In order for something to be a goal:
What is a goal?
• It has to be important to you, personally.
• It has to be within your power to make it happen Why are some goals important?
through your own actions.
• It has to be something you have a reasonable chance What is an example of a realistic goal and an example of
of achieving. an unrealistic goal?

Teacher Will
Yesterday we talked about goals in life after high school. You all closed your eyes and
thought about what you will be doing after high school. You thought about your career
goal and pictured yourself. Today we are going to look at your goals again and see if they
are measurable- are they achievable? -Is it realistic?

What is realistic goal? What does it mean when you say that a goal is not realistic?

Teacher will discuss realistic goals and unrealistic goals/not realistic.

Look and your goal on the board and tell me is it realistic/or not?
Students will place their posters under the correct term realistic/not realistic.
OPENING
As you can see some of our goals are unrealistic (Super Hero). In order for us to pick a
goal that is realistic, we may have to take a self-assessment.

You might ask, why am I doing a self-assessment?

As mentioned in the last lesson, there are hundreds of occupations to look at when
thinking about a career. How can you select one occupation out of hundreds? Well, it’s
best to choose an occupation that fits you: your interests, your educational goals, your
skills, your preferences. To determine your interests, educational goals, skill, preferences,
and so on, you will need to do a self-assessment.

A self-assessment can range from a simple survey to a more complex multi-test format
that analyzes many different aspects about yourself. We’re going to keep things simple
and just self-assess our interests.

WORK SESSION Students will go online to complete the O-net Career Interest Inventory (profiler).

https://www.mynextmove.org/explore/ip

Students will go over the results of their findings on O-Net. Each student will pick out
their top 2 interest scores.
CLOSING

Students will share their top 2 with the class.

towards your ideal job

Yesterday we finished our self-assessments. We are now ready to start our Career

 When exploring the list of occupations, first scan titles for occupations that
sound interesting.
 Occupations with a sun icon indicate they have a bright outlook and are
expected to grow rapidly in the next several years, have a large number of job
openings or are new and emerging occupations. These occupations may be of
more interest to you.
 When you find an occupation that is interesting, click the title to display more
information.
 Read the description of the occupation and the sample job titles to get a better
feel for the occupation.
 Don’t get bogged down looking at the other information. When you have
finished with the detailed information, click the back arrow to display the list
again.

Write down two occupations

Teacher will check to see if the interests and occupations are supportive/a match.

Select one occupation to research in the Occupational Outlook Handbook or O’Net.
