against breakage and will be replaced free of charge together with a free
insert should the housing fail before the insert.
COMPANY PROFILE
Arvis - The early days.
Founded in January 1981 by two engineers, Bernard Warren and John Wright, both of whom
had gained experience in the manufacture of plain bearings and bearing housings with a
previous company. The 850 square foot factory the company started in was so cramped for
space, it had to be unpacked every morning and everything put on the car park outside before
production could begin, then it all had to be carried back inside again at the end of the day.

Stability.
The years have seen a steady growth and now has an international reputation. The company
now operates from a prestigious 9000 square foot building and one shareholder has full
control, with a workforce of 20 people. Between them they can account for over 200 years
service to the company.

Reliability.
The company has built an outstanding reputation for quality and reliability and includes most of
the World's leading bearing manufacturers in their list of satisfied customers. These and all the
UK bearing distributors account for the major portion of activity. Arvis's strength lies in its ability
to understand their customers' needs, translate them into drawings, and produce the goods of
the right quality - ON TIME. Latest technology is also employed and training conducted to
recognised national standards to ensure that the company maintains its competitive
advantage.

Dedication.
All this is made possible by the staff's enthusiastic attention to detail and the use of up-to-the-
minute technology in processing the order, producing the quality components, and proving that
they are correct before delivery.

Delivery.
Stock products are stored to allow rapid response delivery of solid and split plain self aligning
bearings, split brass rigid bearings, steel self-lube bearings, plain hanger bearings and steel
plummer blocks for rolling contact bearings. Specials can also be supplied very quickly and the
use of the finite scheduling software ensures that delivery requirements are achieved.

Versatility.
Specials can be produced with minimum lead times due to the company structure and
organisation. If the item can be identified or drawings are available the sales team will
endeavour to provide quotations on the same day as the enquiry.

Design.
A design service is available for non-standard products. The latest 3 dimensional CAD
(computer aided design) software is used to enable accurate drawings to be produced quickly
and efficiently. Due to the background and extensive knowledge of the trade, it is often
possible to supply a proposal design and quotation in one working day. Upon approval the
work can be transferred immediately for production usin CAM (Computer aided machining).

Quality.
All components are manufactured under a quality system approved by BSI in accordance with
ISO 9002 to ensure that they meet customer requirements.

NON SELF OILING PLUMMER BLOCKS

This range of fully split units was introduced in 2005.

The series has fully replaceable inserts and are supplied with a
Re-grease facility.
The standard bushes are Gun metal but other materials are available
when gun metal is not suitable.

RIGID PLUMMER BLOCKS WITH SPLIT
GUNMETAL BEARINGS GENERAL PURPOSE
This range of' S' type Plummer Blocks offers an inexpensive
means of supporting a rotating shaft, giving excellent load
capacity and wear characteristics. All sizes have 1/8" BSP
grease nipple.
This range has fully machined bearings and recommended
for use where replacement brasses may be required.

through B.S. and Engineers series.

Cap Bolts
Sizes 1” to 4 1/2” have 2 cap bolts, sizes 5 to 8 have 4.

Holding Down Bolts Sizes

1” to 5 ½” have 2 HD bolts, sizes 6” to 8” have 4.
Grease nipples supplied.
Horizontal Pattern 1 ½ and 2 diameters through (dimension S). These
Plummer Blocks are fitted with gunmetal bearings made in halves. The
lubricant is fed through grooves direct to the bearing surfaces, ensuring
efficient lubrication without loss. On sizes up to and including 4”
diameter bore the top half of each bearing has a nipple projection drilled
and tapped to receive oil or grease lubricator. On sizes 4 1/2” and
above the gunmetal bearings are prevented from rotating by snugs at
. one side, both halves being alike, the cap is drilled and tapped to
receive oil or grease lubricator. Prices on application.

NOTE: These units were originally made to inch dimensions. The same
castings are used for imperial & metric sizes and the 1 1/2 times’ and ‘2
times’ rule applies only to the inch dimensions. Therefore, the distances
through the metric bores are 1 1/2 or 2 times the inch sizes

SPLIT GUNMETAL HANGER BEARINGS

The split housing is suspended on a threaded rod
which is secured by lock nuts. The rod is drilled
down the centre and a grease nipple fitted
to enable grease to be fed to the journal.

DO NOT suddenly fail as a rolling element but wear extremely slowly and replacement can be
planned.
EASY Replacement of shells without dismantling the whole unit and its connected drives.
A ring oiling bearing will run trouble free for years with very little maintenance.
A full range of Imperial and metric units available from stock.

Imperial and metric sizes available from stock

These units have split bearings, housings and seals. A gasket between chair and cap prevents oil
leakage at this point. The split seals at each end grip and rotate with the shaft and prevent any
escape of oil along the shaft.
Provision is made in the cap to enable the gunmetal bearings to be correctly adjusted in the housing
seating
The oil level gauge and drain plug are fitted as standard and can be fitted on the opposite side to the
illustration at extra cost.
Special collars can be fitted inside the housings to take up thrust. These are not split and have to be
arranged on the shaft before fitting the bearings. The chamfer on these collars must be away from
the bearing face.
Suitable for high speeds · Designed for fans and similar applications. Quiet in operation ·
Compensate for misalignment occurring after erection · Oil level gauge fitted as SHAFT LIMITS
The bearings are accurately bored to BS4500: Section 1.1:1990 ISO 2861:1988, E8 limits. For
general use standard bright mild steel shafts or turned shafting to h8 limits can be used.
For more selective uses where high loads and speeds are required the shaft journals should have a
ground or lapped finish and the clearance between the journal and bearing diameter should be
0.0015in for each inch of diameter (0.0015mm for each mm of diameter).

LUBRICATION
For ambient temperatures O" to 30"C use Shell Tellus Oil 37, Shell Rotella "S" Oil 10W or an
equivalent. For ambient temperatures 30" to 601C uses Shell Tellus Oil 33. Shell Rotella 'S' Oil
20/20W or an equivalent.

EXALIGN PRE-MOUNTED PLAIN BEARINGS FOR
CONSTANT RE-ALIGNMENT

Glacier DU or DX steel backed bearings are pre-mounted in

captive inner members. The spherical seating allows
constant re-alignment of up to 15° during operation &
eliminates the need for precise positioning and alignment
during installation. The working clearance of the bearings on
the shaft means no press fitting is needed as with some
rolling element bearings.
Excellent load carrying capacity prevents edge loading thus
allowing full use to be made of DU & DX performance.
Proven characteristics of DU & DX are long life with
minimum maintenance. Sealing is unnecessary in most
cases. Shaft location can be achieved by use of locking
collars, if moderate thrust loads are expected standard
Glacetal thrust washers can be included.

A choice of three housing styles, pillow block,

two bolt flange & four bolt flange gives
versatility for mounting. Metric sizes from
10mm to 100mm & inch sizes from V2" to 4"
are offered as standard. Larger sizes are
available to order.
The standard housings are made in grey cast
iron & together with the DU & DX materials
ensure low operating costs.
Both bush materials are supplied with pre-
finished bores. Other materials are available on
request. See 'Specials' page.

Glacier DU is a high performance dry-bearing

material used where lubrication is impracticable
or undesirable & where the operating
temperature is between -200 °C & +280 °C. It
will also perform exceptionally well in water, oil &
other liquids.
Glacier DX gives outstanding performance when
greased on assembly only. Regreasing at
extended intervals prolongs performance
indefinitely. DX can withstand temperatures from
-40 °C up to 130 °C for short periods.
Glacier plain bearing materials can be used in
high load applications. The maximum
permissible loading for the bush, particularly at
low rubbing speeds, may exceed that for the
housing. Where such conditions are likely to
occur, design advice should be obtained.

Estimated safe radial loads for exalign units based on the strength of the cast iron outer
housing.

Glacier plain bearings materials can be used in high load applications. The maximum permissible
loading for the bush, particularly at low rubbing speeds may exceed that for the Exalign housing or
securing bolts.

1. Check from the table below that the load does not exceed the limit for the cast iron housing.

3. Note that the thermal conductivity of these units is such that, in the 'Application Factor' for
both DU & DX calculations a housing of a 'Light pressing' nature should be used.

Materials-
Standard bearing housings are made in grey cast iron. Other materials are available (See 'Specials')
Bearings can be specified in DU or DX material according to requirement. Both materials are
supplied with pre-finished bores.

Selection-
As a general guide on selection. DU is a high performance dry-bearing material, used where
lubricant is impracticable or undesirable and where the operating temperature is between -200ºC
and +280ºC. DX gives outstanding performance when greased on assembly only. Re-greasing at
extended intervals prolongs performance indefinitely. DX is suitable for operating temperatures up
to 120ºC.

Specials -
Pre-mounted self-aligning bearings other than the standards listed in this leaflet can be supplied to
special order

Variations from standard include: Bearings for shaft diameters over 100mm - Split housings to
allow for assembly in awkward locations or to provide a greater length of bearing. Housings with
provision for re-greasing (As an alternative. re-greasing can be through shaft end drilling). Housing
for special applications made in SG iron or corrosion resistant materials
