the contextual social functions, text structures, and language features appropriately.
LESSON
In this lesson, you are going to learn more about procedure texts, precisely manuals
and tips. Furthermore, you are going to practice editing these manuals and tips.
PROCEDURE TEXTS
QUICK REVIEW. A procedure text is a text which is aimed to tell the readers how to do,
how to make, or how to operate something.
Turns out, there are many kinds of procedure texts. Marked by its specific functions and
goals, the kinds of procedure texts that we are going to discuss in this lesson are
manuals and tips.
Before we go further, let’s review the lesson regarding a procedure text in general. As
stated above, based on the purpose, a procedure text may describe how something
works or how to do and operate something. For instance, we may find many of these
text entitled “How to use the selfie stick”, “How to learn and understand faster”, et
cetera.
A procedure text contains some specific set of steps that should be followed, so that the
goal will be achieved. This information is written in the present tense and is placed in a
neat order divided into some sequenced steps.
How to write a procedure text
As the goal is to tell the readers some procedures, your procedure text should be easy
to understand. These are some tips that you can use in writing a procedure text:
• State your goals clearly at the beginning, more likely, make it into the title of your text
• List all materials and tools in order of use
• List all the steps in chronological order
• Use action verbs directly, such as open, turn, et cetera
• Use conjunction that shows order, for instance, first, second, next, finally, and so on
• Use adverbs that help explain the steps clearer, such as quickly, gently, et cetera.

MANUALS
A manual is one type of procedure texts that functions specifically to give or inform
practical instructions on how to do or how to use something. This type of text is usually
used in some products such as electronic devices, and this manual is attached to inform
the user on how to operate it. This text is also useful when you have any problem with
the device as you can check the manual which usually contains some information
regarding how to fix some problems.
The text structure and language features of manual is similar to other procedure texts in
general, --you can refer to the part of how to write a procedure text. An example of a
manual text is provided below:

A tip has several definitions. Here what we call tips mean a useful piece of information,
especially about how to do something. A tip can help you to do or to use something
better as seen in the text below:
Phrasal verb
In making the text become clearer you can use phrasal verbs. A phrasal verb is a verb
added with some preposition or adverb which creates different meaning with what the
original verb means. You ought to consider the context and the situation to determine
the meaning. Below are some examples of phrasal verbs:
He will look after the kids.
–Look after here means take care.
I ran into my elementary school friend at the theatre.
–Ran into here means meet.
TO SUM UP a procedure text is a set of instructions or directions to show steps or
stages. There are three main points of a procedure text, those are: goal, required
materials, and steps. It begins with the goal then followed by the materials needed, and
the steps of activities. In the steps you can use some phrasal verbs to express some
specific meanings.
