THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN

AYURVEDA AND HOMEOPATHY

1. AYUSH:- The first and foremost relationship between the two
pathies is that both are an integral part of the department of
Indian system of medicine named “MINISTRY OF AYUSH”,
commenced on 9th NOVEMEBER,2014. With an increase in
lifestyle related disorders there is a world wide resurgence of
interest in holistic systems of health care, particularly with respect
to the prevention and management of chronic, non communicable
and systemic diseases. It is increasingly understood that no single
health care system can provide satisfactory answers to all the
health needs of modern society. Evidently there is a need for a
new inclusive and integrated health care regime that should guide
health policies and programmes in future. India has an advantage
in this global resurgence of interest in holistic therapies as it has a
rich heritage of indigenous medical knowledge coupled with strong
infrastructure and skilled manpower in modern medicine. Medical
pluralism is here to stay and the AYUSH sector has a critical role
to play in the new and emerging situation.

2. THE FUNDAMENTALS:- Both the pathies have been emerged

as a popular form of alternative medicine in the past few
years. They both work on few therapeutic principles:-

 HOMEOPATHY:-

 LAW OF SIMILARS:- It is also called the Law of Cure. This law

demonstrates that the selected remedy is able to produce a range
of symptoms in healthy persons similar to that observed in the
patients. Some such examples of the law of similars are:
a. While peeling onion, it makes your eyes watery, and nose burning.
If you are having an attack of hay fever with watering eyes and burning
nose, the homoeopathic remedy prepared from onion called Allium cepa
could relieve it.
b. Poison ivy causes redness, intense itching, burning, blistering and
sometimes stiff muscles. Potentised Poison ivy called as Rhus tox
has been used for herpes, burns, eczema, allergy, arthritis,

 What AYURVEDA says?:-

 In Ayurvedic medicine, there are six basic

therapeutic approaches (dravya, guna, karma,
samanya, vishesha and samvaya) with which diet,
herbs and lifestyle can be utilized to deal with
various disorders. In Homeopathic medicine the
approach of treating “similar with similar” (like
treats like) is just one(samanya) among the six
approaches of Ayurveda.

 HOMEOPATHY:-

 USE OF SINGLE MEDICINE.:- This tenet of

classical homeopathy states that only one
homeopathic medicine should be prescribed at a
time and directs to choose and administer such a
single remedy, which is most similar to the
symptoms of the sick person. In homeopathy, the
drug proving to ascertaining the curative property
of a drug is done with a single remedy derived
from a single source –primarily plant, mineral or
chemical. They are the essence of homeopathy
and therefore engage all the principles and
concepts that make homeopathy a
comprehensive system of medicine. This was a
trend setter at that time when the usual
prescriptions contained as many as 26 drugs at a
time.

 What AYURVEDA Says?:-

 Similarly in Ayurveda we work on “EKAL

DRAVYA CHIKITSA” (single medicine practice.)
A single drug mentioned for single disease.
e.g.Vidang-Krimighna,
Laja-Chardighna
Shirish-Vishaghna,
Vrusha(vasa)-Raktapitta prashmam
Khadir-Kusthaghna,
Kantakarika-Kaasaghna,
Aamalak-Vayahsthapan,
Laksha-Sadya Kshataghna

 HOMEOPATHY:-

 LOW DOSE DIAGNOSIS/DRUG

DYNAMITIZATION AND POTENTISATION:- The
similar remedy selected for a sick person should
be prescribed in minimum dose, so that when
administered, there is no toxic effect on the body.
It just acts as a triggering or catalytic agent to
stimulate and strengthen the existing defense
mechanism of the body. It does not need to be
repeated frequently. The method of drug
dynamisation or potentisation achieved, not only
the reducton of drug quantity in each dose of
homoeopathic medicine, but also the dynamic
power gets increased progressively.Homeopathy
uses a method to create subtle(mild) medicines
through a method of “potentizing”(making the
medicines more potent by diluting and shaking
it) substances; herbal, mineral or animal.

 What AYURVEDA Says?:-

 This methodology is known and is part of

“Dravyaguna” and “Rasashastra”. (all heavy
metals are purified and crushed to ashes till they
become minute to potentize them). Methods are
different in some respects, however the main
concept and idea is the same-“Drug
dynamisation or Potentisation”-Drugs are
prepared in such a way that they retain maximum
medicinal powers without producing any toxic
action on the body. The method of preparing the
drugs by this method achieved two ideals(1) The
toxicity of drug used in crude dosage have
progressively reduced; and (2)increase the
hidden (dynamic) medicinal properties of the
drug. In other words, the drugs get dynamised or
potentised progressively and evoke its curative
properties.
 HOMEOPATHY:-

1. INDIVIDUALIZATION:- A homoeopath does not

concentrate his therapy on, say arthritis or bronchitis or
cancer. In other words, he does not limit his treatment to the
painful joints, inflamed bronchi or a malignant growth. Rather,
he treats all aspects, mental, emotional and physical of the
person who is afflicted with arthritis, bronchitis, cancer etc.
Homoeopathy regards each patient as a unique individual;
e.g. different person with hepatitis might get a different
homoeopathic remedy, each one aimed at the individual’s
totality of symptoms rather than at his liver alone. The
physicians’ interest is not only to alleviate the patients’ present
symptoms but also his long term well being. The difference
between the ways two individuals react to a similar cause of
disease is an indication of the unique way in which each of
them reacts. This uniqueness of the symptoms and reactions
brings in the difference in the remedy prescribed to each one
of them. Homoeopathic medicines are prescribed on the basis
of Individualization, which is tailoring the remedy according to
the individual’s needs. It means every individual is different
from others in some way; be it his stature, talking, choices,
behavior, or his susceptibility to diseases.Homoeopathic
medicines are always prescribed for the complete package
i.e., the individual,so naturally the medicine will differ for
different persons. The concept of susceptible constitutions is
very much a part of the theory of chronic diseases.Hereditary
influences and predisposition point to the primary causes of all
the diseases,especially the chronic type.
 What AYURVEDA says?:-

 PRAKRUTI:-This concept of
INDIVIDUALIZATION is termed as
PRAKRUTI ASSESSMENT(PARIKSHAN) in
Ayurveda. The medication for same disease vary
for different individual according to their
individual prakruti.

 HOMEOPATHY:-

 THE 3 VITAL FORCES:-Homeopathy

considers the causes of all chronic disease that
affects the human race to be the 3 vital forces
and termed this MIASM derived from greek
word meaning „to pollute‟( :).

1.PSORA:-Psora is non veneral chronic disease

and is present from the beginning to end of life
and is the root cause of many chronic diseases.

2.SYPHILIS:-veneral and contagious chronic

disease.

3.SYCOSIS:- veneral and contagious chronic

disease.

 What AYURVEDA SAYS?:-

 CONCEPT OF DOSHAS:-Ayurveda divides the life

force into three forms – VATA ,PITTA AND
KAPHA – (and fifteen sub forms) in order to
better understand imbalances. HOMEOPATHY
does the same with three forms of life.

 HOMEOPATHY:-

 THEORY OF VITAL FORCE:- the human body is

endowed with a force that reacts against the
inimical forces, which produce disease. It
becomes deranged during illness. Such reactions
of the deranged vital force are the cause for the
externally expressed signs and symptoms.
Literally speaking “vital” means essential
and“force” means energy/ power, thus vital force
means “essential energy” or “energy that is
essential for life”. Homeopathy believes that
there is an existence of an essential force in
every living organism which maintains harmony
of the functions and also differentiates the living
from the dead. The vital force determines the
state of health in that living organism, at mental,
physical and spiritual levels.

 What AYURVEDA Says?:-

 CONCEPT OF PRANA:-According to
Ayurveda – who for the last several thousand
years is using six different therapeutic
approaches – Homeopathy works through the
Pranamayakosha and the Manomaykosha.
Ayurvedic herbs and diets work through the
Annamayakosha. Normally there will not a
conflict between these two approaches unless
Ayurvedic preparations of Rasashastra are being
used. Normal herbal preparations and diets from
Ayurveda work through digestion and Agni
whereas Homeopathy works on a more subtle
level through the mind and prana directly. But
still both the pathies are psycho somatic(a
physical disorder is treated on mental level too)
in approach.People often forget that the source of
the three doshas is prana and prana is another
name of the vital force so much spoken of in
traditional Homeopathy. Hence, there is not as
much difference in Homeopathy and Ayurveda.

 HOMEOPATHY AND AYURVEDA ON

IMMUNE:-Both the pathies embraces the body‟s
natural response system by attacking the root cause of
illness or by encouraging the symptoms of healing.
This is why they are meant to completely cure a
disease. The medicines used are non-toxic and do not
have any side effects. Both of them works on a
principle by using very small doses of potential
substances to stimulate the immune system which
helps in healing the patient naturally.

 HOMEOPATHY:-

 EARLY DISEASE DETECTION:-Earliest

beginning of diseases, much before structural
changes in the cells (a diagnosis), could be
understood from the symptoms. Homoeopathic
treatment carefully adopted from the time of
conception, pregnancy and early formative years
of the child claims to free the child of the bad
effects of hereditary influences and prevents
various types of constitutional disorders in later
life.

 What AYURVEDA Says?:-

 “THE CONCEPT OF SHATKRIYAKAALA”:-

Similar concept can be elicited in Ayurveda as a
disese can be identified in the beginning as it
undergoes 6
stages(SANCHAYA,PRAKOPA,PRASARAM,ST
HANASANSHRAYA,VYAKTI,BHEDA) before
becoming a disease(evolutions of symptoms and
signs)known as “shatkriyakala.”If disease got
treated at the first stage(i.e. in sanchaya kaala) it
will not commence further.Still with step of
disease progression the disease becomes
stronger reaching to the deeply seated tissues of
the body and ultimately reaching to the
complications(bheda avastha) where it becomes
chronic poorly prognosed.
