Analysis

This analysis was created after a Little investigation made in the Emma Romero de Callejas
high school, especially with the eighth grade. The investigation purpose was to make a
compilation of useful information about the necessities, lacks and what is demanded in this
center of education related with the teaching process of the English language. In the survey
that was applied, most of the students affirmed that a special book is used in the teaching-
learning process of the English class; however, some of them said that they do not use the
book because it was so expensive.

A good part of the students answered that they use photocopies during the class to work in
exercises of grammar; moreover, letter soup that supports their knowledge. The students
expressed that their teacher uses pictures in the beginning of each class to facilitate their
understanding what indicates the utilization of the inductive approach because she starts
exploring their previous knowledge. Also, all the students mentioned that they like English
class, and participate actively in every class that is developed. Additionally, all of them
confirmed that the teacher speaks English during the class. On the other hand, the teacher
expressed that she “generally implement a varied methodology, but the ones more used are:
the Grammar- translation, audio lingual and the direct method depending on the topic that
is being developed” what show us that they speak English during the class. However, the
students stated that they do not listen to audios in the class what differs with teacher’s
answer, so the audio lingual approach or method is not completely used and the direct
method neither because here everything have to be spoken in English.

The teacher said that “the direct method includes some benefits because of using this
method every word does not have to be translated or taught instead of that the students add
new words and ideas that they already knew, and they have learned in last years through
television. She also indicated that one of the biggest difficulties that is present at the
moment of teaching is that some of the students do not have any previous knowledge due to
in their elementary school the English language is not taught as a normal class, so as a
result, she has to use translation frequently.

All of the students expressed that the teacher uses reading materials, and they make
conversations. Also, every class is companied with songs, dynamics, draws and games.

In relation with the solution of the difficulties, the teacher said that English has to be
included in the curriculum of each school as a class without exception, and as a result, they
are going to bring a basic level of English at least. She also added that to improve the
development of the class, she would like to implement audio visuals activities because of
not every high school implements this kind of activities in the class. On the other hand, the
students indicated that they watch videos, read song lyrics and read conversations in
English and they concluded that they would like to implement these activities in each class.
