Pennabilli has less than 3 000 inhabitants.
As most of the rural areas, it struggles with lack of employ-
ment opportunities. Village related industries are scarce and
not paying much.

problem
Other essential facilities –
electricity, telecommunications, health, transportation, edu-
cation – are far from perfect.

solution
Nevertheless,
community of Pennabilli created
an event called Artisti in piazza – an international ar-
tistic event which attracts more then 40 000 guests every
year.

Pennabilli – thanks to its work with community, connection

with rural area and strong focus on education of youth and
adults as well – serves as an example of a great practice for
all entrepreneurs from rural areas.
Chiocciola la casa
del nomade

Founded in 2012, it is an artistic,

educational and historical-environmental center, which coop-
erates with Artisti in piazza. They organized the project

EnteRURALship
which supports young people from rural to implement rural
enterprises in their local areas.
The project was financed by the
Agenzia Nazionale per i Giovani (National Agency for
Youth) of Erasmus+ programme.
This booklet summarazis the project and its results in a way
they can be re-created.

Youth Exchange

From 1st to 10th of December, 2018, 30 young people

from Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and
Romania have gathered in Pennabilli in order to create their
own projects which they could implement in their local com-
munities
Day 1. Connection
“The topic of the day was CONNECTION. We started by play-
ing an icebreaker to – in short – break the ice in the group.
After getting some context about the project, we went on the walk
around the beautiful town Pennabilli.
In the afternoon we came to some common agreements about how
to interact with each other, and played more ice breakers leaving a
friendly vibe this evening.”
EnteRURALship Journal
There were several tasks
to accomplish on the first day, crucial
for successful cooperation during the whole project.
First, participants needed to
1) get to know the place,
2) each other,
3) and co-create rules
so they could live together for 10 days as peaceful commu-
nity. It is important that the rules were created by the group,
not given by the organizers (apart of the most important
safety rules).
Finally, they needed to
4) create a feeling of mutual trust.
Therefore the end part of the day was about TRUST games
– different activities requiring putting their safety into the
hand of the others. By that, they nurture mutual feelings of
trust which supports friendship and cooperation necessary
for the other days.
Day 2. INTROSPECTION
“Hello world!

We are
happy to
send you some
good vibes from downtown
Pennabilli! We had a tiring trip
from our countries to this beautiful hidden
gem in the Rimini Province, but we are so lucky to
have found a place from where we can get a lot of inspiration.
The first day was a great opportunity to connect with the other
participants. And when we woke up we were welcomed by a sunny
day.
More than that, the universe gave us an extra gift in the morning
so that we could get our source of energy for the rest of the day:
an alpine sea right in front of our hostel. We recharged our bat-
teries quite nicely while walking from the hostel to the Natural
Museum, because we passed through the central little park of Pen-
nabilli, where we felt the smell of autumn and we felt the morning
dew on the soft colorful carpet made of leaves. We built our excite-
ment even more when we heard that we will be doing a walk in the
nature around Pennabilli.
We started our activity agenda for the day with a challenging task:
to be creative in a group without a goal and without receiving
indications about how to do it. Although it was a total chaos and
it made many of us accumulate frustrations, we later understood
that this exercise was a reflection/micro-projection of the world
we live in. Basically, it was a wake-up call through which we un-
derstood that we need to take action if we want to make changes
in our lives and in the societies we live in and it was a cool start-
ing point for planning future actions back home (both on personal
but also on a professional level).
After this introspection exercise, we went on exploring the land-
scape around Pennabilli, activity that gave us the chance to admire
the beautiful nature around here but also to make connections with
our home countries. We got inspired in sharing interesting experi-
ences from places we have been traveling or living and we realized
that things are changing around the world: more and more young
people are moving from the craziness of the big towns to rural are-
as, for a better quality of life and with the hope of feeling happier.
The walk in the nature gave us energy and a nice appetite, for the
amazing food made by our cool chefs: Fabiola and Alessandro.
After a nice siesta we started the second part of the day. All of
these activities (the flying carpet, the success stories, improving your
competences and the pantomime) helped us understand that we need
to work on improving our skills and on finding new ways to com-
municate and cooperate with other people in order to make changes
in our lives and in the communities where we live.
All in all we had a full day, in which we discovered a bit more
about ourselves and about the people in our exchange group. Pen-
nabilli rocks and we are looking forward to learning more about
this place and about its people, and hopefully this experience will
give us the chance to come up with new ideas and new strategies to
improve our ways of acting and reacting!“
EnteRURALship Journal
Day
2 was about
understanding how we are as a people.
What are our strong and weak sides?
What are our behavioral patterns?
What roles are we usually taking?
We discover these through playing games and reflecting
upon them. We were focused mainly on soft skills
relevant for labor market, team-work and communication.
In the evening, the participants were invited by several
families from Pennabilli to dinner. They had a unique op-
portunity to get in contact with locals, learn more about
Italian culture and ask about the life in Italian rural area.
Day 3. Community
Day 3 was about understanding how the community in a
small Italian village looks like and how does it influence an
approach to entrepreneurship.
Through the days, the participants were meeting several
local businessmen who were discussing with them differ-
ent aspects of their work. One purpose was to inspire them,
second to uncover different unexpected difficulties or oppor-
tunities of rural enterprises.

Day 4. inspiration
At the day 4, we went on a field trip to Rimini to visit the
business incubator Innovation Square. We met people from
startups who draw the line between the business in rural ar-
eas and in cities and how they can cooperate with each other.
Day 5. vision

“We started the day with a big serendipity. In the Internation-

al Volunteer Day we dedicated out time to vision. All our ideas
started to come to life so that in the near future they can be-
come real projects that impact the local communities.
The day was divided in two sessions. The first one focused on
our personal skills and goals. Now we understand that the
first step must be realizing the reasons why we are motivated
to start the project. Inspiration can come from the simplest
things as we did this afternoon when we climbed to the Billi
castle to enjoy the beautiful sunset. The second session was
mainly focused in presenting our vision and allocating the
projects to each country.
At the end of the day the teams were created and we are ready
to develop our visions in the next few days!”
EnteRURALship Journal
The purpose of the day was to reconnect with the one’s
life goals and dreams so the rural enterprises the partici-
pants are going to create will become only one milestone
on reaching what their hearts always desired.
At this moment the participants were ready. They:
1) Found out how to cooperate with others;
2) Learned what are their strong and weak points;
3) Understood what threats and opportunities lie in
rural areas businesses;
4) Got inspired by many different kind of enterprises
which already exist;
5) Realized what are their dreams and goals.
They were ready to create ideas for a project and join
their forces with others into working teams
(see PROJECTS PLANS).
Day 6. business model
On the 6th day, we welcomed Andrea Zanzini, Coordinator
at PRIMO MIGLIO CSR Startups Accelerator and Intercul-
tural trainer. He came to support working teams in the crea-
tion of their business model. Like that, ideas slowly started
to look more realistic.

Day 7. ACTION
“The «action day» was dedicated to our project’s realization. Each
team had to fulfill 10 activities in order to start making the idea
come true.
We also had to create a video to show to the team the way we work.
It was a busy day, but thanks to the great sunny day that
Pennabilli offered to us, we had the chance to find some great
ideas by discovering the village and enjoying its magic nature.”
EnteRURALship Journal
“P. S. We hope you will like it.”

Day 8. PLAYGROUND

Since local families invited participants for dinner to their

houses, we had decided to repay their kindness and invited
them (and the rest of the village and region) for an intercul-
tural evening.
Participants had the whole day to prepare the evening cel-
ebration:
1) Arrange the space
2) Prepare food without using the kitchen
3) Prepare an interactive program focused
on intercultural dialogue
It was a beautiful playground during which they could test
how they are cooperating with each other, working in a
team, managing things, see about their leadership skills,
team-roles, etc.
At the end, the program attracted around 200 people from
Pennabilli and the surroundings. Participants presented their
countries, National agency and Erasmus+ program, their
projects and they started networking about their projects.
Day 9. COMMUNICATION
Day 9 was dedicated to evaluating their experience and co-
operation from the previous day and anchoring their learn-
ing.
Also, we welcomed guests from the University of the Re-
public of San Marino – professors of XY, names, etc. who
supported participants with creating a brand for their
projects and its manifesto.

Day 10.
closing
“All good things come to an end.
During the last day of this great experience, we remembered the
memories from the last nine days and heard about all the opportu-
nities that Erasmus+ has to offer.
The day wasn’t over without taking a final group photo and writ-
ing goodbye messages to each other.”

“Nowadays people become more and more divided and lonely. We
believe that this world can be a better place if we connect to each
other and we share knowledge, quality time and joy.

There is a big gap between generations and an increased need of

old people to feel accepted, integrated and useful. Our project aims
to help rural communities to better connect by offering the context

We want to start a series of monthly meetings refreshing the tra-

dition of “sezatoare” that exists in Romania, and to adapt this
concept to the present reality. In this meetings that will happen in
a public space (either public libraries, in the local cultural space of

tions, including universities, education and training provid-
ers, think-tanks, research organisations, and private busi-
nesses.

Youth Exchange

Youth exchanges allow groups of young people from different countries

to meet, live together and work on shared projects for short periods.

Youth exchanges take place outside the school environment. On a youth

exchange, you can expect to participate in activities such as workshops,
exercises, debates, role-plays, outdoor activities and more.
Youth exchanges last between 5 and 21 days. This excludes travelling
time.

Youth exchanges are open to people between the ages of 13 and 30. To
be a group leader in a youth exchange, you must be at least 18 years-
old.

YOUTHphoria

YOUTHphoria is an informal
group of young people based in Katerini, Pieria, Greece.
It was established in December of 2016 by a group of four
active young people working on the voluntary and non-for-
mal learning sector. We are united with the common vision
of a tolerant, multicultural society, in which each young per-
son can be an active member. We promote voluntarism, civil
activism, environmental awareness, creative expression, mu-
tual respect and productive dialogue.

Our goal is to create sensitive, capable of living and work-

ing in the newly formed multicultural environment, active
citizens and extend their personal and professional horizons.
Furthermore, we are advocating the active participation of
young people with fewer opportunities and we are encourag-
ing social values among young people.

To achieve the above objectives, we provide young people

with opportunities to improve their skills and enrich their
experiences with their involvement and participation in
voluntary action programs, seminars and mobility in local
and European level. We are very active in local, national and
European level. We organized and implemented actions aim-
ing to spread accurate information to young people from our
region.

We focus on offering our volunteers various opportuni-

ties for educational and mobility projects and we encourage
them to enrich their experiences and improve their skills and
competences. At the same time we participate in national
campaigns and we promote values and principals based on
democracy, constructive dialogue, free expression and tol-
erance. We are also very active in writing projects for our
region, taking under consideration the needs, requirements
and abilities of our volunteers. We are always trying to im-
prove our work and include more and more young people in
our workshops and projects.

Agoraveiro

Agoraveiro is a non-profit and

non-governmental, private NGO,
founded under the Portuguese law,
by a group of young professionals in
May 2010 in Aveiro. Our main field of activities is promo-
tion of an active citizenship, inclusion, international aware-
ness and healthy lifestyles and most of our activities are
planned based on those principals.

The association is widely recognised within both local people

and local institutions. We have been collaborating on dif-
ferent projects with some of the most relevant institutions
- like the City Hall, secondary schools (high schools and
vocational schools). University of Aveiro and we are often
invited by them to share our experience and good practices,
or to co-organize different activities.

Our local activities are mostly orientated to active partici-

pation in different processes of society: powerful guerrilla
actions (drawing attention of citizens to a social, environ-
mental or other type ofproblems), workshops (as diverse
as: baking biological bread, knitting, healthy eating habits,
upcycling, languages, origami, etc.), activities where we pro-
mote healthy lifestyles (for example creation of AMAP in
Aveiro where we connect local bio-agricultures with inter-
ested consumers) as well as social inclusion and tolerance
(like Suspended Coffee, Human Library), etc.

In terms of international scope, we are trying to enhance in-

ternational dimension and non-formal learning methods by
being active partners in meaningful international projects.

We co-organize annual TEDxAveiro and TEDxYouth@

Aveiro conferences (around 500 participants each), where we
promote entrepreneurship, innovation and good practices.
TEDxAveiro is aimed at 18+ audience, while TEDxYouth@
Aveiro has different concept - it is organised by youngsters
from local schools (with our mentorship) and for youngsters
<18. They are responsible for all the aspects of the organi-
sation: design of the stage, catering, event greening, photos
and video recording, postproduction of speeches etc. Most
of the speakers at TEDxYouth are youngsters from local
schools who come to present to the audience their ideas,
projects or achievements. Our TEDx event is the second
biggest in Portugal and this year we hosted 720 people in
the audience.

KULT Hub

KULT Hub is an educational and

creative space that provides to
young people an integrated experience
of personal and professional development courses, access to
a model community and the opportunity to implement their
own projects. Our NGO was established in 2017 in Roman,
a small town in north-east part of Romania. We are work-

all young people who want to change something around

Asociacion Cultural Somos Europa

The “Asociación Cultural Somos

Europa” was born with the task that
the young people of our province
(Granada) know more deeply what
Europe is, its different cultures, languages, ways of under-
standing life, history.... We want to strengthen the European
identity using intercultural knowledge as a tool. We also
want our young people to be socially more participative, to
be committed to be autonomous and involved with the social
problems, we want them decide for themselves and become
drivers of change. We would like to favor the acquisition
of skills through non-formal education mainly (workshops,
project development, cultural activities, volunteering ...).

We are a group of people, mostly young people who come

from working with the Padul in Action Youth Association
and the Padul Town Hall, we worked with these two enti-
ties working with the Erasmus + program with more than
satisfactory results. We decided to give One step further and
expand our work to the rest of the province. Our way of
working is integrative and proactive, it is the young partici-
pants who carry out and implement our projects always with
our coordination and supervision.

We developed our first European volunteer project in our

town, It has been a magnificent experience that has given
participants the opportunity to know new cultures and to
acquire new tools.

We collaborate with the Youth Center of our municipality

in the dissemination of the Erasmus + program among our
young people.

We have developed several informative talks about the Eras-

mus + program with the young people of High Schools and
University from Granada.
