Asking For and Giving Direction

A. Asking Direction
If Someday you go vacation to another country and you didn’t know where you must
go, so you must ask people the direction. But its difficult because you didn’ how to
ask something to other people. Before something like that happend we must learn how
to asking for direction and giving direction.
Please pay attention to the example
1) Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the post office, please?
2) Excuse me, can you show me the way to the drug store?
3) Excuse me, can you help me please? Iam looking for a toilet?
4) Excuse me, can you help me please? Iam trying to find Diponegoro street?
5) Excuse me, do you know where the library is?
6) Excuse me, can you tell me where the nearest bank is?

After the example we can conclude that :

1) To ask something to other people we must start with “excuse me”.


2) For someone give us information we use command word.
For example :
“ Tell me how to get there”
But you must feel uncomfortable when you didn’t know the people taht you
ask. So to resolve that uncofortable moment, we can use some word. For
example : “can”, “could”, “would you like to”.
3) Can, Could, and Would Like can we use for ask something to other people for
giving us information or do something for us.
4) Wh-Question is question wich start with Wh-Question or Question
Example
When : kapan
Which : yang mana
Where : dimana
Who : siapa
What : apa
Why : kenapa / mengapa
How : bagaimana etc
The train station is in front of Garuda Hotel
The question is : Where is the train station?
Answer : In front of train station
B. Gramar Focus
Wh – Question with be Indirect Question
1) Where is the bank 1) Could you tell me where the bank
is?
2) Where is Malioboro? 2) Do you know where Malioboro
is?
Wh – Question with do Indirect Question
1) How often does the bus come? 1) Can you tell me how often the bus
come?
2) When do the banks open? 2) Do you know when the banks
open?
3) What time does the train depart
3) Could you tell me what time the
from Jogja?
train departs from Jogja?

C. Giving Direction
For us give the answer from the question about showing direction, we can learn a few
word for example “ first”, “Next”, “then”, “after that”, “finally”.....etc
The sentence form for giving direction always use imperative sentence.
For example :
1) First, go down this street to the crossroad
2) Next, turn left and go to east on Sudirman Street
3) Then look for the tall building
4) After that, cross the street and go down the Diponegoro street
5) Finally, Walk along this street and my house is on your right.
D. Preposition of Direction
To expalain about the location of the place must have preposition.
“Beside”, “Behind”, “next to”, “between”, “near”, “on the corner of”, “opposite of”,
“in front of”, “in the back of”, “across from”, “close to”.

 The restaurant is opposite of the bus station

The Swimming Pool is around the corner
