Die Sammlung Emil Capellaro: Erste k.k. privilegierte


Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (D.D.S.G.)
Nachfolgend kommt der zweite Teil der international bei der WIPA 2000 im
Court of Honour ausgestellten Sammlung „Erste k.k. privilegierte Donau-
Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (D.D.S.G.)“ von Emil Capellaro zur Verstei-
gerung. Die Sammlung dokumentiert den von der D.D.S.G. eingerichteten
Postdienst mit Dampfern auf der Donau zwischen Österreich-Ungarn und den
Donau-Hafenstädten in Rumänien, Serbien, Bosnien, Bulgarien, dem Gebiet
der Dobrudscha und Russland. Es handelt sich wohl um die bislang bedeu-
tendste Kollektion dieses Gebietes und um eine einmalige Gelegenheit für die
Sammler der unteren Donau-Staaten, die Spitzenstücke dieser philatelistischen
Gebiete für ihre Sammlungen zu erwerben.

Historischer Hintergrund

1829 gründeten die englischen Schiffsbauer John Andrews und Joseph Prit-
chard die „Erste kaiserlich-königlich privilegierte Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-
Gesellschaft“ (DDSG). Die Postbeförderung wurde im Jahre 1846 im Ver-
trag mit der österreichischen Postverwaltung auf Hafenorte außerhalb der
Monarchie beschränkt, um eine Konkurrenz zu den Konsularpostämtern aus-
zuschließen. Dabei verpflichtete sich
die DDSG zur kostenlosen Beförde-
rung von Postsäcken der österreichi-
schen Post im Austausch mit den an der
Donau gelegenen k.k. Konsularpost-
ämtern in der Levante. Gleichzeitig
konnte die DDSG gegen Entgelt Post
zwischen den Donau-Hafenstädten
ohne k.k Konsularpostämter bis zur
Österreichisch-Ungarischen Staats-
grenze befördern.

Die Bedeutung der Donau


als Verkehrsweg

Die Donau war im 19.Jahrhundert der


wichtigste Verkehrs- und Postweg zwischen der Österreich-Ungarischen Monarchie mit Serbien, Rumänien, den Gebieten
des Osmanischen Reiches (später u.a. Bulgarien) und Russland am Schwarzen Meer. Die politische Situation in den Ge-
bieten entlang der Donau war in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts instabil. Ungarn löste sich 1866/67 von Österreich,
Rumänien gründete sich 1862 durch die Vereinigung der Fürstentümern Moldau und Walachei. Südlich der Donau bis zur
Mündung in das Schwarze Meer lagen die Gebiete des politisch schwachen Osmanischen Reiches, aus denen nach dem
Türkisch-Russischen Krieg 1878 Bulgarien hervor ging und die Dobrudscha an Rumänien angeschlossen wurde. Serbien
hatte sich bereits 1866 aus der türkischen Herrschaft lösen können.

Die Ausgabe von Briefmarken

Zunächst wurden Briefe von DDSG Agenten auf privater Ba-


sis entlang der Donau angenommen. Die dabei eingenomme-
nen Beförderungsgebühren verblieben bei den Agenten und
Dampfschiff-Besatzungen. Doch das zunehmende Passagier-,
Fracht- und Postaufkommen zwischen den unteren Donauge-
bieten vom Schwarzen Meer bis zur Österreichisch-Ungarischen
Grenze im Norden führte im April 1866 zu der Entscheidung
der DDSG-Verwaltung, die Postbeförderung in eigener Regie
zu übernehmen und eigene DDSG-Briefmarken auszugeben. Ab
diesem Zeitpunkt konnten nur noch im Voraus frankierte Briefe
befördert werden. Briefe über das Donau-Postgebiet der DDSG
hinaus erforderten zusätzliches Porto, das als Nachgebühr beim
Empfänger erhoben wurde. Es war aber auch möglich, die Brie-
fe mit Postwertzeichen der übernehmenden ‚fremden’ Postver-
waltung im Voraus zu frankieren. Derartige Kombinationsfran-
katuren sind extrem selten und gehören heute zu den größten
Raritäten.

Die Sammlung Emil Capellaro dokumentiert in wahr-


scheinlich niemals zuvor erreichter Vollständigkeit die
verschiedenen Schiffsstempel der DDSG Dampfer, der
verschiedenen DDSG Postagentien in den Staaten ent-
lang der Donau sowie die verschiedenen sonstigen im
Einsatz befindlichen Stempel.

Die vollständige im Ehrenhof bei der WIPA 2000 in


Wien ausgestellte Sammlung „Erste k.k. privilegierte
Emil Capellaro bei der Durchsicht seiner Sammlung
Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (D.D.S.G.)“ von
Emil Capellaro ist auch als EDITION D’OR, Band
XVIII, zum Preis von CHF 99.00 (EUR 69.00) bei
Corinphila erhältlich.

5453 1866: 10 kr. lilac, single and horizontal pair (with left hand adhesive being contemporarily
defective) used on triple weight June 1868 entire letter from Calafat to Braila tied by
Roman dated "CALAFAT-6/VI" cds's in watery blue ink (Tchilinghirian fig. 782). Some creasing
due probably to the original bulky enclosure, however despite the faults, a remarkable and
extremely rare cover bearing the largest number of this stamp on letter-no similar items
being recorded in the Antonini, Jerger, Kelly, See or Steindler collections. Signed Zenker

5454 1867: 10 kr. green, Type I, fine horizontal pair used on double weight 1868 entire letter
from Calafat to Braila tied by Roman dated "CALAFAT-7/XI" datestamps in blue (Tchilinghirian
fig. 782). Right hand adhesive with perforations slightly trimmed and some vertical bends
most probably caused by original enclosure, but a very rare multiple franking of this issue.

piastres to pay = 15 kreuzers on front. The adhesive with slight ageing but a rare entire to a

and Küstendje to Constantinople in combination with Austrian Levant 1864 10 s. blue,
perf. 9 1/2, (2) cancelled by manuscript pen strokes and one 10 s. stamp also tied by oval
"SILISTRIA / (27) - 8" handstamp in blue (as Tchilinghirian fig. 30), with day of date '27' inserted in
manuscript. Reverse with Austrian P.O. in Constantinople arrival datestamp in black (Aug
29). Overall toning around perforations and horizontal file fold well away from adhesives,
strengthened on inside of cover, however the minor imperfections affect neither the

with corner added and one reverse flap repaired, but an attractive usage of this scarce stamp

5472 1866: 17 kr. red, perf 9 1/2, creased example on 1867 cover to Galatz cancelled by circular
"6/12" in blue used primarily at Sistov (Tchilinghirian fig. 928a), with scarce Roman dated
"GALAZ-10/XII" cds on reverse (fig. 813) on reverse. Cover cleaned and pressed but not

5473 1867: 10 kr. deep green, Type I, the remarkable piece with single and horizontal pair all tied
by circular date "3/10" handstamps in blue applied at Sistov (Tchilinghirian fig. 928a). Two stamps
affected by negligible file folds but an extraordinary multiple usage of great rarity for this
issue and a very attractive Exhibition piece.

imperfections of no real significance, a marvellous and rare combination. Illustrated in

pair superbly cancelled by Roman dated "SISTOV-10/XII" datestamp in blue (Tchilinghirain
fig. 929). File fold runs beneath the pair with some minor ageing, but this does not detract
from the marvellous appearance of this rare multiple on a double rate entire. Illustrated in

5484 1866: 10 kr. lilac, rare usage of horizontal pair used on November 1868 cover from Widdin
