This publication was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and
Research. CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
PREFACE

This brochure provides a first insight into basic research in Germany in the field of
cellular and molecular biology and is especially recommended to early career
researchers from abroad.

Cellular and molecular biology research in Germany is primarily conducted at

universities but also at non-university research institutions. Almost all universities and
many universities of applied sciences host a cellular and molecular biology research
section. The spectrum ranges from small monothematic working groups to large
interdisciplinary departments and covers a variety of topics from traditional areas to
new explorative research fields.

This brochure is intended to give an initial overview. The following maps and tables
highlight research consortia and graduate training programmes at universities and
non-university research institutes with a main focus on cellular and molecular biology.
Application-oriented research centres are included, if they are also focusing on basic
research.

On top of this, there is a lot more to discover: e.g. the DFG funds a multitude of
individual projects in the area of cellular and molecular biology. These individual
grants outweigh the research consortia both in number and in overall funding volume.
Towards the end of this brochure, you will find a link to the online database GEPRIS
that provides an overview of all DFG funded research projects. You will also find
additional important links for further information about programmes in the field of
cellular and molecular biology and profiles of German universities and research
institutions.

We invite you to explore the many opportunities that Germany has to offer and
welcome your feedback.

hospitals. The key objectives of the federal government’s health research programme German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases 2009 www.dzne.de/en
is to improve efforts to fight serious diseases that are widespread in the population (DZNE)
more effectively.

The German Centres for Health Research shall bundle existing expertise and thus
make a significant contribution to closing knowledge gaps and improving the
prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. The research objective is the
close collaboration of basic research with clinical research – always oriented on
patient needs and indications. The close ties and the associated expansion of existing
research structures will enable translational research and thus a faster transfer of
research findings into clinical practice.

German Centres for Health Research are not shown on the map. Only the titles of the
overall themes and the project website are listed.
