EE494: General Education

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My journey at Iowa State University has been amazing and I have been allowed to take non engineering courses
that have enhanced my learning. I could not be more proud to be a part of the ins tu on. These classes have allowed me
to think, to be challenged, and to give me a larger perspec ve regarding other domains besides the major that I am
focusing on. My long term goal a er gradua on is to work for an interna onal company and gain experience in
developing sustainable energy projects before returning for a Master’s in Business Management. Solving problems is
something that has always fascinated me and having a be er understanding of other aspects besides engineering is
important in making sure I have a well-rounded view. As a transfer student, I had only one class le to complete my
general educa on at Iowa State University.

One class that I took outside of my major was Sociology 330 (Ethnic and Race Rela ons). That class was very
interes ng because it allowed me to learn how social values and societal structures are influenced by race and ethnicity.
It also helped me to iden fy, compare, and contrast major challenges raised in U.S society today. I found this class very
important since in the workforce, we usually have to work on teams with people from different na onali es and it is
important to be sensi ve to different cultures and ways of thinking. In the future I may have to work with people from
different backgrounds and it is important to seek mutual understanding. The class was taught by Professor Abdi Kusow
who is very knowledgeable in race rela ons around the world. He gave me some important lessons on how to integrate
into American society and how we can make the race rela ons in America be er. I feel like these lessons will be
something that I will always use in the future because having an understanding of race issues will be er me as a person.

I also had the opportunity to take History 1130 at the College of DuPage. This class discussed American history
from the Pre-Columbian era through the U.S. Civil War: peoples and origins, colonial development, revolu on and
establishment of the U.S. Cons tu on. This class gave me an excellent perspec ve into what different cultures believe. I
believe that each of us should understand the history of America because it allows us to understand the origins of the
country and the struggles and successes that have created it. It showed me that America is a mel ng pot of different
cultures and was founded on the immigrant. Being an immigrant myself, the class taught me a lot about how to value
human beings and their differences. By knowing the history it educates us and makes us less ignorant and biased and
changes our perspec ve on how we see things.

General educa on classes that I took at Iowa State University and others gave me the opportunity to gain
knowledge besides my major. As an engineer, it is very important to have a be er understanding of other domains in
order to be successful in the workforce. This is very important in the workplace because you cannot work with other
people and make assump ons based on their race or culture.
