Procedure for Steel Structure Fabrication & Erection
1. Fabrication shall be carried out as per the approved Drawings, specification.
2. Prior to start the fabrication work, all structural steel materials are to be checked with the BOQ. 3. All rolled sections & structural members shall be placed on suitable elevated surface to prevent distortion and for easy to work. 4. Steel shall be checked, sorted out, straightened and arranged by grade & quality. Each lot shall be verified with the Test Certificates supplied by the supplier for Heat No. & sizes to ensure traceability. 5. Structural steel with surface defects such as pitting, cracks, damaged and test failed materials shall not be taken into account for fabrication. 6. During Fabrication, prior to cutting all the members shall be checked as per approved drawings and part lists. Cutting shall be carried out by oxyacetylene controlled torch to the extent possible. Care shall be taken for cleaning the cut faces from distortion and burns. The cut edges shall be ground prior to fitment. 7. Approved cutting plan shall be available wherever required for optimum use of the steel. 8. Bending of rolled section and plates (Wherever required) shall be done by cold process only. 9. Holes for bolts shall be done by drilling only and not be formed by gas cutting process. Drilling of holes shall be done after the members are tightly clamped wherever necessary. All matching holes shall align with each other. 10. Finished holes shall be 2 mm larger in diameter than the dia of bolt passing through and shall be free from burrs. 11. Splicing of built-up/compound/latticed sections shall be staggered suitably in the drawing / specification. The joints to be spliced shall be Butt welded & flush ground before fixing splice plates 12. All assembly work shall be carried out on fabrication platform and proper jigs and fixtures shall be provided to avoid distortion during welding. 13. The structural steel members fabricated at workshop to be identified and shifted to the site prior to start erection. Each fabricated member shall bear mark no. which will help to identify the member and its position in respect of the whole structure, to facilitate assembly & erection at site. 14. Pre-fabricated structural steel columns and beams shall be shifted to site sequentially as per planning and clearance of concrete foundation at site. 15. Post concrete survey of the foundations shall be conducted to ensure the level (EL.) of Top of Concrete (TOC) of foundations, the anchor bolts shall be checked for location accuracy, projection and verticality over the concrete surface. 16. Sufficient stock of pack plates and shim plates of different thickness and sizes shall be kept ready with edge ground properly prior to starting the erection work. All other accessories like slings, D-shackles, chain pulley block etc. Shall be thoroughly inspected before erection starts. 17. Proper safe access along the columns shall be provided during assembly. Possibly steel step ladders shall be welded with the column before erection. This will be used for removal of slings from erected columns, fixing of beams to the column etc. 18. Hooks and any other lifting arrangement shall be provided for proper lifting and shifting of the structures. 19. Columns shall be placed on the foundation in proper orientation maintaining proper gap between the base plate and top face of concrete. 20. The alignment of the columns shall be checked with the help of plum bob. The column shall be aligned to the required tolerances. Pack plates / shim plates shall be introduced below the column base plates if needed. 21. Necessary welding in position shall be carried out as per approved drawing. After completion of welding all erection bolts are to be removed. The welding surfaces shall be smooth, uniform and free from fins, tears, notches or any other defect which may adversely affect welding and shall be free of loose scale, slag, rust, grease, paint, moisture or any other foreign material. 22. All the temporary cleats and arrangements shall be removed after final assembly of the structures.
