Zed Friedhof - Tomb Robber (Wade)

Zed grew up in Pfieldorf, a mid-sized town along the Reik River near the boarder of Averland and
Wissenland. His father, Mandred Friedhof, was a traveling merchant who was ready to settle down when
he met Zed’s mother, and they had 3 boys together – Zed (the oldest) and twins Krolf and Liand. But
after 5 years of child-rearing a wanderlust struck Zed’s father. He abandoned his family and was not
heard from again. Raising 3 small boys on her own was tough on Zed’s mother, and Zed received little in
the way of care and guidance growing up. Slowly but surely this led him and his brothers into a life of
crime.

Zed and Liand traveled from city to city, making friends among the underworld and filling various roles
of thief, thug, negotiator, and enforcer. Krolf stayed behind in Pfieldorf and worked in the woods as a log
cutter and in town as a petty thief. But Zed and Liand had larger goals, they wanted to make it big, and
when one of their underworld contacts in Averheim told them about an expedition to Sylvania (an area
similar in style to Transylviania) they were eager to find great riches.

And riches they did find, as Zed and Liand learned the trade of the Tomb Robber. They gained great
wealth by mercilessly robbing ancient burial grounds throughout the region governed by the Von
Drakenhof family.

But perhaps they had been too successful – word of their plunder spread and the Friedhof brothers were
considering moving on, when a fateful event occurred. In the middle of the night Zed and Liand were just
returning to the surface from a crypt located in the center of an ancient cemetery when they found
themselves surrounded. Count Von Drakenhof himself was having them tracked, and now he stood
before them amongst a group of living corpses and animated skeletons. The Friedhof brothers had heard
tales of the dead returning to life to carry out unspeakable tasks for the Counts and Nobels of the area, but
they figured them to be just that – stories – told to scare them away from the plunder they sought. But
this night the stories had come alive. Liand was frozen in his tracks, completely rooted to the ground.
Zed, however, was able to gather his wits and bolt, dodging between and outrunning the denizens of the
night. But he knew that Liand was not so lucky, and after making good his escape, he looked back from a
nearby hilltop to see Von Drakenhof murder and drink the blood of his brother.

Knowing that he must need escape immediately, Zed fled Sylvania taking only what little he could carry
on his back. He dared not enter Sylvania again, and the tombs in the Empire were either already looted or
far too well guarded. At wit’s end, Zed decided to return to Pfieldorf and see what his other brother had
been up to. When he returned he was given bad news – Krolf had picked up some strange disease in the
forest, and had been locked in a quarantine by the town physician. But Krolf had escaped six weeks
earlier and was not seen or heard from again.

While drowning his sorrows in a tankard of ale, Zed met a dwarf named Triex in the deserted bar room of
an inn. Triex was spending a night in Pfieldorf awaiting a riverboat to carry him toward Nuln. The dwarf
was reserved at first, but after Zed bought him a few beers the two of them began swapping stories. For
some reason Triex seemed very trustworthy, and for the first time Zed told another soul about what he had
seen in the cemetery that night. Surprisingly, Triex believed him without a doubt and they became fast
friends. Triex expressed a desire to rid the Empire of evil, which he believed was a growing force. He
also told Zed of his quest to lay his hands upon the crown of Sigmar, which was kept at the Holy Temple
to Sigmar in Altorf. This goal hit home with Zed, and having no place else to go, he agreed to
accompany the dwarf on his journey to see the Crown of Sigmar.

It was time for a new adventure, one that lay as far from Sylvania as possible.

Manfred (Manny) Steigler – Coachman (Jaichen)

Manny’s father and grandfather before him were both coachman, and from an early age it was expected
that Manny would be a coachman too. He learned to ride a horse and drive a cart by 8 years old, and by
the age of 12 he could handle a stagecoach all on his own.

His family lived in Kraildorf, a small village in the Wissenland located along the banks of the Upper
Reik. By age 14 he saw little of his village as he assisted his father and grandfather in the family
business, driving coaches across the Black Mountains into the Border Princes and Tilea.

But there was a catch – Manny hated the family business. The pay was only just enough to get by and the
long hours sitting atop a bumpy cart just didn’t appeal to him. No, Manny was much more ambitious than
that. He had big dreams, and they didn’t involve driving people from place to place.

However, there was one part of the coaching business that did appeal to Manny. On his 14 birthday, his
th

father gave him a blunderbuss. Manny loved his blunderbuss and spent hours practicing with it, learning
to repair it, and just plain blowing things up. This got him fascinated with gunpowder and other powders
that produced explosions. Through long hours tinkering he had figured out how to create rudimentary
incendiaries, but the price of the chemicals required to create them made it impossible for him to ever
finish very many. Still, the ones that he did finish were awesome – the sound and power of them!
Seeing his talents, Manny’s uncle gave him an old pistol to tinker with. However the first time Manny
fired it, parts of the pistol blew up and it was damaged beyond repair. Manny tinkered with it and tried to
repair it, but it seemed someone more skilled would be required.

Soon after turning 18 years old, Manny had made up his mind – he was leaving Kraildorf and the
Wissenland and would travel the Empire. He was restless and ambitious, and knew that great deeds lay in
his future, all he needed was to go out and find them. So one day, he grabbed his belongings, what money
he had saved, and bought passage on a riverboat headed for Nuln. Nuln was a big city to be sure, but he
really wanted to go to Altdorf, the capitol of the Empire. In Altdorf surely he would find adventure, and
certainly he could find someone who could repair his pistol.

But the road to Altdorf is long, and the riverboat was only going to Nuln, so he would need to ride a
coach in order to get there. “How ironic indeed,” he thought, as he counted through his saved gold
crowns making sure he had enough for the coach’s fare.

Nigel Lancaster – Wizard’s apprentice

(Jeremy)

Nigel grew up as one of 7 children in a middle class family who lived just outside the slums of
Marionburg. With so many children around the home, Nigel was often lost in the shuffle. However a
wealthy friend of the family, Maximilian Davies, took an early interest in Nigel. He seemed to sense that
Nigel was special. Over the years Nigel spent a good deal of time with Maximilian, as he would go to his
home often to play games, read books from his study, look at the stars through his small telescope, or
listen to Max’s enthralling stories of the history of far away lands. When Nigel turned 15, Maximilian
approached the Lancasters about the possibly of sending Nigel to University of Nuln, where Nigel could
study to be the scholar he seemed destined to become.

Max traveled with Nigel to Nuln and made arrangements to pay for future semesters directly with the
University. Nigel loved the University, and read volumes of books covering every conceivable subject.
He was particularly interested in the sciences, especially astronomy. All seemed to be going so well for
Nigel, until one fateful day when he received a terrible message. Maximilian had died of a rare disease,
and with him went the University’s tuition. Nigel was tossed out, and could no longer use the library.

Unsure where to go, Nigel remembered hearing about Heironymous Blitzen, an Astronomer and
Astromancer who traveled the southern Empire teaching the ways of astronomy and recruiting
apprentices. Using his contacts at the University, Nigel managed to discover Heironymous was in
Pfieldorf, and Nigel secured passage on a riverboat there with what was left of Maximilian’s money.

Upon meeting, Heironymous immediately took an interest in Nigel. He believed that Nigel had a spark,
and could practice the Arts of Magic easily if he desired. The boy was eager to learn more, and
Heironymous trained him as an apprentice. But the Astromancer was a traveler in search of knowledge
and was not staying in Pfieldorf overly long. He told Nigel, “You have read so much of the world, but
now you must see it! Travel the Empire, and in time we will meet again. Go to Altdorf when you are
ready, for the Colleges of Magic are a sight to behold! Show them your papers and all will be taken care
of.”

A day before Heironymous was to depart, the two of them met a traveling Marine whom Heironymous
had met years earlier in Kamperbad. His name was Brutus, and he was also originally from Marionburg.
Brutus was very jovial, and was excited to be traveling to Altdorf to meet up with an old friend. After
chatting for a while, Heironymous thought that Brutus would make an excellent chaperone for Nigel.
Heironymous said, “Brutus, why don’t you take this boy with you! He needs to see the world, and I’m
sure he’d love to visit Altdorf.” After some gold exchanged hands, Brutus agreed, and soon the two of
them were on a riverboat headed north waving goodbye to Heironymous.

Triex Khan – Dwarven Shieldbreaker (Jeff)

Triex was born in a small dwarven community deep within the Black Mountains region of the southern
Empire. Life was simple and sweet for many years, as his family worked iron, copper and gemstone
mines, created marvelous tools, and sold them to traders in nearby human villages. But a fateful event
happened when Triex was just 7 years old. An orcish warchief had organized a raid, and while Triex and
his family was sleeping in their beds, a small army of goblins burst in. His father and older brother killed
5 of them with their bare hands, but they were eventually overcome by the goblin’s sheer number. Before
his innocent eyes, Triex’s father and brother were brutally murdered and eaten, while his mother and
sister were carried off to be raped and eaten by the chieftains. But somehow little Triex hiding in the
corner was overlooked.

A few surviving villagers found Triex the next day, still sobbing over the bloody dismembered corpses of
his family. They took him to Karak Norn, a huge dwarven stronghold in the mountains between
Wissenland and Athel Loren, where he was taken in as an orphan. Triex grew up strong, and vowed to
avenge the fate of his family by becoming a Shield Breaker. He trained harder than anyone his age, and
left his sparring partners with huge welts and broken bones. When he was old enough, Triex went on
expeditions and raids throughout the mountains. But somehow killing goblins would not heal the hurt he
still felt inside. He made few friends and often wondered what should become of his life.

At the age of 22 Triex had a powerful vision. It was of a human warrior who wielded a great warhammer
and was flanked by both human and dwarven soldiers. His army smashed through the goblin hordes and
the rivers ran both red and green with their blood. After the battle was over, the warrior said to Triex,
“The orcish hordes are gone, you are fighting the threats of the past. If the dwarves and humans do not
ally again against the next threat, all will be lost.”

This left Triex with more questions than answers. Was the man in his vision the mighty Sigmar
Hildenhammer, who saved the Empire 2000 years ago? And what was the “next threat” that he spoke of?
The vision was so powerful that Triex had to learn more. He ventured to the nearest Temple of Sigmar,
which was in the human town of Drasselhiem, a small river town along the banks of the River Reik.
There he spoke and prayed with the town’s spiritual leader, Halamir Rüffel, who taught him all there was
to know about the great and powerful Sigmar. Drasselhiem welcomed Triex, as they needed strong
warriors to protect the town from bandits and beastmen. There he met Kaza-Nina, a fellow dwarf who
also made her residence in Drasselhiem. They wed 6 months later, and for once Triex felt at home.

One evening, while praying alone in the temple, Triex had a second vision. This vision was somehow
even more powerful than the first. Sigmar sat on a huge towering throne, and was much older with a gray
beard that flowed to his knees. He wore a golden crown, and his warhammer rested by his side. As Triex
knelt before him, Sigmar spoke:
“Triex, you have been most pious and devoted, and I feel I can truly trust you. But you have
become complacent. The Empire is in grave danger and I know not whom is on our side. This
danger however, comes from within. The lords of Chaos grow stronger year by year, and have
attracted followers both human and dwarvish. They seek to undermine the stability of this land
which is so great, and crush it into ruin. You must travel to Altdorf and seek out the Great Temple
in my name which is there. Therein lies a room which contains my crown: behold this crown,

touch this crown, and you will be given a greater insight into the plague which confronts the
world.”

Then Sigmar rose, and lightly touched Triex on his forehead. He continued:
“Do not speak of this threat I have told you, for you will not be believed and you will be marked
by those who would bring me down. Heed my words that the Empire is in grave danger. Go
now.”

When Triex recovered from his vision, he noticed that he now had a tatoo of Sigmar’s twin-tailed comet
on his right bicep. Triex was so moved by this vision that without a word to anyone he returned home and
gathered his belongings. Leaving Kaza-Nina with only a cryptic note, he took only what was needed for
the journey and set off to get to Altdorf as quickly as possible. He quickly found a riverboat headed to
Nuln, and thought that he would be able to travel the rest of the distance by stagecoach.

While changing boats in Pfieldorf, Triex met Zed Friedhof, a young man who’d had a terrible experience.
Over a few ales in a deserted inn, he and Zed exchanged stories. Triex learned that while Zed was
traveling in the eastern Empire, he had encountered an unspeakable terror: the dead rose from their graves
and his brother’s blood was consumed by a creature most vile. This struck home with Triex, who knew
that the Empire was in great danger. They became fast friends, and Triex told Zed of his journey to see the
crown of Sigmar. Zed, having nowhere to go, asked to come along, and the two agreed to travel to Altdorf
together.

Brutus Stefanus – Marine (Alan)

Brutus grew up on the streets of Marionburg, and the streets were what raised him in truth. As a lad he
was tough and strong, and he had to be lest he be bullied by the bigger kids. By the time he was 14,
Brutus was well known by everyone as a chap not to mess with. He seemed nice enough, but if you
crossed him, he’d break your jaw.

Brutus worked odd jobs growing up, but never found any work he enjoyed. At the age of 19 he decided
he’d had enough of working the docks, and decided he needed to see the world. But that was a tough
thing to do with little skills or money, so he turned to the one thing he did well, which was fight. Vessels
traveling north were under constant attack from Norse raiders and needed an able group of marines on
board to defend them. So Brutus signed up, and for 10 years he traveled the northern seas as a marine,
defending Marionburg’s trading ships from pirates and Norse raiders. He called on nearly every port in
northern Britonia, Kislev, and along the Empire’s northern coast. While he enjoyed the money and travel,
Brutus loved the drinking, gambling, wenching, and horing the most.

At the age of 29, a fateful event occurred. He was on the deck of a huge trading galley bound for
Eringrad (eastern Kislev) when a giant squid attacked the ship. No one had ever seen such a creature, and
it tossed the ship about like a rag doll. Oarsmen and deckhands were thrown overboard, while the
marines on board fought valiantly to fend the creature off. But it was just too large, and within an hour it
had ripped the huge boat to shreds. Floating in the icy waters, Brutus was sure he would drown.

But Brutus was strong, and somehow he managed to cling to pieces of the wrecked ship despite the 12
foot surf – staying afloat long enough to be rescued by a Kislevian fisherman the following day. Brutus

was taken to the small fishing village of Arslad, where he was nursed back to health by the locals. Brutus
wanted to return to the Empire, but he was sure he never wanted to sail the high seas again. While
drinking vodka at the local tavern, he met a river trader named Alexander Konkoushikof, who had a
similar appetite for drinking and gambling. They became fast friends, and when it was time for
Alexander to leave he invited Brutus to help man his boat.

For the next 6 years Alexander, Brutus, and the rest of the boat’s crew sailed up and down the rivers of
Kislev and the Empire, trading wool, lumber, metals, and precious goods. Life was good, as Alexander
made a profitable living for all, and even more importantly he always knew the best bar in every town.

One evening, when the boat pulled up to the docks in Aldorf, there was a message waiting for the boat’s
captain. Alexander’s wife had died, and there was no one to raise his three children. Alexander decided
to return to Arslad and left Brutus to find work on his own. This proved hard, and Brutus turned to
drinking and meandering the various towns of the Empire. For the next 3 years he was only able to find
only odd jobs here and there.

He was feeling particularly down on his luck while working as a dock laborer in Pfieldorf when he
happened across an old Kislevian friend, a fellow sailor on one of Alexander’s boats. He had great news,
Alexander was back in business! In fact he told Brutus that Alexander right this moment was in Altdorf
back captaining his favorite boat, the Lady Nakita. He would probably be there for another week, and if
Brutus was quick he might be able to catch him before he left Altdorf. Brutus was overjoyed at the news,
and immediately booked passage on a riverboat headed for Nuln. Unfortunately the boat would then be
heading for Averhiem, so from there he would need to travel by stagecoach.

On the day the riverboat was set to leave, Brutus was approached by a queer old man who looked
familiar. His name was Heironymous and a few years ago he had met him in Kamperbad and they had
exchanged stories about traveling the north seas. Heironymous had a young lad with him, who was
looking to travel and see the Empire. But Heironymous seemed to think they boy was far too naive to
travel on his own. So he made an offer to Brutus: take the boy with you Altdorf, look after him and keep
him out of trouble. For this he offered 8 gold crowns! Such easy money was not to be refused, so he took
the boy with him on the journey.
