Intelligent Routing Platform

1. IRP Main Functionalities

Since service providers have different priorities in their operations, Noction IRP can automate
BGP routing optimization in two different modes: Performance Optimization Mode and Cost
Optimization Mode, using these main mechanisms:

IRP analyses packet loss towards a specific destination using

all your internet providers and compares the difference
Packet loss reduction
between them against a preconfigured value in order to
identify the best provider in regards to packet loss.

When analysing latency rates for a specific destination

prefix, the platform compares the difference in latency to
Latency reduction
BGP PERFORMANCE a preconfigured RTT value to identify the best provider in
OPTIMIZATION regards to latency.

if IRP detects any network anomalies for traffic going to a

specific ASN, then this ASN and the immediate neighbour
Congestion and ASN are considered as a problematic AS-pattern. The system
outage detection then re-probes the prefixes that pass through this AS-pattern.
If IRP confirms the issue, the platform reroutes all the related
prefixes to a better performing alternative provider.

The Cost Improvement Mode reduces operational costs by

Cost optimization choosing the lowest cost provider available, while maintaining
performance within acceptable levels.

Bandwidth management/ IRP ensures commit levels are adhered to for each provider
commit control by using a preconfigured 95th percentile value.
OPERATIONAL COST
OPTIMIZATION Since IRP automates the optimization process at the
Automatic Routing
network’s edge, the platform is reducing the risk of human
Optimization
error and also saves on engineering expenses.

The platform allows the grouping of multiple links from a

Load balancing provider, or several providers, to ensure uniform traffic
distribution.

Inbound bandwidth control reshapes the amount of traffic from different providers
INBOUND COMMIT targeting your sub-prefixes. IRP uses well known and proven BGP mechanisms to instruct
CONTROL your routers to adjust their advertisements of your network segments to upstream
providers and subsequently to the World.

IRP optimizes inbound transit traffic by manipulating BGP advertisements for different
INBOUND TRANSIT
upstream providers, thus influencing the selection of routes on the Internet and shaping
TRAFFIC OPTIMIZATION
the transit traffic entering your network.

IRP includes the BMP monitoring station, which can be used to collect data, diagnose
and report the state of the BGP sessions between edge routers and providers, as
BGP MONITORING
well as network reachability through a specific provider. The BMP monitoring station
PROTOCOL SUPPORT
supplies detailed routing data to other IRP components for even more intelligent
decisions to be made.

The feature allows IRP to automatically disconnect a BGP session with a provider suffering
CIRCUIT ISSUES
from excessive levels of packet loss, after taking into account configurable preferences and
DETECTION
rules set by network administrators.

2. Operational Specifications

Noction IRP is fully compatible with RFC-compliant network equipment and features several
tools and options to integrate easily within your environment:

When using this option, the platform acts like a passive

network sniffer, analyzing the traffic provided to one or

span from a mirrored port on your router or switch. It is worth
TRAFFIC DATA mentioning that traffic from a partial segment of your

The system uses one of the following methods for

ICMP, TCP, UDP probing a remote network: ICMP, UDP, and TCP_SYN. The
Probe types
probes probing is self-learning, based on the network responses,
updating the algorithms accordingly.

By default, IRP probes the destination prefix directly in

Direct probing order to collect the necessary performance metrics.

When IRP is not able to get statistics regards to a probed

destination; it runs an indirect probing algorithm, which
Indirect probing tries to probe the address of the closest router to the
destination.

NETWORK Probing Active prefix

IRP can actively monitor up to 100 000 prefixes.
EVALUATION methods probing
OPTIONS AND
ALGORITHMS Passive prefix The platform has the ability to monitor 10 million
probing prefixes.

After improving a prefix, IRP re-probes it according to a

preconfigured frequency, to ensure the current path is
Prefix reprobing/
still the best performing one. By default, the re-probing
re-confirmation period is 3600 seconds, but is fully adjustable to meet
specific needs.

IRP uses two types of BGP monitors to diagnose and

Via internal and report the state of the BGP session between IRP and the
Link-status edge routers. The information provided by these monitors
external BGP
monitoring enables IRP to avoid announcing routing updates that
monitors would result in traffic misrouting (sending improvements
to a failed provider).

The platform is able to announce routing updates to a

Route reflectors route reflector, which then propagates them to the edge
routers.

Multiple routers IRP can operate with multiple edge routers.
