National Night Out

National Night Out will celebrate its 27th anniversary on
Tuesday, August 3rd. National Night Out is a way to promote
community spirit and fight crime. Last year it's estimated that
more than 36 million people took part the crime/drug preven-
tion event. It’s a great night to have a cookout and to hang out
and meet and chat with neighbors.

Our own Ms. Charlie, neighbor and professional storyteller, has two events coming up:

Wednesday, August 4 it's “Make a Splash”

Join Ms. Charlie from 7 to 8 pm for family night and “Make A Splash” at the Winter Park Public Library. The event is
free and open to the public. Feel free to come attired as moon-maids, moon-men, mermaids, mer-men, sea-nymphs and
water sprites...or just tropical wear. You can go to the library's website and click on the events calendar to register:
http://www.wppl.org/ or you can register at the library any time before the event.

Saturday, August 7 it's an out of this world and under the sea adventure at the 4th annual Mad-Hatter Tea Party for
Breast Cancer Research to support Local Sister Network.

It takes place at St. Richard's Episcopal Church on Lake Howell Road from 2pm to 4pm. This event is for ages 18 to 108
and costs $12.
There will be door prizes available, wear your tropical attire and prepare to have a “howling good time.” You must
RSVP for this event by calling: 321-279-1089

Your Good Health from Dr. Paul Ziajka

What is cholesterol and why is it important?

It seems you can’t watch the news or pick up a periodi-

cal these days without seeing either an article or an advertise-
ment about cholesterol. What’s all the noise about and should
you be concerned? Actually, it is a big deal and for your gen-
eral health you certainly should at least be informed about ap-
propriate cholesterol levels.
All animals produce cholesterol and need it to make hormones, vitamin D and
bile. It is a biochemical in a class of compounds called “lipids”. Cholesterol is also a key
element used by the body to make cell membranes. We get cholesterol not only from
what our bodies make, but also from the food we eat that comes from animals. Without
any cholesterol your cells would have no structure and you’d resemble a big quivering
pile of mush. Too much cholesterol though clogs your arteries and leads to heart attacks
and strokes.
While cholesterol is essential for life most experts agree that a “normal” human
cholesterol level (where cells function optimally) is in the 50 to 100 range. Sadly, due
primarily to our high fat diet the average American has a blood cholesterol level of about
200: 2 to 4 times the amount needed for optimal cell performance.
When your cholesterol level goes higher than you need, your body tries to adapt
by storing excess cholesterol in your liver leading to a condition known as fatty liver and
also by storing it in your artery walls. Build up of cholesterol in the artery walls is a dis-
ease process called atherosclerosis. Blood travels through your body via your arteries
and as cholesterol builds up blood flow is blocked. If blood can’t get to your vital organs
because of atherosclerosis you’ll have a heart attack or stroke. This is why it’s critical to
keep your blood cholesterol levels under control.
In the coming issues I’ll explain the difference between ‘good’ cholesterol and
‘bad’ cholesterol, how to understand your cholesterol lab results and ways to help control
your cholesterol through diet and lifestyle changes.

TACA resident Dr. Paul Ziajka is director of the Florida Lipid Institute in Winter Park that specializes in
the treatment of cholesterol and triglyceride disorders. For more information check out
