DISCUSSION

This study evaluated the knowledge and preventive practices regarding dengue
infections among Semeru street in Malang city. The results of this investigation have
demonstrated that respondents were knowledgeable of the concepts of dengue. This result is
comparably high compared to previous studies conducted in Semeru street, Malang city.
Almost all respondents to the questionnaires are familiar with dengue disease. Relatives and
friends were one of their main sources of information. This illustrates good communication
and common exchange of information among people. Health personnel are the second source
of the information.

The majority of respondents are aware of symptoms of DF. Most were able to
recognize high fever, joint pain, and headache as the main symptoms. It is essential to note
that while majority of the respondents were highly informed of the causes, symptoms, and
dengue preventive measures, still quite significant proportion of the respondents hold wrong
notions about dengue transmissions. This was probably due to the educational message from
the mass media that the primary symptom of dengue is a high fever of sudden onset with joint
pain. Their ability to recognize the signs and symptoms of dengue was important for them to
seek early treatment. Knowledge of biting habits may be important, and many respondents
correctly replied that the biting time was during the day. This fact shows that methods of
preventing mosquito bites such as mosquito coils and bed netting are usually used at night,
which are not effective in prevention.

The present study showed that though respondents had good knowledge about dengue
infection however, they were not practicing what they knew. Control of dengue fever is
primarily based on source reduction. Although knowledge regarding the breeding and
preventive methods is essential but alone it is not enough to achieve mosquito control unless
it is translated into practice or change behaviour. In the present score the respondents toward
knlowledge about dengue fever is 125.8 and percentage knowledge hoghest respondents
about “Stagnant water is the main source for mosquito breeding” is 62.8 %.

The present study showed that though respondents had not good attitude about
dengue infection. Although attitude regarding the breeding and preventive methods is
essential but alone it is not enough to achieve mosquito control unless. In the present score
the respondents toward knlowledge about dengue fever is 109.8 and percentage attitude
highest respondents about “The public has the most important role in dengue control” is 57.1
%
Then, the present study showed that though respondents good practice about dengue
infection. Although practice regarding the breeding and preventive methods is essential but
alone it is not enough to achieve mosquito control unless. In the present score the respondents
toward practice about dengue fever is 128.4 and percentage practice highest respondents
about ”Do you practice covering water jars at home?” is 48.5 %

Some studies from Jeddah and Karachi reported deficient knowledge about dengue
fever in people of low socio-economic group. In this study though majority of respondents
had heard about the disease and knew its causative agent but very few knew about its
common symptom and its biting habits indicating a gap in the knowledge and same was
reported by other worker. Control of dengue fever through mosquito nets, repellents sprays
etc was reported by many students showing a desire towards avoiding a bite rather than
source elimination and same finding wasreported by workers.

The study concludes that sufficient knowledge was found among respondents for the
control of dengue fever but this knowledge did not change their behavior or was not
translated into practice. The study was conducted in one town only therefore, its results
cannot be generalized to all towns or all respondents of other towns. This point might be the
focus in educating people regarding prevention of DF. Despite the knowledge that stagnant
water is a breeding site for Aedes and availability of piped water has become more popular,
most people store stagnant water. The reason is that piped water in this area does not flow
smoothly, and blockages sometimes occur, so people tend to store water in containers. This
discrepancy between knowledge and practice implies that good knowledge does not
necessarily lead to good practice.

CONCLUSION

This study has shown that the respondent were aware about dengue fever (54,2%).
However, this is also accompanied by concerns about dengue fever (18%), from respondent
data indicating that there is still a majority of respondent have the avility to prevent dengue
but also few who do not have the ability to prevent dengue fever. Knowledge about dengue
fever is very important, because it will determine how attitude and habits of a person in
preventing the dengue fever disease
