Women’s health is a topic consistently discussed by women themselves, the media, men
in general, men in government positions, and by doctors and healthcare providers, but
unfortunately, the rhetoric is all about reproductive health and breast cancer, not about what it
should be. According to the Harvard Medical School (2017), heart disease is the leading cause of
death in women, however most women do not believe it is a great health risk. The Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) reported that in 2013 298,758 women died of heart disease, compared to
less than 40,000 women who died of breast cancer that same year. Regardless of this fact, “on a
day-to-day basis, women still worry more about getting breast cancer,” (Harvard, 2017).
Heart disease has a reputation of being a man’s disease and is therefore an afterthought to
women, but it affects women just as dominantly as it does men, with certain important
differences. “A woman’s symptoms are often different from a man’s, and she’s much more likely
than a man to die within a year of having a heart attack,” and therefore women need to pay closer
attention to their heart health (Harvard, 2017). The CDC reports that only 64% of women who
die suddenly of coronary heart disease show no previous symptoms, while Harvard Medical
School attributes this to physicians that “never talk about coronary risk and sometimes don’t
Research for healthcare providers who cater to women’s needs leads to a series of
offices. This is an outstanding discovery especially when taking into account that the leading
cause of death is heart disease and is no wonder why “only 54% of women recognize that heart
health is their number one killer,” (CDC, 2017). It is time to make a change and it will start here,

women’s healthcare and create a difference for women to have physicians who do discuss their
leading cause of death and what better place to start than one they already visit at least once a
year.
It is imperative that women start hearing rhetoric of taking care of their heart health and
taking it seriously because “women have been shown to have a significant time delay in
receiving diagnostic and interventional procedures,” (Dolor, et. al., 2010). A barrier of
preventive action results from “too much confusion in the media about what to do,” but “data
support the success of national education programs to raise awareness of heart disease risk
among women and highlight the need to sustain efforts to raise awareness,” which can be
The three main publics needed to focus on with a heart health campaign are 1) women
(patients), 2) doctors/physicians, and 3) caregivers to patients. The message for Austin Area
OB-GYN & Fertility should focus not solely on a yearly pap smear and mammogram, but also
Physicians need to take advantage of the fact that women are in their office and listening
so they can encourage better care. Challenges of heart health communication for women are that
breast cancer affects body image, where heart issues do not; the threat may not seem real because
it does not present itself until later years (about age 70); and 50 year-old women know other
women with breast cancer more than those with heart disease and are therefore again, feel less
threatened by it (Harvard, 2017). Austin Area OB-GYN & Fertility should partner with
WISEWOMAN, Million Hearts, and ASTHO, as these organizations have the campaign efforts
underway and will serve as well-established partners for us to add legitimacy to our efforts.

Timothy Piazza, died on February 3, 2017. He was the victim of a hazing ritual at Beta
Theta Pi at Penn State University that cost him his life. After being forced to drink copious
amounts of hard liquor during an hour-long obstacle course, Timothy stopped and tried to leave
the party, but instead opened the door to the basement and fell down the steep flight of stairs.
Rather than being helped up and taken to the medical center, Timothy remained at the hands of
his so-called brothers. The following precious hours were not used to help cure his injuries by a
doctor, they were spent being hit, sat on, made fun of, and to an extent, tortured by his new
friends.
Now, we can all understand that mistakes happen, parties get out of control, but there is
no situation in which this should ever have happened or happen again. That is why Purdue works
hard to ensure hazing prevention events happen and all students are aware of our zero tolerance
policy. Here to tell us more about Timothy and what could have been done to save his life are

Did you know that before the measles vaccination existed, 3 to 4 million people were
infected resulting in 48,000 of them being hospitalized and tragically, 400-500 died every year in
the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)? Since then, however, the
widespread measles vaccination led to a greater than 99% reduction in measles.
Currently, Washington and Oregon are experiencing a measles outbreak which could take
hold of Texas children. Washington governor, Jay Inslee, declared a state of emergency after 35
confirmed cases, 11 suspected cases, and 2 more from Hawaii of people that had traveled to
Washington. Yvonne Maldonado, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at the
Stanford University School of Medicine, says, “There’s no reason why non-medical exemptions
should exist.”
Austin ranks among the top 15 metropolitan areas in the nation for vaccine exemptions
and 6 cases were confirmed in Ellis County in 2018 that led to a Measles Health Advisory from
the Texas Department of Health Services. Anti-vaccination organizations like Texans for
Vaccine Choice have successfully lobbied to kill any bill that would make it more difficult to
obtain a waiver. In 2018, 57,000 students claimed a non-medical exemption because parents do
not want to vaccinate their children.
Please let me know if you would like more background on the importance of reducing
risk of measles in Texas and the amount of waivers being issued to anti-vaccination parents. I am
looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this important health issue.
Sincerely,
Laurice Yanar
