Removal and Replacement

Instructions are given in this section for those Field Replaceable Units
(FRUs) which require special system adjustments or instructions during
and/or after replacement. After replacing or repairing any system compo-
nent, perform the Post Repair Detector Testing procedure, found in
the Calibration section.

Note Note
During the removal and replacement process, references will be
made to calibrations (found in the Calibration Section). These refer-
ences will highlighted in red.

1.1 PMT Replacement
This procedure applies to both 2" and 3" PMTs. All digital detectors use gel
to hold the PMTs to the optical spacer.
The following materials are needed to replace a PMT:

Item Part Number

1mm Glass Beads 17 84 813

Razor Blade Scraper 43 58 920

1.5 x 40mil Screwdriver Not applicable

Note
Gel packets are not HD3/ASIC PMT Coupling Weight Kit 35 29 711

three inch packet is Gel for 2" PMT (6 month shelf life) 782-001004 (94 89 287)
used on a two inch
tube, the tube cannot Gel for 3" PMT (6 month shelf life) 782-001044 (17 89 960)
be removed and the
detector will have to be New PMT See Detector Assembly

1.1.1 Removing the Gelled Tube
1) Place the detector in Service Position.
2) Level the detector from side to side and from front to back.
3) Disconnect all detector head cables connected to the PI59(C)(CF) and
DD59(C)(CF) boards.
4) Remove the three Phillips screws holding the PI59(C)(CF) board to the
DD59(C)(CF) board. This will allow the PI59(C)(CF) board to pivot on its
hinges.
5) Remove the four fans.
Note the flow direction for re-assembly.
6) Remove the brackets around the DD59(C)(CF) board.
7) Disconnect all detector cabling connecting the tubes to the
DD59(C)(CF) board. Remove the brackets holding the DD59(C)(CF)
board to the standoffs.
Caution
There are no longer separate tube shields. They are now spot-welded
together as a ‘nest’. Be careful not to damage a shield as this will
result in detector replacement.

E.CAM Servicing CD-ROM 59 63 637 Rev. 03 Page 4

Note Note
Some tubes (1, 5, 8, 28, 32, 52, 55, and 59) have capacitors
attached from the PMT preamp to the shield. Use a grounded sol-
dering iron to remove the wire from the PMT preamp. The wire is
tacked to one leg of C103 or C4. Refer to the next page for board
layouts.

8) Apply pressure to the PMT in a forward direction to begin to break the
gel seal. Then apply reverse pressure to the PMT to begin to break the
gel seal. Now apply pressure to the right and then pressure to the left.
Repeat as necessary until the gel bond starts to break.

E.CAM Servicing CD-ROM 59 63 637 Rev. 03 Page 8

9) Slowly rotate and rock the PMT. Repeat until the gel bond is broken.

10) Twist and pull up on the PMT, gripping the glass, until it is out of the
shield.

E.CAM Servicing CD-ROM 59 63 637 Rev. 03 Page 9

11) Using the razor blade scraper, remove all visible signs of the gel residue
from the optical spacer. Clean the optical spacer thoroughly, but do not
use any solvents or alcohol prep pads, which will prevent the new tube
from bonding properly.

Note Note
The detector must be level to ensure that the gel, after it is distrib-
uted, stays evenly under the PMT.

1.1.2 Installing a New Tube
ESD
There are two methods for installing a new tube:
– Normal PMT Replacement
– Fast PMT Replacement

1.1.3 Normal PMT Replacement

1) Clean the new PMT face with a dry soft cloth.
2) Remove the divider bar from one packet of gel and squeeze the con-
tents in the upper compartment into the bottom one. Gently knead the
packet for approximately 60 seconds to mix contents.
3) Pour all of the gel mixture onto the center of the optical spacer pad.
4) Wait 5 minutes for the bubbles to escape.
5) Immediately distribute the entire contents of the glass bead vial (about
30 to 50 beads) evenly in the gel.

E.CAM Servicing CD-ROM 59 63 637 Rev. 03 Page 11

6) Correctly orient and align the PMT just above the gel and set it onto the
gel puddle. Do not rotate the tube, because it may cause the beads to
move out from under the tube.

with the head open and HV off to verify that the adjusted values
are now correct.
Quit diagnostics before making any adjustments.

E.CAM Servicing CD-ROM 59 63 637 Rev. 03 Page 47

17) E SUM and Baseline Offsets
For PI59 boards rev. 08 or less, the values in the Service Log called E SUM
pedestal and Baseline pedestal contain the information of importance in
relation to pedestal adjustments and uniformity. The values of TP19 and
TP20 will vary with temperature to maintain a fixed pedestal value.
For PI59 boards rev. 09 or greater, the values in the Service Log that need
to be recorded are the values set into the Params function of the PI: ADC
Ramp Zero calibration. The values of TP19 and TP20 will vary with temper-
ature to keep the ADC pedestal set to the values loaded in the Params func-
tion.
There is an inverse relationship between the values on these two versions
of the board. For example, if a PI59 rev. 08 board has a baseline pedestal of
+0.8mV, the PI59 rev. 09 board will have a baseline Params value of -0.8 for
the same effect.
When a PI59 rev. 09 or greater board replaces a PI59 rev. 08 or less, the
Service Log pedestal values should be checked.
– If the E SUM Service Log pedestal value is more than ±1.5mV, then an
E SUM offset should be entered into the Params function of the PI: ADC
Ramp Zero calibration.

E.CAM Servicing CD-ROM 59 63 637 Rev. 03 Page 48

– If the Baseline Service Log pedestal is more than ±0.3mV, then a
Baseline offset should be entered into the Params function of the PI:
ADC Ramp Zero calibration.

To enter offsets, perform the following:

a) Click on the Params button.
b) The information box in the lower RH corner of the screen will ask
for an E SUM offset.
c) Enter the opposite value of the E SUM pedestal value from the
Service Log.
If the Service Log E SUM pedestal value was +1.6 mV, then
enter -1.6mV.
If the Service Log E SUM pedestal value was -1.6 mV, then
enter +1.6mV.
If no E SUM offset is to be entered, then enter zero.
d) Press Enter. The information box will now ask for a baseline offset.

E.CAM Servicing CD-ROM 59 63 637 Rev. 03 Page 49

e) If there is a baseline offset, enter the opposite value of the base-
line pedestal value in the Service Log.
If the Service Log pedestal baseline value was +1.4mV, then
enter -1.4mV.
If the Service Log pedestal baseline value was -1.4mV, then
enter +1.4mV.

Note Note
The baseline Param value must be between ±2mV.
If the Service Log pedestal baseline value was +3.2mV, then enter -2mV.
If the Service Log pedestal baseline value was -3.2mV, then enter +2mV.

f) If there is no baseline offset, then enter zero.

g) Press Enter. The E SUM and baseline offsets are entered into the
calibration

E.CAM Servicing CD-ROM 59 63 637 Rev. 03 Page 153

19.1 Archive the /Preserve Directories
1) Boot up the SNAC computer to the service> prompt.

Note Note
Since the SNAC Computer is an OEM hardware component of the
E.CAM system, system-specific information on the SNAC service>
boot-up will be found in the OEM Section.

2) Format two blank floppies. See the Additional System Info section for
instructions on formatting floppy disks. Label the disks
Preserve 1 and Preserve 2.
It may take more than 1 disk to hold the contents of the /preserve direc-
tories.
3) Insert disk 1 (Preserve 1) into the floppy disk drive.
4) Type the following:
tar_preserve
If more than one blank floppy is needed to hold the contents of the pre-
serve directories, you will be prompted to insert the next floppy disk, and
then type ‘go’ when ready. Do not insert or eject a floppy disk when the
disk drive light is on.
5) The tar_preserve utility will finish. The contents of the
/sms/calib/preserve and /sms/config/preserve directories are now
stored on floppy disk.

3) During the installation process a dialog box will appear prompting you to
enter a database offset ID.

Note Note
Each machine on the network needs to have a unique offset ID.
Keep track of each number used for each workstation that will be on
the network! When assigning the DB ID offset number, it is recom-
mended to use the last three digits of the TCP/IP address to avoid
conflicts on the network. To determine the TCP/IP address, press
the Windows key on the keyboard to display the Start Menu. Select
Programs/Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt window,
type: ipconfig /all and press the return key (be sure to include a
space between “ipconfig” and “/”). The Command Prompt window
should display two ethernet cards. Use the last three digits from the
TCP/IP address of the E100B2 ethernet adapter. For example: if the
TCP/IP address of ethernet adapter E100B2 is 192.1.1.125, the
assigned DB offset value should be 125.

4) The TCP/IP window will pop-up requesting IP address. The IP address

does not need to be added at this time. Click on Cancel
