parcels have been addressed to the KGH post office in Copenhagen.
Historical facts for Greenland in the year 1920.
Due to a major seamen's strike, no ships used for mail to and from Greenland, departed in the
spring 1920. As an alternative the marines sent the ship "Islands Falk" to maintain the mail
connection.
Greenland received no telegraph line until 1925.

997 1905: 1 öre olive, pair and two single stamps + 10 öre second printing, two pairs and four
single stamps, all perf. 12 first issue. The unique parcel card dated 14 April 1920, with
violet two-lined official cachet "Kolonien Sukkertoppen" as used for cancelling the stamps
(GF24.18). The sender was the Governor of the colony who returned books to Arnold Busch,
a leading merchant of books in Copenhagen. The sending contained 42 kilos of books that
the Governor returned to Busch as he ceased his occupation in Greenland where he also
supplied the population with books (often used ones) and he probably had an agreement
with Busch about the return of unsold books. At top left on the front of card is noted the card
Numbers of the three parcels by blue crayon 17+19+18. On the reverse of the card there was
space left for frankings (normally much lesser stamps than in this case) and for a receipt.
Contrary to the parcel cards sent from Copenhagen to Greenland where no written receipt
was required, receipt was required in Copenhagen - the recipient might in this case have
made the receipt on another form as this one was plastered with stamps where space was
left for a signature and that might be the reason why this card has survived destruction. All
parcel cards sent from Greenland have, with this exception, been burned. The card has been
vertically folded affecting four stamps. The "Pakke-Porto Adressekort" from Sukkertoppen/
Greenland has been in a private collection since 1978 and has never been offered since. A
major rarity of Scandinavian philately. Cert. Möller A.I.E.P. (2010).

Denmark‘s Postal Authorities turned down the opportunity to issue stamps for Greenland in 1905.
But Denmark had to recognise Greenland’s authority to decide it’s own internal rates of postage.
Therefore in 1905 the Pakke-Porto stamps for parcels between Greenland and the Greenland Post Office in
Copenhagen were issued.
From 1905 to 1938 Pakke-Porto stamps were printed in 38 various printings. Together with the use
of Pakke-Porto stamps in 1905, the infrastructure was improved by new steel steamships serving between
Copenhagen and Greenland and also between the local Greenland harbours.
The parcels mostly contained typical local goods such as whale blubber, shark liver and furs from
polar bears. Goods imported from Europe: clothing, boots, books, newspapers and children’s toys, had to be
ordered directly from Copenhagen and were also shipped by this parcel system.
The parcels had to be accompanied by a Parcel Card. The Parcel Cards showed the written address, the
stamps for postage and the numbered parcel labels.
The parcel cards and the postal rate according to their weight was one of the primary reasons for the
formation of the NORDLICHT collection. It has been built up over a period of about 40 years. The collection
was always of the nature of a research collection. The collector himself was a very private collector, who
never wished to exhibit and thus is quite unknown to public philately. On his wishes and the wishes of his
estate this status will be maintained.
The research in Greenland Parcel Cards and the use of Pakke-Porto stamps undertaken by NORDLICHT was
nearly finished, when he sadly died some time ago. But the results have not been lost: the new book,
compiled by Carl Aage Møller and Torben Hjørne, summarises and preserves NORDLICHT‘s knowledge for
future generations of Greenland collectors.
The Greenland collection of Pakke-Porto stamps being offered here is probably the best collection
to come on to philatelic market for over 30 years.
