Hi

I have just downloaded openDCP for OSX. I was wondering if there is some sort of idiot proof user
guide? I have been trying to make DCPs of some simple final cut pro projects but after using the
option to export using quicktime conversion (jpeg2000 setting) openDCP still doesnt seem to
recognize the project as something it can open? A step by step guide for simple operation would be
really helpful, has anyone made such a guide?

I also have other software at my disposal, apple compressor, mpeg streamclip, adobe media
encoder.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hero Member There is some documentation for OpenDCP on the google site under the Wiki section as well as
general information on this site. The issue you are having is that quicktime doesn't created DCI
Posts: 555 compliant JPEG2000 images, nor does it perform the XYZ color conversion. You need to export as
RGB TIFF.

I made a more simple instructions for people who have been asking more for instruction, its based
around what i use it for but has instructions for video and images. You will need Quicktime 7 as this
will let you export video to single Tiff images.

The basics are fairly simple. I just went through a 24fps 2K trailer edit that needed to be released
for our upcoming stereoscopic animated feature.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

The DCI compliant aspect ratios for 2K are:
2048x858 SCOPE
1998x1080 FLAT
24FPS

If you're releasing to theater chains, they are VERY picky about compliance ... especially the naming
convention. OpenDCP does a "great" job of title generation, but you have to remember to complete
every field. Here's how the naming must work in order to not be rejected:

NAMEOFMOVIE_FTR2_F_ENXX_USGB_51EN_2K_ST_20111213_FAC_i3D_OV
NAMEOFMOVIE_FTR2_F_ENXX_USGB_51EN_2K_ST_20111213_FAC_i3D_OV

Note that each "section" is separated by an underscore (spaces are NOT permitted) and
supplemental information is added via a hyphen. All CAPS is preferred.

Film Type: NAMEOFMOVIE is the title of the film/clip and is restricted to 14 characters
Content Type: FTR or in my case TRL13D

Projector Aspect Ratio: F (F=FLAT, S=SCOPE, C=Full Container)
Language: ENXX (XX indicates no subtitles)

Territory and Rating: USGB (my trailers are releasing across Canada to a General audience, thus
CAG)

Audio Type: 51EN (indicating 5.1 in English)
Resolution: 2K

Studio: ST (OpenDCP has a list of studios, you'll have to manually change the studio info if you're
an indie)

Date: 20111213 (YYYYMMDD)

Facility: FAC (restricted to 3 characters, this is the facility that created the DCP)
3D spec: i3D (use 2D if not 3D)
Package Type: OV

I've found that OpenDCP works with TIFF and DPX/Cineon (using DPX extension) files. While
applications like Adobe After Effects can convert to XYZ color space, it's faster and easier to let
OpenDCP do it.

Here's my workflow:

Uncompressed QT of Left + Right eyes into Premiere (had DPX sequences but opted for QT for
efficiency)
Edited/Mixed (5.1 as mono channels...total of 24 channels) to a 1:28 trailer in s3D
Exported 5.1 output as 6 mono WAV 24bit 48KHz files
Imported Premiere sequence into AfterEffects
Cleaned up 3D in AE, added graphics, flying logos etc

Rendered out of AE as RGB (Trillions of Colors) TIFF sequence (both left and right eyes)

From OpenDCP here's what I did:
JPEG2000 Tab
Encoder: OpenJPEG
Profile: Cinema2K
Frame Rate: 24

Overwrite Existing: Checked

Stereoscopic: Checked (uncheck if not stereo)
Bit Rate: 250 mb/s (150 for nonstereo)
Color: sRGB

XYZ Conversion: Checked

DPX Logarithmic: Unchecked (not sure what this is for or why I'd use it...but it converts the color
space in a bad way Maybe Terrence can explain when/why this would be used??)
The rest of the JPEG2000 tab is selfexplanatory

MXF Creator Tab

Source: JPEG2000 (note...there is a MPEG2 and WAV option for conversion to mxf)

Package: mxf interop (seems this is the "safe" choice if you don't have a specific reason for SMPTE)
Frame Rate: 24

You have to create an mxf for both the video and audio of your DCP.

When you select WAV as Source, you have the option of working with Stereo, 5.1, and 7.1
The rest of MXF Creator Tab is selfexplanatory

Subtitles Tab

I ignored this as I didn't have subtitles, but it's pretty easy to figure out what's required

DCP Package Tab

Use the Title Generator to help create the first pass at the title

I copied the generated title into NotePad and then edited it as per above

Annotation: I'm not sure what this field is for, I put the title of my movie here, in CAPS (no spaces)
and kept the _CPL intact

Issuer: I reused the 3 letter abbreviation from Facility in the naming convention, otherwise unsure of
what to put here

Add XML Digital Signatures: Checked (my understanding is that this is used to confirm the package
has not been altered in any way)

Reel Annotation: Again, not sure what this field is actually for, I put the title of the movie here again
The rest is selfexplanatory

Hope this helps a bit from a newbie perspective! Perhaps Terrence can explain what Annotations
are and why/how they're used? And a little clarification on the DPX Logarithmic color space option
would be great too (i.e. why/when)!

Annotations are used to provide a human readable description of what is in the DCP. They are
optional, but should just contain a description of your DCP, reels, etc. Their content is completely up

DPX has two ways to store color linear and logarithmic. If your DPXs are linear uncheck, if
logarithmic check. It depends on how your application created them. There is no easy way for
OpenDCP to determine this automatically.

If you are creating content directly from After Effects, check out Fnord's J2K plugin. It will created
XYZ DCI compliant JPEG2000 images and hopefully save you time.

Thanks! Will try the plugin next goaround.
Unfortunately we were rejected this morning. The lab found a number of issues with the DCP
wrapper and won't let the trailers pass. I don't see any way of adding an attachment to these
posts...but will email you the files (excluding the mxf files...unless you need them, in which case I
can dropsend them to you).
I'm unclear as to whether it's operator error (me) or an application error (OpenDCP). Regardless,
the end result is having to pay the lab to rewrap the DCP packages from the mxf files...while hoping
the mxf's are acceptable.
Will update you again when I know more.

Here's what the lab reported to me via email this morning:

In this case the report of "HASH ERRORS" still does not pinpoint the root cause of error.

We could conduct furthur analysis, but that would entail rewrapping each DCP. Would likely correct it if we
rewrap on Wailua, but we may not find out what the actual flaw or flaws were.

Just received another message from the lab:

The "Screen Aspect Ratio not defined" must be an XML thing. The title generator was used to
provide the info...ah...but was edited by me by hand. Hmmmm...most likely a discrepancy between
the XML files then??? No? Anyway, aspect was 2K F and 2K S

Interesting. Was actually generated as MXF Interop and not SMPTE.

I will post the OpenDCP files up to a server over the next day or so. Will also post the "corrected"
and rewrapped DCP package generated by the post facility out of LA.
