Carbon composition resistor applications

Although carbon composition resistors are not widely used these days there are some
applications for which they are well suited. These often arise from their ability to absorb high
transients without the risk of damage that other resistors might suffer..

 Surge protection circuits

 Current limiting circuits
 Other protection circuits
 Welding controls
 Some high frequency applications because their construction does not introduce inductance
Although the construction of carbon composition resistors is relatively straightforward and has
been established for many years, the lower usage means that they are more of a specialist item
and they cost more than other types, although they are still relatively cheap.

Carbon Film Resistor

these resistors can withstand high temperature and high voltage, they find applications where
these conditions need to be met The operating temperatures can be up to 350oC and a voltage of
15kV. Application of carbon film resistors include high power supplies, X-rays, RADAR
systems and laser.
Metal Oxide Film Resistor

The metal oxide film resistor is widely used these days being superior in performance to the
carbon composition and carbon film resistors.

As the name implies the metal oxide film resistor uses metal oxide as the resistive material
within the resistor - the most common is tin oxide, although other oxides can be used. The metal
oxide resistor is typically manufactured by taking a ceramic rod, which is heated then heated in a
tin chloride vapour to deposit a thin layer of the metal. This is then oxidised to give the metal
oxide film. Other metal oxides may use a different process.

Metal Film Resistor

Metal film resistors have good characteristics for tolerance, stability and TCR. Furthermore, the
resistors feature low noise properties and a high linearity because of a low voltage coefficient.
Therefore, in circuits where tight tolerance, low temperature coefficient and low noise properties
are important, often metal film resistors are used. Examples of applications are active filters or
bridge circuits.
wire wound resistor

The wire wound resistor or wirewound resistor is used in a variety

of applications and in particular it is used as a power resistor where larger amounts of
power need to be dissipated. As the name indicates, the wire wound resistor consists
of a resistive wirethat is wound around a former of nonconductive material. The wire
wound resistors are widely used for various applications such as:

 Telecommunication
 Computers
 Audio and video equipments
 Medical electronic equipments
 Defense and space
 Telephone switching systems
 Transducers instrumentation
 Current and voltage balancing
 Current sensing

SMD Resistors: Surface Mount Resistor

Surface mount resistors, SMD resistors use surface mount technology, SMT to provide
considerable advantages in terms of space saving and automated manufacture of
printed circuit boards.

Surface mount resistors are used in truly vast quantities. As they are the component
style of preference for mechanised manufacture of electronic circuits, surface mount
resistors, SMD
resistors, surface mount device resistors or SMT resistors, surface mount technology
resistors are used virtually exclusively in these environments.

Light Dependent Resistor LDR: Photoresistor

Light dependent resistors, LDRs, or photoresistors are often

used to detect light and change the operation of a circuit
dependent upon the light levels. These resistors are frequently used
as lightsensors. These resistors are mainly used when there is a need to sense the
absence and presence of the light such as burglar alarm circuits, alarm
clock, light intensity meters, etc. LDR resistorsmainly involves in various electrical and
electronic projects.

Metal Oxide Varistor, MOV: Voltage Dependent Resistor

Varistors can be considered to be a form of resistor in which the resistance changes significantly
with the applied voltage. The most common type of varistor utilise a metal oxide and hence they are
often known as metal oxide varistors, or MOV for short.
