Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Examination, 2017

Third Year First Semester Examination
Subject: Fluid Machinery - II

Time: Three hours Full Marks: 100

Answer any five questions.
Assume suitable data, if necessary
1. a) What do you mean by rotodynamic pumps belonging to the same homologous series? Show that the specific
speed of a roto-dynamic pump belonging to the same homologous series bears the unique value.
b) How performance of one pump is related to the performance of another pump belonging to the same
homologous series?
c) A 1:5 scale model of a pump was tested in a laboratory at 975rpm. The head developed and the power input
at the best efficiency point of 75% was found to be 8m and 30kW respectively. If the prototype pump has to work
against a head of 25m, determine its working speed, power required and specific speed. [10 + 4+ 6]
2. a) With a neat line diagram, show that the total head development by a pump ‘H’ may be expressed as:
2 2
H = Hs + Hd +[ (Vd) - (Vs) ]/ (2.g) where symbols have their usual meanings.
2
b) The head-discharge relationship for a centrifugal pump is given by: H = 44 + 260.Q -3850. Q where H is the
3
total head generated by the pump in meters and Q is the discharge in m /s.
The pump lifts water through a pipe of 0.3 m diameter over a distance of 800 m. The static lift is 25 m. For a
friction factor f = 0.03 for the pipe, calculate: (i) the operating head, (b) pump discharge, (c) shat power if
overall efficiency is 70%. [8 + 12]
3. (a) What are causes and damage of cavitation? Explain the phenomena in reference to a pump.
(b) With a neat sketch, define NPSH and Thomas Cavitation parameter?
3
(c) A pump can deliver 0.1m /s against a head of 30 meter. The critical cavitation number for the pump is 0.12.
The pump is to be installed at a location where the barometric pressure is 96 kPa (abs) and vapour pressure
is 3 kPa (abs). Intake pipe frictional loss is 0.3 m. Find the minimum value of NPSH. Also find the maximum
allowable elevation of the pump above the water surface in the sump. [6+6+8]
4. (a) Briefly explain Unit Quantities in reference to hydraulic turbine.
3
(b) A turbine is to operate under a head of 25 m at 200 rpm. The discharge is 9 m /s. If the turbine efficiency is
90% determine: (i) specific speed of the turbine (ii) rotational speed, discharge and power generated of the
turbine under a head of 20 m. Also state the type of turbine.
(c) With a neat line diagram, briefly explain the governing action of a Pelton Turbine. [6 + 6 + 8]
5. (a) Neatly draw the performance of a three-throw reciprocating pump (three single acting pumps connected over
a common crank-shaft) in terms of resultant discharge Q and Crank angle θ.
(b) A single acting reciprocating pump has a diameter of 50 cm and stroke 50 cm. It takes its supply of water
from a sump 3.5 m below the pump axis through a pipe of 10 m long and 20 cm diameter. If separation occurs at
2.5 meters of water absolute, make calculation for: (i) speed at which separation may take place at the
commencement of suction stroke, (ii) change of speed of pump if an air-vessel is fitted on the suction side at a
distance of 2.5 m from the pump end. [6 + 14]
6. (a) With the help of suitable example discuss about surging in a piping system for a complete cycle of wave
propagation.
(b) List five possible causes of surge in a piping system.
(c) With suitable sketches discuss briefly about various measures to control surge in a pumping main. [10+5+5]

7. Briefly write short on any two of the following topics. [2×10]

(a) Muschel curve
(b) Governing of turbine
(c) Fluid coupling
