Chapter 11: People and Media

Media
Refers to the mass media which reach out to the people in different places, in different social and economic
levels, in different ages in different educational background.
The New Media refers to:
Internet and Mobile Phones
The Old Media refers to:
Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations in newspapers, magazines, radio and television.
Print Media refers to the learning of principles of Media Writing:
Journalism is both SCIENTIFIC and ARTISTIC Writing
News Writing – should be objective and factual, the news should answer the ff. questions:
• What
• When
• Where
• Why
Feature Writing – the journalist writes about the places to visit during summer with photos about the scenic spots.
Freedom of the Press (However is now controlled by Malacanang)
Through News the ff. Information are announced in TV, Radio and Newspaper:
- Weather
- Power and Water Interruption
- Communicable Disease
- Advertisments/Commercials
- Latest gadgets, places, clothes,and other news
Two Biggest Television Networks: ABS – CBN & GMA
Leading Newscasters in ABS-CBN are Noli De Castro, Ted Failon, Korina Snchez, Bernadette Sembrano, Karen
Davila, Julius Babao and many more.
Leading Newscasters in GMA are Mel Tiangco, Mike Enriquez, Jessica Soho, Vicky Morales and many more.
Local News use the language of the region like Ilocanos.
National Televisions use Filipino
CNN or BCC – is in English language to get more detailed news abroad.
Newspaper Editorials such as Fr. Bell San Luis, Gemma Cruz –Araneta and well known personalities in different fields like
education, politics, economy, social sciences, business and others.
Old Media, newspaper was popular for those people who wanted to give their reaction regarding news items or
editorial columns.
New Media, Internet became available find it easier and faster to scan news.
With the use of Media, everyone has the access to post their own comments and reactions.
Media Ethics should be observed by media people so they should be truthful, reliable, credible, fair, and trustworthy in
whatever they deliver in the different forms of media.

The three major components of Media:
• Journalism – informs the citizenry about the current events happening in the local, national and international
scenes.
• Advertising – introduces products or services available in the market.
• Public Relations – introduces its clients to the targeted audience or general public in a favorable light.
Through the print media, radio and television, journalists are able to inform the general public about the different
events happening in the local scene, in the national as well as the international scene.

These are the public relations professionals who present their clients in a favorable light to the targeted
audience or the general public.
• Too much advertisement of food chains and junk food to young ones cause the bad habit of eating cause UTI.
• Addiction of online/computer games.
• Sleeping late at night because of overtime usage of social media sites.
